Korea by scooter Crossing Mungyeong Pass

The new scooter stands in front of a cliff in Mungyeong. / Image by Jon DunbarBy Jon DunbarIt was time for a new scooter, and I found the perfect one at a great price. Only problem was, it was down in Daegu and I'm in Seoul. But rather than seeing that as a setback, I took it as a challenge. I skipped work for a day and caught a KTX south to meet the seller. As soon as my train glided into the station in Daegu, my real journey began: the journey home. I met with the dealer and my new steed, a bright yellow 125CC Daelim Besbi scooter. Besbi is a knockoff brand of exotic foreign scooters like Vespa, but it runs reliably well and carries a lot of kick. I rode it around the block, taking a moment to adjust to the new steering handles; there was a beast hiding within its fancy chassis. Turns out, the seller had bought it for his wife, but it proved too powerful for her liking. After lunch, I set out on the road at around 1:45 p.m. The road outside Daegu / Image by Jon DunbarAvoiding expressways, my journey was notably slower than the same by car. I stuck to roads with 80kph speed limits,

JW Marriott brings luxury into Dongdaemun

By Kang Seung-wooWhen you think of Dongdaemun in Seoul, apart from its historical significance, the first impression characterizing the place may be the hustle and bustle of a textile and apparel wholesale market -- a perception that is distanced from luxury. Still, it remains one of the nation's best shopping districts selling cheaper clothes and other products to visitors as well as locals.Matthew Cooper, general manager of the JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square SeoulHowever, Matthew Cooper, the general manager of the JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square Seoul, believes the concept of Dongdaemun is transforming into luxury as the Australian is seeking to deliver a truly luxury brand there through his property.“That (the image of Dongdaemun as not luxury) is probably the biggest thing for the hotel to overcome,” Cooper said in an interview with The Korea Times.“But I relate it to the meatpacking district of New York City. Twenty years ago, that area was where people killed animals to make meat and it did stink. Now, it is the chicest and hottest place by real estate in New Yor

An exploration into Naju - South Jeolla Province's hidden gem

Naju Image Theme Park in South Jeolla Province / Courtesy of Robert NeffBy Robert Neff This past Saturday, 38 members (foreign and Korean) of the Korea Heritage Society traveled into the past when they visited the city of Naju ― which is often called “Little Seoul.” Located in South Jeolla Province, this city is steeped with antiquity and culture and is one of those hidden gems foreign visitors rarely encounter.Naju City Tours guide Kim Jung-sook energetically told tales and anecdotes from the past in Korean, which was entertainingly translated into English by Korea Heritage Society President Choi Ha-kyung, who grew up in the area and added his own personal insights. One of the first places visited was Bulhoe Temple which is claimed by some to be the first Buddhist temple built in Korea. The temple is surrounded by a lush forest of immense trees and it is hard to believe most of the original temple was destroyed in by a forest fire in 1790.
