Full-scale annual lantern parade set to take place in central Seoul

Yonhap A full-scale lantern parade is set to take place in central Seoul, Saturday, ahead of Buddha's birthday next week for the first time in four years, according to the organizers.The annual parade will begin at Dongdaemun at 7 p.m., and end after arriving at Jogye Temple, the headquarters of South Korea's largest Buddhist sect, the Jogye Order. The annual lantern parade, in which tens of thousands of Buddhists carry colorful lanterns of various shapes, provides a spectacle for the crowd coming to enjoy the centuries-old festival.Also known as "Yeondeunghoe" in Korean, the festival has been held annually in celebration of Buddha's birthday on the eighth day of the fourth month of the lunar calendar. The festival took place from April 30 to May 7 across the capital.According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Monday, some 180,000 foreign tourists visited the city during the eight-day run and the figures represented 76 percent of the total number of foreign visitors to Korea during the period.The government said the number of foreign visitors to the city during that period was 55 percent of the number of tourists who came in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country. Founded by Rev. Cho Yong-gi in 1958 in a tent, it has grown remarkably over a short period of time, and nowadays draws the largest number of believers in Korea for worship.The church has a unique position in that it let Pentecostalism, a Christian movement that emphasizes the direct personal experience of God through baptism with the Holy Spirit, take center stage in the Korean Protestant world, where the Presbyterian denomination prevails. The highlight of those events will be a prayer meeting to be held on May 17 to 21 in the church. Robert Alexander Hardie was a Canadian physician and Methodist evangelist who served as a missionary in Korea for 45 years. He is recognized as the catalyst for the Wonsan Revival in 1903 which later inspired the Great Pyongyang Revival of 1907 in North Korea.
