Singer Yoo Goes to Hollywood

By Karen Song Singer Steve Seungjun Yoo, 32, once derided and deported from Korea due to his evasion of military service is making his way back here through the help of world celebrity Jackie Chan, Yonhap news reported, Monday. According to Chan's entertainment company, JC group international, Yoo signed a 7 year exclusive contract with the group in May, with the aim of grooming him as an action star in Asia and the rest of the world. Representative of JC group Korea Lee Mi-seon said, ``Jackie Chan highly graded Yoo's potential to become the next famous action star after himself as he is a talented dancer and a singer, speaks fluent English and some Chinese.'' Lee said that Stanley Tong, the director of ``Police Story,'' ``Rumble In The Bronx,'' and ``The Myth,'' was currently considering casting Yoo in his new film. Yu-na Chooses New Music

By Kang Seung-woo Staff Reporter Star figure skater Kim Yu-na has chosen ``Scheherazade'' and ``Danse Macabre'' for this upcoming season. IB Sports said Friday that 17-year-old Kim, who now trains in Canada, has finished selecting the music for her routines. Scheherazade, which is for free skating, is a symphonic suite composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1888, and was arranged for a four minute, 10 second work. American figure skater Michelle Kwan used it at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002 and Japan's Miki Ando also performed to the music at the World Championships in 2006 and 2008. Danse Macabre, performed by the piano and violin, is fast-tempoed and dynamic, enabling Kim to display her powerful performances in the short program. ``I was very attracted to Scheherazade four years ago, when a skater used it, so I have decided to use it,'' said Kim. Constitutional Court President Visits Mongolia

By Park Si-soo Staff Reporter Constitutional Court president Lee Kang-kook, 63, paid a courtesy call on Mongolian President Nambar Enkhbayar at the Mongolian presidential office, Wednesday. They shared ideas on a variety of issues designed to tighten relations between the two countries. During the meeting, Lee said ``I hope the meeting will be a steppingstone to solidify the relations between constitutional counts of the two states and to increase exchanges.'' The Mongolian president responded that he expected the Korean government to support Mongolian people in Korea in various ways. Air Force Chief Wins Top Management Award

By Michael Ha Staff Reporter The nation's Air Force chief is being honored for his top-flight management skills. Kim Eun-gi, chief of staff for the Air Force, was named the ``Best Executive in Asia'' by the U.S.-based International Business Awards. The award ceremony is scheduled to take place in Dublin, Ireland, in September, the Air Force announced Wednesday. These awards are designed to celebrate and honor exemplary management skills and top executive managers from around the world, according to the award's Web site. They are sometimes dubbed the ``Oscars for executive managers.'' Kim is credited with helping to boost efficiency at the Air Force during the past year, implementing various management initiatives that emphasized smaller, streamlined operations and command structure. The Air Force announced: ``This is recognition that we are taking the right steps. Our military will be smaller but smarter. Korean Singer Gets Doctorate in Biotec in Switzerland

By Karen Song Contributing Writer Korean singer Lucid Fall (33) has obtained a doctor's degree in biotechnology in Switzerland, Yonhap news reported. As a graduate of Seoul National University department of Chemical Engineering, Lucid Fall obtained his doctoral degree at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne by submitting a paper titled 'Polymeric Carriers for Therapeutic Agents: Drug and Gene Delivery Systems by RAFT Polymerization.' According to his agency Antenna Music, Lucid Fall attracted the judge's attention for wearing the Korean traditional costume "hanbok" when presenting his paper. He was put into a greater spotlight after he was revealed as a singer in Korea. Super Junior to Perform at MTV Asia Award

By Karen Song Contributing writer Korean pop star Super Junior will be performing at Asia's biggest music festival, the 'MTV Asia Award(MAA)'held in Genting, Malaysia on Oct.2, Yonhap news reported. MTV Korea said Monday that MAA 2008 will feature Super Junior of Korea, Leona Louis a singer songwriter from England, and One Republic from the United States. This year's MAA will also present American bands "Panic! At the Disco," "Click Five," and the winner of "America's Best Dance Crew" "JabbaWockeez" MTV Korea said. "Super Junior" is the only Asian artist to perform. Nominees are "Super Junior"("Favorite of Korea"), Leona Louis and "One Republic"("Break Through Artist of the Year,") and "Panic! TV Announcer, Comedian Tie Knot

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter Top Korean comedian Yu Jae-suk tied the knot on Sunday with MBC announcer Na Kyung-eun at the Shilla Hotel. The 35-year-old is currently one of the most popular comedians in Korea, hosting four programs including MBC's ``Infinity Challenge'' and KBS's ``Happy Together.'' Na, 27, became an MBC announcer in 2004 and is currently hosting a radio program called ``Chocolate.'' The couple first met during ``Infinity Challenge'' in 2006, when Na appeared only by voice, asking questions to the hosts of the program. Tiger JK, T Wed With Baby

By Lee Hyo-won Staff Reporter Hip hop stars ``T'' (Yoon Mi-rae), 27, and Tiger JK (Seo Jeong-gwon), 34, are married with a four-month-old baby boy, it was belatedly reported Thursday by Yonhap News. Drunken Tiger rapper Tiger JK and T, former member of group Uptown and R&B duo Tashani, were secretly wed last June, according to the two's management agency Jungle Entertainment. It was the wish of Tiger JK's late grandmother, to whom the rapper dedicated a song in his 7th album, to watch the couple tie the knot while she was alive. The two had a small ceremony attended only by family members in a Buddhist shrine in Gyeonggi Province. T fell pregnant in July, the same month Drunken Tiger's 94-year-old grandmother passed away. Korean Takes Top Post at Rotary International

By Michael Ha Staff Reporter Lee Dong-kurn, 72, who took office as the president of Rotary International on July 1, said he has picked childhood mortality as the top area of focus for his term. ``Around the world, 26,000 children die everyday, and many of these deaths can be prevented," he said in an interview with The Korea Times Thursday. He said his organization would focus on countries in Africa and Southeast Asia and assist in programs to help reduce childhood mortality in those regions. ``Our goal is to save the lives of children. We will turn the dreams of a safe and happy childhood, a childhood that turns into a long and healthy life, into a reality," Lee said. Song Hye-kyo Signs Contract With Stellar

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter Korean actress Song Hye-kyo has signed a contract with Stellar Entertainment to expand her acting and other activities on the Asian market. Stellar Entertainment is an agency founded by Michelle Yeoh, the Chinese megastar of ``Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'' (2000) and ``Memoirs Of A Geisha'' (2005), and Terence Chang, the producer of ``Mission Impossible 2'' (2002) and ``Face Off'' (1997). According to the June 30 issue of movie magazine ``Variety,'' Stellar announced that the 26-year-old Song signed a management contract on overseas activities with the agency. Stellar has its headquarters in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
