Toronto Aggressive in Fight Against Climate Change

By Kwon Mee-yoo Staff Reporter David Miller, mayor of Toronto and chair of C40 Climate leadership group, says Canada's largest city has taken an aggressive approach to environmental issues, explaining that Toronto's transportation focuses on moving people, not cars. ``We can move more people by bicycle and rapid transit,'' the mayor said in an interview with The Korea Times. ``So we are building 120 kilometers of light rail transit and thousand kilometers of bike paths.'' He is visiting Seoul to participate in the four-day C40 summit taking place here this week bringing together some of the world's largest cities to discuss climate change. The C40 was established in 2005 with the aim of accelerating cities' programs to fight climate change. Miller was named the chair in 2008. Miller said Toronto has also already energy-retrofitted 500 buildings and encourages the construction of rooftop gardens. ``You can create jobs, lower energy consumption, save money and rejuvenate the neighborhood,'' the mayor said. 21-Year-Old Named Seouls Top Beauty

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter Kim Joo-ri, a ballerina and a graduate from one of the world's top ballet schools, was selected as the 2009 Miss Seoul at the Sejong Hotel, Tuesday. The 21-year-old Kim graduated from Russia's Bolshoi Ballet School and is fluent in Russian and English. ``I hope I will qualify for the finals and heighten Korea's image at the international pageant. I wish to open an international ballet school and reveal the artistic side of Korea to the world,'' Kim said after winning the title. Two first runner-ups and three second runner-ups were also honored at the event. The first runner-ups were 25-year-old Pak Si-won, a business graduate student from Ewha Womans University, and 23-year-old Wang Chih-hui from the department of Political Science and International Studies at Yonsei University. The second runner-ups were Park Ye-ju (21, Parsons School of Design); Kim Eun-su (21, Sungkyunkwan University); and Lee Yoon-kyung (21, Chung-Ang University). Korail CEO Huh Becomes Railway Unions Asia Head

By Kim Rahn Staff Reporter Korea Railroad (Korail) CEO Huh Joon-young has been elected as the Asian regional head of the International Union of Railways. Members of the organization unanimously selected Huh, 57, at the Asian Regional Assembly held in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Friday. As a representative of 30 railway agencies in 19 nations, Huh will preside over meetings and the union's general assembly, develop joint projects and make a budget during his two-year term through 2010. He will also be the board director of the union. During the assembly, Korail also won the bid to host a bullet train workshop and the next Asian assembly in Daejeon in November. ``Huh's election is expected to strengthen the international position of Korea's railway and help Korail's promotion to construct railways overseas,'' a Korail official said. Tibaijuka Praises Green Seoul

By Kwon Mee-yoo Staff Reporter Anna Tibaijuka, the undersecretary general and executive director of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-HABITAT), said she has been impressed by Seoul's efforts to become greener. Born in Tanzania, Tibaijuka is the first African woman to become the under-secretary-general of a United Nations program. UN-HABITAT is a United Nations agency handling urban development. ``It is dealing with cities, towns, planning, housing, infrastructure, transport ― city development generally,'' Tibaijuka said. It is her fourth visit to Korea and her second time in Seoul. ``Seoul is a beautiful city with a lot of trees and greenery. It also has one advantage compared to other cities ― mountains,'' she said. ``It is very nice to have mountains in the city. It makes the city look better and people don't see continuous buildings. It's definitely an advantage environmentally.'' Jackie Chan to Volunteer in Tongyeong for 3 Days

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter Chinese action star Jackie Chan will be spending three days volunteering in Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province, the Chosun Ilbo reported Tuesday. According to his production company The Jackie Chan Group Korea, Chan will be spending time with 100 children from single-parent homes and state orphanages from Tongyeong, Haenam, Gangneung and other areas in Korea from Thursday to Saturday. SBS Broadcasting invited the 55-year-old to hold ``Jackie Chan's Hope Project,'' a one-night, two-day charity event for underprivileged children. Korean celebrities such as boy band Super Junior, actresses Jang Na-ra and Jeon Hye-bin and actor Jeong Doo-hong, will also take time out of their busy schedules to participate in the event. Seoul Olympic Legacy Impresses Mayor of London

By Kim Se-jeong Staff Reporter Aside from participating in the C40 Large Cities Climate Change Summit, Mayor of London Boris Johnson has had another mission to accomplish: to observe Seoul 20 years after staging the Summer Olympics in 1988. Touring the Seoul Olympic grounds and nearby facilities, he had this to say: ``After 20 yeas, the legacy of the Games is fantastic.'' In a news conference Monday at the Shilla Hotel where the summit is underway, Johnson said, ``All these things inspired me with hope that we can produce the same sort of legacy in London.'' Female Film Producer Jung Dies

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter Jung Seung-hye, the head of movie production company Achim and a famed copywriter, died Sunday from colon cancer. She was 44. Jung has been suffering from the illness since 2006 and was hospitalized last month after her condition worsened. ``She struggled against the disease, but as the cancer spread to her lungs, her condition got worse,'' said Lee Joon-ik, director of the hit movie ``King and the Clown'' (2005) and Jung's friend of 20 years. Jung started working in the movie marketing business in 1989 at film company Shin Cine with the film ``Happiness Does Not Come From Grades.'' She moved to Lee's Cine World and produced numerous films including ``The Spy'' (1999), ``Anarchists'' (2000) and ``Hwang San Bul'' (2003). Chef Rachel Yang Blends Korean Flavors in French Dishes

Rice cakes, a staple in many Asian countries, is relatively unfamiliar elsewhere. Yang, who owns acclaimed restaurant Joule in Seattle, recently showed how rice cakes can be worked into ``foreign'' dishes with delicious results. She presented dishes like rice cakes in oxtail ragu at last weekend's Seoul International Rice Cake Fair, where she was the special guest invited by the Institute of Traditional Korean Food. ``Westerners don't have rice cakes, and for them, there's nothing like the texture of the rice cakes. SFBT Promoting Righteous Living With Spiritual Movement

Singer Pays Back After Unsatisfactory Concert

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter Ballad singer Lee So-ra plans to repay her fans who came to watch her sing, literally. Lee, 39, said she would refund all those who purchased tickets for her concert on Friday at Sogang University, because she was not up to her usual standards. After singing some 20 songs, Lee told the audience that she was not happy with her performance. ``I don't like my songs today. It's a shame to sing like this to those who came here. I don't think I should be receiving admission fees,'' she said at the end of the concert. Although some fans disagreed and insisted there was no need for a refund, Lee stepped down from the stage saying that she would pay back her fans. ``Lee was not in her best condition that day. She finished the show, but we think she felt sorry for the audience. A full house would be 400 seats, and as the tickets are 50,000 won per person, the refund would be approximately 20 million won.
