Rhie Won-bokBy Jhoo Dong-chan Cartoonist Rhie Won-bok, 68, the author of “Distant Countries, Nearby Countries,” has been named president of Duksung Women’s University, the school said Thursday.Rhie will serve a four-year term from March 1.Born in Daejeon, Rhie majored in architecture at Seoul National University, after which he studied graphic design at Munster University in Germany for his master’s degree.Rhie then became a professor of graphic design at Duksung Women’s University in 1984 and was promoted to a chair professor in 2012.He received the Noonsol Award in 1993 for his contribution to the development of the South Korean cartoon industry.He was also appointed a goodwill ambassador of the National Human Rights Commission.Rhie found fame after publication of his history cartoon, “Distant Countries, Nearby Countries” which created a huge sensation among young students in 1990s. Mentally disabled student to play with NBA stars

Ahn Jung-hoonBy Park Si-sooA Korean student with a mental disability will play with NBA stars in a special basketball match in New York on Saturday, one day before the NBA All-Star Game.  Ahn Jung-hoon, 19, is among 12 students invited to the event. He is the only Asian that will take part, the game organizer said.The 193-centimeter student will play as a member of East Team, whose members include retired NBA star Detlef Schrempf and disabled students from Belgium, Greece, Nigeria and Mexico.  Ahn is talented in several sports. He won a bronze medal in a floor hockey tournament in Idaho in the U.S. in 2009.Ahn, an orphan, lives and studies at the Daniel School, a private Christian school in Seoul.“He is very good at sports, especially basketball,” Jung Jae-myung, a Daniel School teacher, said. “He was really pleased when he was invited to the NBA event.”

Singer's estranged wife to make claim to royalties

Na Hoon-aBy Ko Dong-hwan                                          The wife of one of the nation’s veteran singers Na Hoon-a, 68, plans to make a claim on his royalties in her divorce suit against him, said a law firm representing her Wednesday.The law firm, Win, said that Na’s wife, identified as Jung, 54, is entitled to part of his revenue gained from royalties, estimated at between 400 million won ($360,000) and 500 million won ($450,000) annually.It added that they will soon ask the court to include Na’s royalty income to the list of his assets to be divided in divorce proceedings filed by Jung in October 2014.“We found through various sources that Na is raking in 400 million won to 500 million won in royalty revenue,” Win said. “We contacted the Korea Music Copyright Association to find the exact royalty figures. Former chief of banks' federation to head business lobby

Park Byung-wonA former Korea Federation of Banks chairman will take over as head of the Korea Employers Federation (KEF), the business lobby group said Thursday. The KEF said Park Byung-won will take the helm of the organization on Feb. 26 after being endorsed by member companies at its general meeting. “We expect Park will take initiative in solving big labor issues, such as cutting working hours and extending the retirement age, as well as labor market restructuring,” the KEF said in a statement. The KEF has been holding discussions with union leaders on the issues, but has had difficulty in reaching compromises. Park, 63, spent most of his career in the government sector, serving as a vice finance minister and a senior economic advisor to former President Lee Myung-bak before joining the banks’ federation. The Busan native studied law at Seoul National University.

Late soldier's father donates money to unit

By Lee Min-hyung The father of a soldier who died during a military drill last month has donated money to a marine unit in which his son served.The father, surnamed Lee, donated 10 million won ($9,100), half of the condolence money raised during his son’s funeral, to the Marine unit in Yeonpyeong Island, SBS news reported on Monday.The report said Lee visited the unit with the money days after his son’s funeral, and met the unit’s commanding officer.The officer offered to set up a tombstone for the soldier with the money, but Lee reportedly asked the officer to use the money for his son’s fellow soldiers.Lee donated the rest of the condolence money to the high school and university where his son studied.Late last month, the Ministry of National Defense said the Marine private first-class died due to chest compression while operating K9 self-propelled artillery.A helicopter rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he died hours later.The military is still trying to find the exact cause of death, but nothing has been confirmed.Lee said he wanted no one to be pu

Yoo Gyun-hyeBy Kim Hyo-jin The defence ministry has appointed its first female director general.Yoo Gyun-hye, 43, was named director general at the Ministry of National Defense on Tuesday.“I have worked hard to raise public understanding of the Korean Army,” Yoo said. “I guess the ministry might have considered this when they elevated me to the post.”Yoo began her career at the ministry in 1996 after passing the 39th civil service examination. In 2012, she was appointed vice director, which was also the first time the military had appointed a woman to this position.“Yoo has been appreciated as a capable leader with an innovative style of performance,” a defense ministry official said.
