KAIST professor to lecture at renowned tech forums

Lee Keon-jaeBy Lee Min-hyungLee Keon-jae, a professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), is going to America to speak at two internationally renowned forums, in recognition for his developing flexible NAND flash memory chips.Lee, 40, will visit the United States next month to attend the International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM) in December to explain his technique for producing flexible NAND chips. He is also invited to the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) scheduled to take place in February next year. The two forums are the world’s most pre-eminent seminars on electronic devices and semiconductor technology, KAIST said Thursday. It is rare for a Korean professor to be invited to lecture there.The professor studied materials science and engineering at Yonsei University before obtaining a doctorate in materials engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006. Gov't to streamline public sector to improve efficiency, competitiveness

South Korea will aggressively streamline the public sector to improve efficiency and build up competitiveness, the country's top economic czar said Wednesday.In a meeting with the heads of the country's state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and public agencies, Finance Minister Choi Kyung-hwan said the central government plans to scrutinize the energy, environment and education sectors starting next month.He said screening and evaluating how public organizations operate in these three sectors will allow policymakers to reduce redundancy and permit SOEs and agencies to concentrate on core areas that can enhance efficiency.The official, who doubles as deputy prime minister in charge of economic affairs, added that policymakers will also check if operations carried out by public corporations and agencies overlap those of the private sector."In the case of overlap, measures will be taken to resolve such problems," Choi said.The minister then said under the incumbent administration, debt held by public sector corporations has been slashed by some 500 billion won ($437.1 million), while tackling

Daesang awards Hallym food science professor

Professor Yoon Jung-hanBy Lee Hyo-sikProfessor Yoon Jung-han has been selected as the first Daesang Hallym Food Science Award recipient according to an announcement Monday from Daesang, Korea’s leading food company.Yoon, a professor at the Chuncheon-based Hallym University’s Department of Food Science and Nutrition, received a 20 million won prize for her research on the correlation between obesity and cancer.She has been conducting extensive studies to discover foods that help prevent obesity, various inflammations and cancers in humans.Yoon, who received a bachelor’s degree in Food Science from Ewha Womans University in 1972, has served numerous academic and administrative posts throughout her 30-year career. Among other posts, she chaired the Korea Nutrition Society in 2013.The professor earned a master’s degree and a doctorate from the University of Minnesota in the United States in 1980 and 1982.
