Comments From Former Judge

By Lee Hyo-won Staff Reporter The race to become ``the world’s most desirable man’’ is now coming to end, and the Mr World 2010 hopefuls must take one last great leap in the grand finale, Saturday evening at Songdo ConvensiA, Incheon. So what does it exactly mean to be ``desirable”? The young contestants have pushed the limits of their physical and mental capacities in sporting challenges such as trekking a snowy mountain, training with local marines and learning taekwondo. But the competition is not looking for an athlete; sportsmanship is valued but it is only one part of the prerequisites. The men were challenged in a Korean food cooking competition and showed off their sense of style in a charity fashion show. Mike Dixon, the music director of the Mr World contest who served as a judge in the previous event in 2007, upheld the view that the competition is looking for a James Bond type. ``The James Bond type of man is charming, athletic, intelligent and talented. They also have to be good-looking ― the contestants are constantly being evaluated. Their overall dem

Whats Necessary for Satisfying Single Life?

This is the fourth in a series of columns by James Lee, CEO of matchmaking firm Sunoo (www.couple.net), about various aspects of marriage on the basis of their 20 years in business. ― ED. A few years ago a 58-year-old woman visited me. I thought she was a mother who had concerns about her child but I was surprised to learn that she wanted to meet me to discuss herself. I listened to her story and learned she was a bachelorette. She had chosen to remain single and had never regretted her choice of lifestyle. However, at a certain point, she suddenly lost her desire to live alone and felt like something was missing from her life. She told me that when she was younger she had an active social life. However, as she got older and lost confidence about her appearance, she started losing her friends and began to feel quite lonely. Finally, she decided that she did not want to be alone anymore. She went on a few blind dates but without positive results. Even though she wanted to get married she was so accustomed to living alone that she had a hard time adjusting t

(83) Patriot Ahn Jung-geun’s Life Seen by Saju

By Janet Shin It is the 100th anniversary of Ahn Jung-geun's death on March 26, 2010. He was executed on March 26, 1910, after he assassinated Hirobumi Ito, the first Japanese governor-general of Korea on Oct. 26, 1909. Accordingly, there are some Japanese documents showing the order for Ahn's execution. The documents reveal the fact that Ahn and eight Koreans were arrested in Harbin, China and put in solitary confinement and secretly spied on while in Lushon Prison in China. On the other hand, there are controversies about whether to call Ahn a ``general'' or an ``independence fighter'' as he has been called so far, on top of recent government's effort to honor patriots who sacrificed everything to restore the country's sovereignty. It is intended to recognize Ahn's contribution to Korean independence and the fact that what he did was based on ``military spirit'' as Ahn described himself as a ``chief of staff'' and the ``spirit of the military'' in some of his writings. However many disagree because Ahn was not working for the official army but more like an army raised f

Songgwang Temple Spreads Monastic Jewel

By David A. Mason Contributing Writer Just two weeks ago the front page of this newspaper was topped by photos of the death and funeral of Master Beop Jeong (1932-2010). The passing of this highly-respected yet humble monk, famous for his collections of essays such as ``Freedom from Possessions," touched the heart of this nation. Many may have wondered why his corpse was taken from Gilsang Temple in Seoul down to a remote southern monastery for his cremation. The answer is a long story. Back in 1982, I was intrigued to hear about a grand temple located at a remote mountain far from Seoul that contained what was at that time Korea's only international meditation center with non-Korean monks in residence. When I finally went there, I spoke with a French bhikuni nun living a Korean monastic lifestyle, and she was able to explain to me the reason that spiritual-minded foreigners were flocking to such a faraway site to learn and practice ``seon" (Korean Zen Buddhism). The incentive was that there was one of the 20th century's greatest enlightened seon masters, then the

Contestants Reveal Beauty Secrets

Contributing writer JR Breen contributed to this article -ED By Lee Hyo-won Staff Reporter Seventy-four men are vying to become ``the world’s most desirable man.’’ As Julia Morley, chairwoman of the Miss World Organization, said, the image Mr World strives for has shifted from the bulky Popeye to the more suave James Bond. And in order to pull off a sleek look, flawless skin, toned limbs and a great smile are a must, and contestants shared some of their know-how on looking handsome. Staying Toned A good balance of weightlifting and cardiovascular workouts at the gym seemed to be the norm for contestants, combined with a variety of other workouts, ranging from dancing to yoga and boxing. Alvin de Joya of the Philippines said he ``used to be fat,’’ and went from weighing 105 kilograms to 79 by exercising regularly at the gym. Now he stays fit by playing basketball. Spain’s Guillermo Garcia Becerril, a semi-professional footballer, also enjoys group sports. Kendrick Kemp, representing the Bahamas, gained the nickname ``lightning legs’’ after showing his speed in a

Competitors Get First-Hand Look at Koreas Divide

By Lee Hyo-won Staff Reporter The Mr World 2010 contest is nearing its end, with the finale scheduled for Saturday in Incheon. So far contestants have warmed up to Korean culture, visiting museums and temples and tasting local dishes, and they visited Wednesday one of the most fortified places on Earth ― the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas. The Korean War (1950-53) came to halt with an armistice agreement and the peninsula was divided in half by a four-kilometer-wide de facto border. It is a living remnant of the Cold War and one of the most popular tourist destinations in South Korea. Only 20 out of the 74 Mr World representatives were allowed to visit ``the truce village’’ of Panmunjeom near Paju, Gyeonggi Province. The armistice was signed there, and the liaison offices for both Koreas are located there. The rest of the men visited Dorasan Pyeonghwa-Park (Mt. Dora Peace Park) and Dora Observatory. The observatory allowed them to peer into civilian life in North Korea. The farmlands and Propaganda Village as well as the streets of Gaeseong and Kim I

IVI Hopes to Raise Awareness With Mr World

By J.R. Breen Contributing Writer Beautiful models, high-end fashion and top class performance ― all in the name of charity. On Tuesday evening a charity fashion show, organized by Andre Kim with the 74 contestants of the Mr World 2010 competition as runway models, took place at the Hyatt Regency, Incheon. Proceeds of the event were donated to the International Vaccine Institute (IVI), a United Nations research center based in Seoul. ``We think (the) Mr World competition will really help us raise public awareness,'' Michael Goon, IVI's deputy director general for administration of finance told The Korea Times in a telephone interview, Tuesday. ``Our mission is to combat infectious diseases through innovative vaccine design and introduction,'' the 66-year-old said. Founded in 1993, IVI decided their headquarters would be in an Asian country. With many countries making bids, South Korea eventually won for its advanced biotechnology, proximity to countries IVI would work in. Moreover, Goon explained that Korea expressed a desire to payback the world for all the help rec

Alesha Dixon to Present Mr World

By J.R. Breen Contributing Writer British pop sensation Alesha Dixon will be the presenter at the finale of Mr World 2010 this Saturday at the Songdo ConvensiA, Incheon. She will also perform some of her hit songs, including "The Boy Does Nothing," and will be accompanied by the Mr World contestants who will be dancers. "I am really excited to be visiting Korea as I have never visited the country before so it will be a totally new experience for me," Dixon said in an e-mail. "I won't have a lot of time to see Korea but am looking forward to maybe visiting some temples and of course my favorite past time shopping." The Mr World competition, which began on March 12, has 74 contestants competing in a series of challenges, vying to become "the world's most desirable man." It culminates this Saturday in a televised finale. Mr World 2010 Holds Charity Fashion Show Tonight

By Lee Hyo-won Staff Reporter After a weekend of tasting Korean culture ― quite literally, through a cooking competition, among other events ― the Mr World 2010 contestants spent Monday preparing for a big fashion show scheduled for tonight in Incheon. The charity fashion event marks the fourth and final round of the preliminaries before the televised finale on Saturday. The 74 national representatives will walk the runway donning designs by Andre Kim to help raise donations for the International Vaccine Institute. The United Nations research center based in Seoul is sponsoring the show to help North Korean children. The rehearsals for the fashion show took place Monday afternoon, with the young men showing off special creations by Korea's iconic designer. The stage will feature five different stages with different themes. The first will be in the hopeful spirit of the 2018 Winter Olympics, for which Korea's city of PyeongChang is a bidder. The second stage will be dedicated to the upcoming FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The atmosphere will then turn formal, with
