Don't hide health records for visa

Dear Dr.P, Hello, I am in the process of applying for a visa to work in Korea. I have a question about the required Health Statement. One of the questions asks if I have ever received treatment for an emotional or nervous disorder. I see a psychiatrist and am currently prescribed Lexapro. I’m scared that if I write this down in my statement, my visa application will be rejected. Should I be truthful, or should I omit this information? I do have anxiety, but I function well in everyday life. Also, do you know of a psychiatrist that would be able to prescribe this medication in Changwon? DEAR ANONYMOUS, I can understand what you must be going through in terms of visa application worries. I don’t think it is necessary for you to disclose all of your personal details in depth. Recently the Korean people are well informed that depression is a common cold of mind that can be cured by the professional therapy. Nevertheless, there is still some prejudice against people who are in psychiatric treatment in Korea. Going into this level of detail should not be a legal issue

Why are doctors up in arms?

Controversial medical payment reform holds patients hostage By Noh Hyun-gi The Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korean Medical Association (KMA) are locked in a dispute over the implementation of a drug-related group (DRG) system, a new payment mechanism for all small- and medium-sized hospitals, starting next month. The change means regardless of the specific type and amount of treatments a patient receives for seven types of operations, the hospitals will be paid a fixed fee decided at an initial diagnosis. The United States and 12 European countries have adopted the system to cut healthcare costs and promote logistic efficiency. Rejecting it, the doctors?association vowed to take a collective action such as not performing cataract surgery. The physicians endorse the current pay-for-service (PFS) system in which Korea's state-run health insurance reimburses each service a doctor provides. In a debate on TV on June 2, Kim Sun-min from the National Health Insurance showed a graph that indicates an increase on healthcare expenditure leads to lower healt

Myeong-dong thriving on fake goods, touting

By Bahk Eun-ji, Jung Min-ho, Kim Bo-eun Myeong-dong is enjoying a renaissance ― the streets flanked by fancy shops are crowded with tourists and shoppers. It feels literally alive. The popular shopping district in central Seoul is thriving on increasing numbers of tourists from China, Japan and other countries, emerging as one of the top tour sites. No other shopping district in Korea is so lively and so popular with tourists, where all kinds of shops from luxury brands to street vendors beckon shoppers. The country’s landmark shopping district, however, has its dark side ― copycats and illegal touting to solicit customers. These illegalities, seemingly acquiesced to by the district authorities, could make tourists uncomfortable. Of course, they are elements making the streets livelier ― that may be one reason why the authorities don’t harshly crack down on them. When people walk through Myeong-dong to go shopping or meet friends, it usually involves dodging a lot of street vendors standing with the carts full of fake brand bags, accessories or various fried food.

Early treatment may control bullying damage

Doctors say victims, bullies suffer emotional scars, referral system necessary By Noh Hyun-gi Classroom bullying has become a big social issue with a string of shocking revelations about the brutality of violence that causes student victims to quit school and, in extreme cases, commit suicide. The real problem with this intractable student violence is that there are no surefire solutions, despite greater attention being given to it. Thus some experts say that one way of tackling this thorny issue should start with a better understanding of the psychology of victims and bullies. Surprisingly, a close examination shows that the mental states of the perpetrators and the victims exhibit similarities with both parties likely to suffer from lasting emotional scars without prompt treatment. However, the lack of a proper referral system from schools and stigma against psychiatric help often delay a chance to intervene and provide proper treatment. “Given the impact social interactions have on teenagers, the experience of bullying qualifies as a traumatic event,” Lee Ho-

Health issues reveal 'Sasang' constitution

By Lee Sung-hun In "Sasang" Constitutional Medicine, a person’s constitution labeled as either “so-yang-in” (SY type), “so-eum-in” (SE type), “tae-yang-in” (TY type), or “’tae-eum-in” (TE type), determines the criteria for how healthy that person is. As each constitution represents varying degrees of functionality of bodily organs, a person can be considered healthy only when the respective organs that are prone to weakening maintain their normal functions. When we have correctly identified our own constitution and its corresponding health indicators, we can lead a much healthier life with just a little bit of added effort. SE types are common among females. In comparison to the shoulders, the pelvis area is better developed. In the body measuring method that uses the five horizontal lines across a person’s body, an SE type has a longer ilium line than stomach line. Waistlines are generally slim to shape an hourglass figure, as found in many of the contestants in a beauty pageant. While some SE types possess a balanced figure to compete in such pageants, others may have s

Alcoholics Anonymous helps English speakers

By Kelly Frances William recently celebrated his third year of sobriety, a feat he largely credits to international fellowship “Alcoholics Anonymous,” popularly known as “AA,” There is only one membership requirement: a desire to stop drinking. Today, the veteran actor reflects upon his journey, the losses and gains that accompany sobriety, and the hardships that led him to the 12-step program at AA. When asked what life without the bottle offers, he expresses cautious optimism. “I was losing work regularly for showing up in poor condition, losing all of my money to my drinking, and having black-outs. Everything was deteriorating. Today, I have lost the temptation to drink, and am learning to cope with my life. I had to get a life, you see.” Like many addicts, William knew he had a problem early on. “I saw warning signs from the start,” he said. “I observed that there was absolutely no point whatsoever in sipping or savoring alcohol. I drank almost invariably to get drunk. Even after I had diagnosed myself as an alcoholic, I completely disregarded that fact. I had t

Buddhists regret China's boycott of world conference

Korea's leading Buddhist sect on Thursday expressed regret at a Chinese Buddhist delegation's abrupt withdrawal from an international Buddhist conference held in southern South Korea earlier this week to protest the presence of Tibetan delegates. On Wednesday, the Chinese Buddhist delegates to the World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB) Korea Conference suddenly withdrew from the four-day event that kicked off this week in Yeosu, 455 kilometers south of Seoul and the venue of an ongoing world expo, according to officials of South Korea's Jogye Order. The Chinese delegates also boycotted the conference's opening ceremony on Tuesday after unsuccessfully demanding that Buddhist representatives from the Tibetan government-in-exile leave the conference, the officials said. In a statement, the Jogye Order expressed concern that the Chinese delegation's refusal to accept the Tibetan Buddhists "goes against the universal values of solidarity and the promotion of peace," adding that the Tibetan affiliates are officially registered with the WFB. The Buddhist order, which organized the

How to live healthily and happily

Be aware of your external environment By Janet Shin If you look around your neighborhood, you will find various structures besieging your house. There are lots of roads and buildings of different sizes and shapes. Even if your house is in an isolated area, you will still be surrounded by diverse natural objects. This external environment produces multifarious energies influencing your life. Although you try to live in a better and healthier place, it is impossible to be completely away from harmful structures, both man-made and natural. Nevertheless, it is better to be aware of them than to be ignorant. It is a matter of how you develop your powers of awareness. It would be ideal if you could repel the harmful elements perfectly. If not, you should learn how to live wisely with them. Buildings are more harmful than other objects. The larger and sharper the buildings are, the more misfortune you will suffer. Tall and hostile buildings facing your front door hurt most. Those who live in this circumstance are more likely to experience distress and tragic consequences

Timely treatment can break depression cycle

Dear Dr. P I have been struggling with depression on and off (mostly on) for the past eight years. I have spent about three of those years on Wellbutrin XL with much success. However, I have always chosen to stay off of it after a while and am generally okay for six to nine months, before my depression comes back. I have been off Wellbutrin XL since May, 2011 but in the past couple of months my depression has returned in full force. I was wondering if you could recommend a psychiatrist, clinic, or doctor in Busan who might be able to prescribe Wellbutrin XL for me. It is the only thing that has worked in the past, and the only thing I am comfortable with using now. I live in the Haeundae area but would be willing to go to another part of the city. Dear Anonymous I am so sorry that your depression has recurred again. In my experience, many psychiatric patients undergo treatment and take medication, which works well, when their symptoms worsen, but they often stop when they improve. However, I think that they should do the reverse. If they can receive more psychiatric tr
