First day of preschool

Ann, left, and Ellen are proud to start preschool for the first time.  / Courtesy of Jane Han By Jane Han I tried to get a head start on this column by picturing in my head what Ellen and Ann’s first day of school would be like.I could easily ― and I mean, easily ― see the girls crying for dear life and hanging onto mommy, while I myself tear up at the same time.As first days go for many little ones, it would be a classic emotional scene.  Well, reality was quite the opposite. As soon as we, the whole family of five, stepped through the main entrance, there was mayhem. If a small preschool lobby looked like what it looked like today, I can’t imagine what a full-fledged elementary school would be like come time for kindergarten.Let’s just say, there were a lot of people ― a lot of kids, a lot of babies, a lot of moms, dads, grandmas and grandpas. But luckily and surprisingly, Ellen and Ann seemed wildly amused by all the people. They love people and they saw a lot of small people, who could potentially become their friends. And th

Acupuncture helps treat plantar fasciitis

By Lee Sung-hun There has been a noticeable increase in the number of patients visiting my clinic for pain in the bottom of their feet, especially in the heels. This increase could be accounted for by the fact that more and more of the general public enjoy outdoor activities either for leisurely purposes or as part of their fitness regime. Many such pains in the heel of the foot are caused by plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is the flat band of tissues that starts from the heel bone that connects to the muscles stretching out to the toes.It is generally said that when we walk and run, three to eight times, respectively, of our body weight is loaded onto the soles of our feet. When we are on the run or doing other strenuous exercises, our feet can bear a cumulative 5,000 tons of weight on them. In order to be able to sustain such loads and pressure, our feet have an arch-shape rather than a flat one.The plantar fascia helps maintaining the arch-shape of the feet, and acts as a spring that prevents the shock of hitting the hard ground surfaces from transferring to other joints i

Getting ready for first day of preschool

Ann, left, and Ellen help mom scour through online shopping sites for the perfect backpack for preschool, while youngest Lauren also wants to take a peek. / Courtesy of Jane Han By Jane Han      I have had nothing to do with back-to-school for the past 13 years, ever since I graduated from college back in 2004.This year, I have a lot to do with it.My twin girls will be going to preschool for the first time here in the U.S. and it feels like a bigger deal than it was for me going off to college.I admit I’m sounding a lot like one of those obnoxious helicopter moms, but the mere thought of my little ones ― who only speak and understand Korean ― standing with a deer-in-the-headlights look on their faces in a room full of people speaking English makes my heart ache. What if Ann has a bad stomachache like she often does? What if another kid pushes one of them and they can’t speak up for themselves? What if, what if and more what ifs.I know children in general pick up language super fast at this young age, so theoretically I know there isn’t much t
