Study links sleeping hours to Alzheimer's disease

Long-sleeping can cause a decline in cognitive function and, in the long run, Alzheimer's disease, a study suggests. / Korea Times fileBy Lee Jin-aThe longer you sleep, the greater your chance of Alzheimer’s disease, according to a study.Doctors at the National Cancer Center and Myongji Hospital said on Wednesday that long-sleeping can cause a decline in cognitive function and, in the long run, Alzheimer’s disease.According to the team, those sleeping eight to nine hours a day had a higher risk of developing cognitive disorders (38 percent) and Alzheimer’s (42 percent) than those sleeping seven to eight hours. Analyzing 10 studies published in international academic journals from 2009 to last year, the researchers found that longer sleeping hours increased the chances that cognitive function would be reduced, regardless of age, sex and region.“Sleeping for longer periods of time could increase the prevalence of inflammation-related biomarkers, thus promoting neural reactions that can result in diseases like Alzheimer’s,” said Myung Seung-

Not only this year, but each year has its symbolic zodiac animal and color. What is the rationale behind it? 2017 is written as 丁酉 in Chinese characters as per the sexagenary cycle which is a combination of 10 heavenly

Staying healthy through winter

Lee Sung-hunBy Lee Sung-hunThe cold of winter seems to have arrived in full swing. With the chilly air outside in contrast to the well-warmed indoors, it is increasingly more difficult to take care of your health as it gets colder.News reports expect that this year’s winter will likely see a high number of influenza patients. Also during winter, patients who have joint and muscle aches are likely to experience aggravated symptoms. In the oldest Oriental medical text, it is written that to maintain our health through winter, we must preserve our life energy within our body and prevent it from leaking.Plants persevere through winter by preserving themselves as winter buds and animals do so through hibernation. As such, we humans need to conserve our own life energy through the winter season so that we are well prepared to expand that energy when spring arrives with its abundant life energy. To achieve this, we need to be careful not to overspend our yang-qi, which can be exasperated with severe motions or fluctuating emotions.Going to bed early at sunset and waking up after the sunris
