Othello Through Eyes of 3 Choreographers

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter The Korea National Ballet Company is presenting Othello through three different perspectives in a single performance, each choreographed by former dancers James Jeon, Park Sang-chul and Baik Young-tae. Following various crossover performances like Universal Ballet's ballet musical ``Shim Chung'' and the Seoul Ballet Theater (SBT)'s cartoon ballet ``Coppelia,'' the KNBC needed a breath of fresh air. Thus, the troupe came up with a performance with three sections that will feature different settings, atmospheres, dancers and concepts. ``It was an experiment. KNBC has put effort in trying new styles and concepts, and this is a part of that. Many troupes have followed our footsteps in experimenting and so we needed a totally different idea,'' Park told The Korea Times during an interview. James Jeon, the resident choreographer of SBT, will start the first part, which will begin at the second chapter of Act 3 and continue to Act 5 of Othello. The audience will learn Othello's feelings toward Desdemona and also his change of heart as he become

Cartoon Ballet Coppelia to Go on Stage

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter Seoul Ballet Theater (SBT) is presenting the cartoon ballet ``Coppelia,'' one of most beloved tales about a life-size dancing doll, next month. This is the second time the ballet troupe is staging the performance. SBT introduced ``Coppelia'' last year for the first time, which proved to be a hit. Tickets were instantly sold out for all four acts. This year, the SBT has arranged a more polished version with more interesting characters and stage presentation. An old and mysterious inventor Coppelius makes a life-size dancing doll ``Coppelia.'' So beautiful and real, she is mistaken for being a real person, and the complicated relationship between the doll and villagers starts to unfold. Among admirers, the young villager Franz falls in love with Coppelia's beauty, rendering jealousy to his fiance Swanilda. James Jeon, the resident choreographer of SBT, has given the original ballet a more comical and modern twist, with colorful costumes, cartoon-like settings and special stage acts. Changdeok Palace Holds Traditional Performance

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter Changdeok Palace holds regular traditional performances in Yeongyeongdang every Thursday to offer tourists the chance to experience the royal court. The Yeongyeongdang was built in the style of a home of the Confucian literati in 1828 by King Sunjo (1800-1834). It served as an office for his son, the Crown Prince Hyomyeong, who was entrusted with running state affairs in Sunjo's stead at the age of 18. The complex was aimd at giving the young prince a taste of a rural gentry life. A variety of festive performances and banquets such as celebrations for the royal families' birthdays were held there. Unfortunately, the prince died three years later in 1830, and Sunjo had to run the country until his death in 1834. To revive the original use of the venue, various traditional performances such as court music using stringed instruments and court dances featuring the nation's masters such as Lee Saeng-gang, Cho Tong-dal, Oh Jung-sook and Jung Jae-juk are currently being staged. ``We've decided to show the performances to foreign visitor

Gisaeng Spotlighted as Fashion Leaders

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter The ``gisaeng,'' or Korean female entertainers, were fashion leaders on the threshold of modern civilization in the 20th century. Often called ``haeohwa,'' meaning ``a flower that understands words,'' the gisaeng were not only literate and educated but also fashionable. To catch a glimpse of the lifestyles of these women, the National Folk Museum of Korea is holding a special exhibition entitled ``Understanding of Gisaeng in Postcards'' from June 18 to July 10. The exhibit features 150 postcards donated by Park Min-il, professor at Kangwon National University, focusing on gisaeng from the late Joseon period to the Japanese colonial period. The postcards include one of Kim Nong-ju, a gisaeng clad in indigo-purple chima (Korean skirt) and white jeogori (Korean traditional jacket), wearing a yellow shawl, with a modern hairstyle and makeup.
