Celebrating 100th Anniversary

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter A 100th anniversary is usually associated with hilarity and festivity, but for the Korean theater arena which turns 100 this year, self-reflection rather than celebration is unfortunately the more likely sentiment with the waning industry seeing dwindling audiences, dwarfed by the booming musical industry and light-hearted shows. ``We should look back to our past first to use the centennial anniversary as a turning point for the local theater arena,'' Park Kei-bai, president of the National Theater Association of Korea (NTAK), said in an interview with The Korea Times. He said that the theater should find its identity internally and reach much closer to audiences through this year's anniversary. ``Our senior thespians fiercely made plays despite difficult situations under Japanese colonial occupation a century ago. But they never lost their passion and dreams about the power of plays. I want to revive our predecessors' spirits in present thespians who live in these materially rich but spiritually less desperate days,'' he said. Kor

ABT Returns With Don Quixote

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter The American Ballet Theater (ABT), a star-studded troupe of American ballet dancers, is coming to Seoul for the first time in 12 years. The ABT, which was founded in 1939, is one of the three most highly acclaimed ballet troupes, along with England's Royal Ballet and the Paris Opera Ballet. Unlike other companies where choreographers share similar views in terms of style, the ABT has opened its doors to numerous ballet masters and supports ``variety.'' Thus the troupe is famed to this day for the dancers' colorful characteristics in movement, style and skill. The home to so many prominent dancers including Paloma Herrera, Angel Corella, Gillian Murphy and Michele Wiles, the ABT will indeed be a memorable experience not only for ballet fans, but also ballet beginners as well. At the Seoul performance, the troupe will offer one of their finest works, ``Don Quixote'' as the main performance and ``Etudes'' and ``Rabbit and Rogue'' at the opening gala. The two gala acts will be on stage for the first time here. ``Etudes,'' choreographed by H

British Art Invades Kukje Gallery, Gana Art

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter This month, brace yourself for an invasion of British contemporary art in Seoul, with the solo exhibition of Marc Quinn at Gana Art Center and a group exhibition of well-known British artists such as Richard Hamilton, Charles Avery, David Mach and David Batchelor at Kukje Gallery. Irony & Gesture Kukje Gallery invited 11 British artists for its contemporary British art exhibition ``Irony & Gesture," which runs through Aug. 14. ``The artists invited for this exhibition are characterized not only by their strong personal vision and artistic practice, but also their strong understanding and exploration of the world around them. It is this understanding that imparts the clearer understanding of the gap that gives irony to their works that provide a truer vision of the world," curator Lee Ji-yoon said. Three artists, David Batchelor, Richard Woods and Sam Buxton, were in Seoul last week to attend the exhibit opening. The gallery floors are covered with Woods' work ``Logo no. 53 (color)" and ``Logo no. 54 (white)." ``The idea

Underworld, composed of Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, are best known for the hypnotic dance track ``Born Slippy," featured in the 1996 film ``Trainspotting." In an e-mail interview, Underworld said the massive popularity of ``Born Slippy" makes them glad to be part of something that's made many people happy. Their cool music has been included in numerous films, especially those by British director Danny Boyle such as ``Trainspotting" and ``Sunshine." ``Danny has been a friend for a long time. We've worked on five films with him so far and it's a joy to work with him. He has a great love of music and that makes our relationship particularly rewarding," the duo said. When Underworld achieved their breakthrough in the early 1990s, electronic music was still evolving. Now, its popularity has exploded around the world. ``It's a scene that's continually changing and that's why it

Musicals Slightly Down, Plays Up in Ticket Sales

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter The musical industry boom appears to be letting up, while the sagging theater industry is rising in the first half of the year. According to online ticket service Interpark, ticket sales of musicals, including non-verbal performances, staged from January to June, decreased by 0.98 percent to 41.3 billion won from 41.8 billion won in the same period last year. Meanwhile, ticket sales of plays soared by 56 percent to 7.4 billion won from the same period. Interpark said the strong growth of plays is attributed to the success of ``Yeongeuk Yeoljeon 2'' (A Series of the Best Plays) now showing in Daehangno. The number of plays increased from 460 last year to 490 this year. In terms of genre, a total of 873 musicals were put on stage, making up the largest part of total performances, but sales were slightly down from the same period. Interpark said last year, ``Quidam'' presented by Cirque du Soleil, was the best-selling performance of the year, representing the largest portion of musical ticket sales. However, during the same period
