Paik Nam June Art Center to Open in October

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter Nearly two years after the death of celebrated video art pioneer Paik Nam June, the art center dedicated to preserving his work and continuing his legacy will finally present its inaugural festival next month. The Nam June Paik Art Center (NJP Art Center), located in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, presents ``Now Jump'' from Oct. 8 to Feb. 5. The festival showcases exciting works by 103 artists and nine teams from 19 countries, not just at the new glass-covered Art Center building, but also at the Shingai High School gymnasium and Zien Art Space. ```Now Jump' is an appeal to not simply rely on past achievements: Now is always the time to act and jump. The title is an invitation but also represents the ambition of the NJP Art Center to leap into the future through the festival,'' the organizers said. The festival is not meant as a tribute to Paik, considered the first artist to integrate media and art, but a celebration of his legacy and the spirit of his work. Born in 1932 in Seoul, Paik's electronic video works and performance art

Musical Kleopatra Coming to Town

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter The Czech musical, ``Kleopatra'' starring singer-turned-actress Park Ji-yoon and veteran actress Kim Sun-kyung, is coming to town and will shed light on the legendary life of Cleopatra, the last pharaoh of Egypt, one of the most fascinating figures in history. Michal David's Korean adaptation of ``Kleopatra'' is a first in the country and the operetta has a running time of one-hour-and-40-minutes. It consists of many musical numbers, including 18 pieces for the role of the queen, raking up 70 to 80 percent of the show. Also, an ensemble featuring 20 actors will impress the audience. Kleopatra will change costumes 13 times during the performance and will wear a gorgeous crown worth three billion won. The show features flamboyant costumes and gigantic stage sets, which portray the size of an ancient Egyptian royal palace. Gallery Jant Opens with Kim Jung-ja Exhibit

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter Artist Kim Jung-ja first fell in love with the lush natural scenery of Gabon, central Africa, when she moved there in the 1970s. Even after she moved back to Korea a few years ago, Kim could not get Gabon out of her heart and mind. She continues to recreate the tropical jungles, bustling markets and seaside of Gabon through her vibrantly colored paintings. Kim's works are displayed at her solo exhibition ``My Paradise, My Africa'' at Gallery Jant in Bundang, which runs through Sept. 28. In an interview with The Korea Times, Kim could hardly contain her excitement when talking about her life in Gabon, which she called ``paradise.'' ``I really miss Gabon. I miss the scenery in Africa. I can paint the scenery in Africa forever. I'm not interested in Korean scenery. The scale of nature is small in Korea, but it is huge in Africa. My heart beats faster when I see the trees, fruits, jungles and sea in Africa,'' she said. Her paintings certainly reflect her love of the African continent. Many of her paintings feature African wom

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter The annual 2008 DUMBO Dance Festival will be held from Sept. 25 to 28 in New York under Korean artistic director and choreographer Kim Young-soon. Marking its eighth year, the festival has been the venue for up and coming choreographers to show their artistic talents and share their ideas and works with the world. ``DUMBO'' is an acronym for ``Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass,'' a neighborhood located in Brooklyn where aspiring yet poor artists gathered and shared their art. The festival is known to have contributed in transforming the mundane area into an artistic one. This year, more than 80 troupes are participating, including eight from Korea. ``The festival will feature a wide range of works, from dramatic to humorous and even innovative. It also offers Korean artists the chance to introduce Korean dance to the American public,'' Kim said through an email interview with The Korea Times. Kim started dancing when she was six years old and came to the United States after graduating from Ewha Womans University. ``I sta

Performing Arts Take to Gwacheon Streets

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter Every fall, various festivals are taking place across the nation. But among them, the Gwacheon Hanmadang Festival has an outstanding reputation for presenting unique international and Korean performances on the streets and in open-air theaters. This year, the festival will present 22 local productions and nine overseas productions at performing areas such as Jungang Park and the open stages of the civic center in Gwacheon on the southern outskirts of Seoul. The festival aims at developing street art in Korea, promoting cultural exchange between countries and relating to the audiences more interactively by presenting unique and original performances. ``We've tried to bring performing arts from closed and indoor theaters to the streets since 1997 to differentiate our festival from other regional festivals. We're proud of our annual event as an increasing number of theater and dance companies are recently doing street performances, and the quality is getting better,'' Yim Su-taek, artistic director of the festival, said. The biennale features 77 works by 70 teams from 26 countries, including Korea, Japan, China, Australia, France, United States, Netherlands and Denmark. Works range from photography and videos to computer art and digital films. ``We tried to show where new media is now.
