Universal Ballet Supports North Korean Dancer

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter For nine-year-old Kim, dancing again was a dream come true, as she had never imagined she would stand on stage again. The young girl, who wanted to be identified by only her last name, will start training to become a ballerina, thanks to a scholarship arranged by the Universal Ballet Company in Seoul. ``We wanted to celebrate the troupe's 25th anniversary with something special, and when I learned about Gustavo Dudamel and El Sistema, where he learned music, I instantly came up with the idea for ``Ballet El Sistema,'' said Julia H. Moon, the company's general director, during an interview with The Korea Times early this month. The famed Venezuelan conductor Dudamel studied under the publicly financed music education program, El Sistema, when he was young, along with other young aspiring musicians from poor socio-economic backgrounds. His success made headlines worldwide, and he later returned to El Sistema to continue work with the program. ``Ballet El Sistema'' began in April. The company first invited more than 500 underprivileged

Photo Exhibit Pays Tribute to Former President Roh

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter Local photojournalists are getting together to present works taken during the mourning of the late former President Roh Moo-hyun, who jumped to his death last May, in the special photo exhibition ``Tears.'' ``I felt I had to leave something. I was drawn to the site regardless of my political preferences. It was then that I realized that it would be now or never to be in the middle of this sort of situation, the country mourning after the tragic death of a former president,'' Shim Hyun-chul, who is participating in the exhibition, told The Korea Times. A total of 13 photographers will have more than 30 works on display, hoping to bring citizens together and offer another opportunity to mourn through the photos. ``The exhibition may be one that asks the question `what do people live for?' The angles of the photographers that focus on the aftermath of the tragic death of a former president are not violent, but produce an emotional swirl of sadness,'' culture critic Go Young-jik said. The photos depict various scenes ranging from mourners

Meet Miffy at Hangaram Design Museum

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter Miffy, the iconic little rabbit from the Netherlands, gets closer to Korean fans through the ``Miffy at the Museum'' exhibition at the Hangaram Design Museum, Seoul Art Center. Created by famed Dutch artist and illustrator Dick Bruna in 1955, Miffy has delighted generations of children throughout the decades. Miffy is originally known by her Dutch name "Nijntje," based on how a toddler pronounces the word for little rabbit, ``konijntje.'' Bruna has authored 30 Miffy books in addition to almost 100 books for other characters. His books have been translated into 40 different languages, and have sold 80 million copies worldwide. Miffy is beloved in the Netherlands, and in Bruna's hometown of Utrecht, there is even a Nijntje Little Square, named after the character. Bruna had hoped to visit Korea for this rare exhibition, but could not make it due to his age (he turns 82 years old next month) and the long travel time from the Netherlands. The Seoul exhibition begins with a brief introduction of Bruna and how he created Miffy.
