Rediscovering Nacre Lacquerware

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter Lacquerware inlaid with mother-of-pearl, known as ``najeonchilgi,'' has long been regarded as a luxurious item symbolizing wealth and nobility both in the past and present. ``Najeon'' means mother-of-pearl, and ``chilgi'' refers to lacquerware. ``Najeonchilgi'' was synonymous with wealth until the 1970s-80s. But since then, it has quickly declined as a thing of the past, as lifestyles have changed from the traditional to the Western style. ``The Korean nacre lacquerware craft is in the doldrums as it has failed to adapt itself to the new environment and social needs. Without following the change of the times, we have repeated old techniques. That's why nacre lacquerware has lagged behind,'' Kim Sun-kap, a nacre lacquerware artisan, said in an interview with The Korea Times. Nacre-inlaid lacquerware peaked during the Goryeo Kingdom (918-1392). Goryeo ware features sparkling colors, their surfaces densely adorned with tiny, floral shapes made of sea turtle shell and mother-of-pearl. The patterns of ``najeonchilgi'' began to change as the br

Seoul Ballet to Bring Giselle in Brothel

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter Ballet fans may know the tragic yet innocent tale of Giselle, but the Seoul Ballet Theater (SBT) is offering a different, even shocking, interpretation this summer. Led by choreographer James Jeon, ``She, Giselle'' will reinvent the character as an illegitimate child and mother and a prostitute. ``I have enjoyed watching and performing `Giselle' all my life, but as I started working as a choreographer, I wanted to bring something different, something real,'' Jeon said at a press conference in Daehangno, Tuesday. The characters are the same, but the story takes a turn when Giselle realizes that her lover, Albercht, is actually her half-brother. It turns out that Giselle's mother and Albercht's father had an affair in the past, and when Giselle finds out the truth, she runs away without telling Albercht that she's pregnant. The lonely Giselle gives birth to a daughter, only to find that she has no place to go. She ends up in a brothel, where Albercht comes looking for her. The hopeless Giselle gives her daughter to her mother and finally di

Mirror of Eastern Medicine Becomes UNESCO Heritage

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter An encyclopedic medical book written in the 17th century during the Joseon Kingdom was included in the UNESCO's Memory of the World Register, Thursday. The "Donguibogam," literally meaning the "Mirror of Eastern Medicine," was among the 35 items added to the register. It was written by a royal physician, Heo Jun, and published by the Medical Center for the Royal Family of the Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910). The Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea announced Friday that UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura accepted the proposal at the three-day meeting of the International Advisory Committee of UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme held in Bridgetown, Barbados. "Donguibogam received very good reviews. The panel said that the content was original and priceless and that it was a great heritage that is still used in East Asia. They also pointed out the fact that it was used to cure various illnesses for hundreds of commoners, even before Western medicine and treatments arrived in Asia," Choi Young-ho of the administratio

Artist Fills Canvas with Chairs, Memories

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter Chairs hold a special meaning for artist Jae J. Rhee. Tiny chairs made of toothpicks fill the canvas of her artworks, currently on display at her solo show ``Missing You'' at the Art & Museum Gallery, Yeoksam, Gangnam. ``The chair is a symbol of the place I can return to, like home. It's like I can always come back to the chair. It has a special meaning for me. When I was away from my then-boyfriend for six months, and he sent me a picture of the two empty chairs we used to sit in at his garden. It was very touching for me,'' she told The Korea Times over coffee in Chungmuro, Tuesday. In her artwork, the chairs represent the artist's memories of heartbreak and loss. Rhee admitted those painful memories influenced the choice of toothpicks to create the chairs. ``I tried various materials to make the chairs, like chopsticks, but toothpicks are perfect. The toothpick has a sharpened tip. It reflects the pain in my heart. At the gallery opening, one of the staff touched the work, and got hurt from touching the toothpick. There was bl
