By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter Top ballerina Kang Sue-jin is returning for local fans with a special gala performance, ``The Ballet,'' this April. The 42-year-old wowed fans with her performance as Juliet two years ago in Seoul, and this time she will present the history of ballet, ranging from classical to modern. ``It's been two years since the `Romeo and Juliet' performance. Since then, I've only visited Korea for a short time in April last year for a performance at the Seongnam Dance Festival. This time the audience will get to watch me in diverse roles, as I will appear in five different works,'' Kang said. ``The Ballet'' is comprised of seven works: ``The Lady of the Camellias,'' ``Suite No. 2,'' ``Nuages,'' ``Vapour Plains,'' ``Affi,'' ``Ballet 101'' and ``My Way.'' ``Suite No. 2'' and ``Vapour Plains'' will have their Korean premieres. Gala shows, especially in ballet, tend to bring the cream of the crop for each performance. But while it can be a great way to watch a range of famous works, it can be hard to appreciate the overall atmosphere and movement.

Jung Il-woo to Make His Stage Debut

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter Actor Jung Il-woo will make his stage debut in a revival of the play ``Beautiful Sunday'' written by Japanese playwright Mayumi Nakatani. The play touches upon homosexuality through the daily routines of three characters ― a gay couple and a woman. But the drama highlights love, comfort and warm-hearted emotions among modern youngsters rather than focusing on homosexuality itself. The characters fight against social bias and pursue their own love and show how to develop human relations. ``I feel a little bit nervous and at the same time excited because it's my first appearance on stage. Stage art has a different character than television dramas and films. I am looking forward to meeting my fans face to face in the theater,'' Jung said in a statement. ``I have strived to show better acting in every new work. I think I have to build more acting experience and study more. Learning is my lifelong companion while I am acting,'' he said. Jung rose to stardom following his debut in the sitcom ``High Kick'' in which he appeared as a troublema

Sound of Music to Go on Stage as Ballet for First Time

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter ``The Sound of Music,'' the beloved tale of love and music, will be transformed into a ballet for the first time this month. The Nowon Culture and Arts Center is staging the famous work led by dancer and choreographer Lee Won-kuk and ballerina Kim Sun-jeong. This is the first time ``The Sound of Music'' is presented through ballet in the world, according to the makers. ``When we say bringing art to the public, people tend to think of making it too easy and light. Through `The Sound of Music,' we are hoping to break this mold and bring something that is both entertaining and artful,'' the choreographer Ji Woo-young said. The initial idea to come up with a ballet version of ``The Sound of Music'' was made by the producer Kim Hyo. Seeking to bring ballet closer to the public, he dreamt of bringing something that could connect with the audience. ``That was when Ji made a proposal to make a ballet piece that could make people laugh and cry. We thought `The Sound of Music' would be perfect. It's a romantic comedy, but it doesn't move awa

Musical Portrays Mozarts Suffering

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter Sometimes portrayed as a prodigy with a high-pitched laugh, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has been consumed as the genius whose gifts were coveted by the mediocre. The musical “Mozart!” brings the Austrian musician into the spotlight once again but this time he is a suffering human seeking a freer life and hoping to get away from the haunting shadow of being a child prodigy. The child prodigy (Park Eun-tae) grows and under his father’s wishes, he composes music for the ruler of Salzburg, Archbishop Colloredo (Yoon Hyeong-ryeol). Infinite Starburst at PKM Gallery

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter Most contemporary art exhibitions tend to have complicated themes, so it is refreshing when a gallery comes out saying that there's no overall theme. ``The Infinite Starburst of Your Cold Dark Eyes,'' the first collaboration between PKM Gallery and Bartleby Bickle & Meursault, is one such exhibition. ``This exhibition has no curatorial agenda worth expounding (besides, we are allergic to the sort of rote, quasi-theoretical patter that has become endemic in presentations of contemporary art). Our choices have been guided only by our affinities ― emotional, intellectual, sensual ― elicited by the works. Taste and sensibility, in short. This is not to say that these works are without ideas, but their appeal and significance resonate beyond whatever relevance they have to any critically approved concepts,'' the gallery said, on its Web site. Works by nine artists Bae Young-whan, Baik Hyun-jhin, Jonas Dahlberg, Michael Joo, Kim Sang-gil, Lee Bul, Noori Lee, Richard Prince and Thomas Struth are displayed in PKM Gallery in Hwa-dong,
