Please do not lose your mom

Kim Soung-nyo portrays everyone's mom onstage By Kwon Mee-yoo Kim Soung-nyo, 61, becomes “mom” for everyone every night in the new musical “Please Look After Mom” staged at the grand theater in Chungmu Art Hall, central Seoul. Reputed author Shin Kyung-sook’s novel “Please Look After Mom” touched numerous readers in Korea and was recently published in English in the United States. It was staged as a play in 2009 and is now a musical with numbers written by composer Kim Hyung-seok. Kim reflects the image of “mom,” whom people can easily forget during their busy life. She has been on stage for decades, blending song and dance together. “It could be madanggeuk (Korean traditional outdoor play) or a Western style musical. However, though I starred in Broadway musicals such as ‘Porgy and Bess’ and ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,’ I found myself more comfortable in works told in a Korean style,” Kim said. Before joining the musical, she had already read the celebrated book. “My husband first read the book and handed it to me. He cried a lot after reading it and I was w

Korean ballet stars grace intl stages

By Lee Hyo-won The Korean ballet scene sees “counter-exports” of local talent, as dancers of the Korea National Ballet Company are being invited to play lead roles in overseas productions. Kim Ji-young will appear at Teatro Massimo, Palermo at the end of the month. The prima ballerina will play the lead role in Luciano Cannito’s “Cinderella” as a first-cast dancer. Italian theater’s premiere of the piece will take place from May 20 to 25. Last year, Kim performed in productions by the Dutch National Ballet and the Rome Opera Ballet. Ballerina Kim Li-hoe and ballerino Jung Young-jae will take part in an international classic ballet festival held annually in Tatarstan, Russia, in honor of the late legend Rudolf Nuriev. The dancers will play Nikita and Solor in “The Bayadere” as part of a gala presentation on May 28. They will showcase the famous Talisman pas-de-deux. Appreciate modern art in downtown Plateau

By Kwon Mee-yoo Rodin Gallery, located in Taepyeong-no amid highrise office buildings, seeks to explore the meaning of its space through the “Space Study” exhibition, after changing the name to “Plateau.” It originally opened in 1999, displaying two works of famed sculptor Auguste Rodin — “The Gates of Hell” and “The Burghers of Calais.” The officials explained that the former name was somewhat misleading as the gallery is not wholly dedicated to Rodin’s works. Hong Ra-young, deputy director of Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art which operates Plateau, said the new name means high plains or sedimentary layers piling up on the artistic highland of the past where artists and art lovers aim to be. The gallery housed various modern art exhibitions including “Yes Yoko Ono” in 2003, but closed down after photographer Atta Kim’s 2008 exhibition “On-Air” due to a special probe into the Samsung Group. The first exhibition of Plateau is titled “Space Study.” The exhibit literally explores the comprehensive meaning of the Plateau as a place and space in general. A total of 14

Weekender Musical, incubated

By Kwon Mee-yoo Some 120 seats of a small theater in CJ Azit in Mapo District, Seoul, were filled with an audience who came to see the reading of the musical “The Goddess Is Watching of You” on April 25. There were not only ordinary spectators but also directors, producers and investors on the floor. The eight actors sat in a row of simple black chairs in front of a music stand. They sometimes held the script and read it. There were not many props, but the actors portrayed a tense, but humorous situation during the Korean War (1950-53) when six soldiers — four from the North and two from the South — were isolated on an uninhabited island along with an imaginary “goddess.” The musical is the virgin work of scriptwriter Han Jung-suk, 28, and composer Lee Sun-young, 28, supported by the CJ Creative Minds program which was launched in 2010. The April performance was a reading, a process in development. Han is a graduate of the Department of Creative Writing at Chung-Ang University and Lee worked as an assistant music director in major productions including “Don J

Yu-nas Giselle fuels ballet fever

By Lee Hyo-won Figure skater Kim Yu-na’s poignant interpretation of Giselle at the Moscow world championships is further hyping the local ballet trend. Ballet, long regarded an acquired taste here, gained wider mainstream exposure recently as the Academy Award-winning dance film “Black Swan” enjoyed box office success and popular comedians parodied ballerinos on television. The Korea National Ballet Company made headlines in February as its rendition of “Giselle” became a smash success, selling out for the first time in the troupe’s 50-year history. Kim, who has inspired top-selling classical music albums through skating to scores by Saint-Saens, is boosting ticket sales for ballet performances here, say local dance companies. After the box office opened on April 29 for the Universal Ballet Company’s “Giselle,” which will be showcased in June as part of a ballet festival, 25 percent of the tickets were sold in just three days, according to organizers. The rate is considerably high compared to other ballet programs. “We received many inquiries even before the box
