A female member of Dong Choon Circus Troupe performs an aerial stunt on Daebu Island, Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, Mar. 8. Her male partner on the floor is holding the other end of the rope. / Korea Times Photos by Choi Won-sukKorea’s oldest circus battles to survive amid government apathyBy Ko Dong-hwanWhen a male voice boisterously announced the start of Dong Choon Circus Troupe’s daily show on a sunny afternoon on March 8, about 20 audience members ― from a young couple in their 20s to a group of elderly patrons ― gave a generous round of applause. The visitors are appreciative because the day’s show in the 600-seat yellow tent on Daebu Island in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, would have been cancelled if there were fewer than 10 people, according to circus policy.Fifteen nerve-wrecking displays ran for 90 minutes on stage, beside which a banner reading “Tradition and Trust Established Since 1925” and “From Memory to Art Circus” hung from ceiling. The performers ― 10 women and nine men ― ended the show by presenting themselves to the audience.

Walking into world of numerals

Artist Yoo Hyun-mi, right, in her installation piece "Mathematician's Eyes" / Courtesy of the artist and Savina MuseumBy Kwon Mee-yooArtist Yoo Hyun-mi is like a magician who blends 2D and 3D perspectives by combining sculpture, painting and photographs. At a solo exhibition titled “Number’s Eyes” at the Savina Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, Yoo expands her world to a more symbolic phase.Yoo is mostly well known for making sculptures, painting the sculptures and taking photographs of the painted works. At first, these works look like oil paintings. However, when examined closely, these are photographs printed on canvas."I have been taking pictures of painted reality for 10 years now. I first make sculptures and paint them to give shade. Then I take pictures of the painted sculpture," Yoo said. "By doing this, I gain the merits of the formativeness of sculpture, the sensitivity of painting and the documentability of photograph altogether."This exhibition centers on numerals, which has been a recurring theme in Yoo's works. While the previous works featured colo

Photo exhibition explores human vulnerability

Yoo Mi-young, president of Space OPT Studio in Cheongdam-dong, southern Seoul, looks at photographs that are part of the “1km, Vulnerability,” exhibition. / Korea Times Photo by Eom Da-solBy Eom Da-solCourtesy of Park Young-kyuCourtesy of Park Young-kyuEight portraits of models were hanging on the wall of an exhibition hall in Seoul. They appeared to have different themes: gazing at the camera naked; wearing a black dress and holding a bouquet of roses against the backdrop of a red curtain; a long-haired stony-faced woman in sweater with frills of knotted cotton; and others. But the feeling and atmosphere emanating from the works was strangely the same: lonely, helpless and vulnerable. This was a snapshot of the exhibition hosted by up and coming photographer Park Young-kyu. The event, at the Space OPT Studio in Cheongdam-dong, southern Seoul, is entitled “1km, Vulnerability,” and will continue through Mar. 22.For the exhibition, his first of this kind, Park spent two years photographing 101 women he met through popular dating app “1km” ― a

'Opinion collection' crucial to prevent future blacklist

By Yun Suh-youngArtists who were victimized by the "blacklist" that the Park Geun-hye administration had apparently created to filter out artists who seemed "leftists" or spoke against the government welcomed the Constitutional Court’s decision to remove Park from office, Friday.Thespians who were disadvantaged by the blacklist on artists announced their position in front of the "Black Tent" in Gwanghwamun that they had established in January to hold performances in protest of the blacklist scandal until President Park was ousted."Truth wins out in the long run. This impeachment is a natural outcome," said Song Hyeong-jong, president of the Seoul Theater Association."It's time to build a new era. Officials in the culture ministry who are responsible for this scandal should resign," he said on his social network account.Director Lee Hae-sung, who was in charge of the "Black Tent" set up in Gwanghwamun Plaza, said, "So many people went through difficulty and sacrifice to achieve something that was a matter of course. Ahn discovers paradox from everyday objects

These ordinary yet paradoxical objects are part of artist Ahn Kyu-chul's solo exhibit "Words Just for You" at the Kukje Gallery in downtown Seoul.Ahn, 61, is one of the top conceptual artists in Korea. The modifier "conceptual" is often associated with being abstruse, but Ahn's works are straightforward with a twist. Some of the works on display look like children's toys. "Lingering Time I" consists of wooden tracks installed in a zigzag course and a wooden ball that rolls down the track. Visitors can climb up a ladder and try rolling the ball from the top. The title refers to the time a viewer has to stay in front of the artwork to see the ball slowly rolling down the track,
