Seoul to hold contest featuring Psy's horse-riding dance

Tens of thousands of people in South Korea are expected to join a local dance contest this week to show off their best horse-riding dance moves, and it will be broadcast live worldwide, organizers said Monday.

The dance contest to be held in central Seoul on Saturday will likely attract about 30,000 people seeking to compete with the signature dance featured in Psy's global hit song "Gangnam Style."

"Gangnam Style" quickly became a global sensation in just a few months after its debut as its music video spawned a series of copycat videos on the Internet. The music video, highlighted by Psy's comic horse-riding dance moves, recently topped the 300 million mark on Youtube.

Earlier in the day, the song jumped to No. 1 in the Official Singles Chart of Britain, the first time that a Korean signer has conquered the British music chart.

Last week, it also soared to second place on Billboard's Hot 100 chart and its updated rankings are to be released later this week, raising hopes that the song could top the Billboard chart.

The organizers said that the contest will also be broadcast live worldwide through Reuters TV, a TV service of the world's news agency, which holds 230 branches in 150 countries.

"We have received a cooperation request from Reuters TV to broadcast the event live across the world," an official said.

The event is sponsored by the Dongdaemun District of Seoul and the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture. It will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday and last until 10 p.m. (Yonhap)
