    N. Korea calls denuclearization 'irreversibly finalized' matter

North Korea on Sunday called denuclearization an "irreversibly finalized" matter as it denounced recent talks between South Korea and the United States that reaffirmed the goal of the North's denuclearization. An unnamed spokesperson of the North's foreign ministry issued the criticism, after South Korea and the United States reaffirmed the shared goal at the bilateral Nuclear Consultative Group meeting on Thursday. "It is an unreasonable talk and fantastic daydream to mention about disarming the other belligerent party's nuclear weapons," the spokesperson said in a statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). "The U.S. and its vassal forces' meaningless rhetoric against the DPRK and cooperation in posing a nuclear threat to it can never affect the irreversible position of the DPRK as a nuclear weapons state," the spokesperson said. "The 'denuclearization' is an irreversibly finalized matter." DPRK stands for the North's official name — the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The spokesperson also took issue with the bilateral Extended Deterrence Dialogue between the U

Russia agrees to NK doctors' internships in Moscow hospitals, pharmaceuticals modernization

Russia has agreed to continue North Korean doctors' internships in Moscow hospitals and assist the North in modernizing its pharmaceutical products, including antibiotics, the Russian Embassy in Pyongyang said Tuesday. The Russian Embassy disclosed the agreement on its Facebook account, citing Ambassador to North Korea Alexandr Matsegora's meeting with Vice Public Health Minister Jon Sol-ryong the previous day. Jon returned to North Korea on Monday after his visit to Russia, accompanied by a working-level delegation from his ministry, to discuss bilateral cooperation on public health. The embassy said that during Jon's visit, Russia agreed to allow doctors from Pyongyang to continue their internships at top medical centers in Moscow in various fields, including cardiology and oncology. Moscow also agreed to assist in the modernization of North Korean pharmaceuticals, particularly the production of modern antibiotics, according to the embassy. Both sides also discussed creating new medical institutions in North Korea, while Pyongyang expressed its willingness to share information regarding

Industry minister discusses LNG project, bolstering bilateral cooperation with visiting Alaska governor

Korean Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun discussed the U.S. administration's gas pipeline development project with the visiting governor of Alaska on Tuesday, as well as measures to bolster bilateral cooperation between Seoul and Washington in various areas, the industry ministry said. Ahn met with Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy to discuss Alaska's liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, a key agenda of the Donald Trump administration, and other areas of cooperation, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Dunleavy arrived here earlier in the day on a two-day visit and was scheduled to meet with senior Seoul government officials, including acting President Han Duck-soo, and major business leaders. The Alaska LNG project has emerged as a hot issue in Korea with expectations that Seoul's participation in the project will help the country in its tariff negotiations with the U.S. amid Trump's push to boost oil and gas production. The project, estimated at $44 billion, aims to build a 1,287-kilometer pipeline from the North Slope, a proven massive reserve of natural gas, to southern Al

Ministry says Korea, US consulting on high-level communication amid hopes for Han-Trump call

Korea's foreign ministry said Tuesday that Seoul and Washington are holding working-level discussions on "high-level communications" amid expectations the reinstatement of acting President Han Duck-soo may lead to his first phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump. The ministry's spokesperson, Lee Jae-woong, disclosed the move during a press briefing a day after the Constitutional Court rejected Han's impeachment, nearly three months after he was impeached in connection with President Yoon Suk Yeol's short-lived martial law imposition on Dec. 3. Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok, who had been serving as acting president until Monday, had not held any phone calls with Trump since his return to the presidency in January, apparently due to the leadership vacuum. When asked about the possibility of a phone call between Han and Trump, Lee said, "Both Korea and the U.S. share the importance of high-level communications." "For this, consultations are under way between (the two countries') working-level personnel," he said. (Yonhap)

Acting president returns, eyes talks with Trump to restart summit diplomacy

Acting President Han Duck-soo is back in office with critical tasks ahead, one of which is engaging with U.S. President Donald Trump to revive the stalled summit-level diplomacy between the allies, which has been on hold for months. Han, who was reinstated by the Constitutional Court on Monday after being suspended for 87 days due to impeachment, will continue serving as the acting leader while President Yoon Suk Yeol remains suspended from duty since Dec. 14. Former acting President Choi Sang-mok has now reverted to his role as finance minister and deputy prime minister. A seasoned technocrat with extensive experience in economic and diplomatic affairs, Han previously served as Korea’s ambassador to the U.S. and has played a key role in trade negotiations between the two countries. A direct phone call with Trump, which Choi had sought since Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 21 but failed to secure, is expected to be Han’s top priority as he works to alleviate growing concerns over Korea being sidelined in U.S. diplomatic engagements. The current gap in summit diplomacy is more evident

Mike Dunleavy, the governor of the U.S. state of Alaska, arrived in Korea on Tuesday for high-level meetings with senior government officials and major business leaders, a Seoul-based American business chamber said. The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) said Dunleavy is scheduled to meet acting President Han Duck-soo, Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun and Joseph Yun, acting U.S. ambassador to Korea, during his two-day trip. Upon arriving, Dunleavy met with Kim Dong-yeon, the governor of Gyeonggi Province, to discuss cooperation between the local governments. The governor will also hold talks with executives from key Korean conglomerates, including SK, POSCO and Hanwha. AMCHAM, which facilitated the meetings, said the discussions will focus on strengthening partnerships in core industries, such as energy, infrastructure and advanced manufacturing. The visit is expected to yield progress in expanding investment and supply chain cooperation, as well as building sustainable economic ties between Alaska and Korea, the chamber said. Vice FM, deputy UN chief discuss cooperation on N. Korean issues in New York

Second Vice Foreign Minister Kang In-sun has met with U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed and discussed cooperation on North Korean issues, among other topics, the foreign ministry said Tuesday. The meeting took place on Monday in New York as part of Kang's four-day trip, which also included a high-level open debate on U.N. peace operations as well as a briefing on the situation in Syria. During the meeting, Kang requested that the United Nations continue issuing strong messages denouncing North Korea's violations of U.N. Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, such as its illegal military alignment with Russia. Kang held a separate meeting with Haoliang Xu, associate administrator of the U.N. Development Programme, and proposed continuing to carry out more effective and influential joint projects. Attending a UNSC high-level open debate on strengthening U.N. peace operations Monday, the vice foreign minister also underscored the need to develop missions tailored to each peace operation unit in order to help the UNSC effectively address changing realities, the ministry said. Vice veteran minister to attend independence fighter's memorial ceremony in China

Korea will send a vice minister-led government delegation to China this week to attend a memorial ceremony honoring independence activist Ahn Jung-geun (1879-1910), the veterans ministry said Tuesday. The delegation, led by Vice Veterans Minister Lee Hee-wan, will attend the ceremony marking the 115th death anniversary of the renowned independence fighter at a prison-turned-museum in the northeastern Chinese city of Dalian on Wednesday, the ministry said. It marks the first time the ministry would send a vice minister-led delegation to the annual event. The ministry said the decision came as this year marks Ahn's 115th death anniversary, as well as Korea's 80th anniversary of liberation from Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule. Ahn shot and killed Ito Hirobumi, Japan's first prime minister and resident-general of Korea, on Oct. 26, 1909, at Harbin Station in northern China. Five months after the assassination, he was executed at the age of 31. The ministry vowed continued efforts to honor independence fighters like Ahn and said it plans to launch a civilian-government consultative body to disc

Korea's industry localization in Egypt key to boosting bilateral cooperation: top Egypt envoy

Korea's efforts to localize its industries in Egypt, such as defense manufacturing and infrastructure, will help further strengthen cooperation between the two countries, the top Egyptian envoy to Seoul has said. Egyptian Ambassador to Korea Khaled Abdel Rahman made the remarks, emphasizing that his country's initiatives in these sectors create many opportunities for Korean businesses to expand their presence in the Arab-African nation — occupying a strategically vital position linking Africa, the Middle East and Asia. "We are at a pivot point in the route of world trade," Abdel Rahman said in an interview with Yonhap News Agency on Monday, pointing out Egypt's geographical position with the Mediterranean Sea to the north and the Red Sea to the east. "I think the keyword here is localizing the industry in Egypt. If the Korean firm is keen to cooperate with Egypt, their offer should include localizing the industry in Egypt," the ambassador said. In this vein, Abdel Rahman expressed hope Korea's bid to export FA-50 light attack aircraft and anti-tank missiles to Egypt will produce a posi

N. Korea to host large-scale art festival for founder Kim Il-sung's upcoming birthday

North Korea on Tuesday announced the hosting of a large-scale art festival to mark the birth anniversary of national founder Kim Il-sung next month. The April Spring People's Art Festival will take place at several venues in Pyongyang, including the People's Palace of Culture, from April 10-17, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported ahead of Kim's birthday on April 15. The KCNA described the festival as celebrating Kim's revolutionary life and achievements, as well as current leader Kim Jong-un's guidance of the nation toward power and prosperity and the determination, loyalty and ethics of the North Korean people. Members of art troupes from institutions, companies, factories and farms across the regions will participate in the festival, the KCNA said. The birth anniversary of Kim Il-sung, the grandfather of the current leader, is one of North Korea's most-celebrated national holidays, alongside that of Kim Jong-il, the predecessor and father of the incumbent leader.
