Korean gov't condemns attack on Korean-operated vessel in Strait of Hormuz

The presidential office on Monday condemned attacks on a bulk carrier operated by the Korean shipping company HMM near the Strait of Hormuz, calling attacks on civilian vessels unacceptable. While the government has not made a conclusion over who attacked the HMM Namu, National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac said it will join international efforts to guarantee safe passage and operation of ships through the strait. “The government strongly condemns attacks on civilian vessels such as the HMM Namu, as such actions cannot be justified or tolerated,” Wi said during a press briefing at Cheong Wa Dae. “We intend to identify the perpetrator, the exact type of equipment used and its physical specifications through further investigation. Accordingly, we will also consider necessary response measures.” His remarks came a day after the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the initial findings regarding the investigation into the cause of an explosion and fire aboard HMM Namu. The ministry, citing an investigative team dispatched to the scene, said two separate airborne objects struck the shi

Lee to visit New York next week to attend UN General Assembly

President Lee Jae Myung will travel to New York on Monday to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly and meet with U.S. and global leaders, his office said Friday. Lee will begin his trip Monday with a meeting with Larry Fink, CEO and chairman of BlackRock and chair of the World Economic Forum, to discuss cooperation on artificial intelligence and energy transition, according to National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac. He will also meet members of the U.S. Congress to discuss bilateral ties and hold a gathering with Korean residents in New York. On Tuesday, Lee will deliver a keynote address at the General Assembly, becoming the seventh world leader to take the podium among more than 190 scheduled speakers. He is expected to declare Korea’s return to democratic principles, outline Seoul’s vision for the Korean Peninsula, and present its contributions to global peace and prosperity. China's Xi may hold summit talks with Lee in Seoul around APEC visit

President Lee Jae Myung may hold summit talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Seoul when Xi visits Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders' meeting late next month, a Seoul official said Friday. Beijing has yet to make an official announcement, but Xi is widely expected to come to the southern city of Gyeongju to attend the multilateral summit of major economies, set for Oct. 31-Nov. 1. "We are in talks with Beijing on arranging a visit by President Xi and possibly holding a bilateral (summit) on the occasion of his APEC attendance," a foreign ministry official said on the condition of anonymity. If realized, it would mark Xi's first visit to Korea in 11 years. Xi last paid a state visit to Seoul in July 2014 at the invitation of then President Park Geun-hye. The envisioned summit between Lee and Xi is likely to take place in Seoul, rather than Gyeongju, given the logistical considerations and the weight of the high-stakes talks. It remains unclear whether the likely summit will be held before or after the APEC event, and in what form, but both sides are report

N. Korea gave $9.8 bil in weapons to Russia but received $1.2 bil. in Ukraine war deal: report

North Korea has sent about $10 billion worth of weapons and troops to Russia under their deal to support Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, but Pyongyang has received comparatively limited compensation, according to a report Friday. The report, commissioned by the Korea Office of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, said it showed signs of "unequal partnership" between North Korea and Russia although they have intensified their military cooperation. The report said North Korea has provided weapons, ammunition and troops worth up to $9.8 billion, or more than one-third of the North's annual estimated economic output, since 2023. In contrast, Russia's direct compensation to the North is estimated at a maximum of $1.2 billion, which includes mainly food and oil assistance, along with "a small number of air defense systems, GPS jammers and possibly fighter aircraft." The report noted there is "no evidence" to support concerns that Russia has played a direct role in North Korea's technological modernization, saying the reclusive nation's economy also remains in a dire situation under this

Trade minister says has explained differences between Korea, Japan to US

Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo said Friday he emphasized the differences between Korea and Japan during recent talks with the United States, as the two countries have been in negotiations to hash out specifics of a bilateral trade deal struck in late July. Speaking to reporters at Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul, upon returning from a trip to Washington, D.C., Yeo said he emphasized the distinction between the two countries during a meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Their meeting marked the latest round of negotiations between Seoul and Washington, following a separate meeting last week between Korean Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan and U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in New York. "I tried to explain as thoroughly as possible (to the U.S. side) that Japan and Korea are different," Yeo told reporters. On July 30, the two sides reached a framework deal under which U.S. President Donald Trump's administration agreed to lower "reciprocal" tariffs on Korea and sectoral tariffs on Korean autos to 15 percent from 25 percent in return for Korea's commitment t

N. Korea's Kim oversees performance test of tactical attack drones

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has overseen a performance test of tactical attack drones, stressing the need to advance applicable artificial intelligence (AI) technology and bolster their operational capabilities, state media reported Friday. FM Cho reaffirms Korea's support for 'two-state solution' in call with Palestinian counterpart

Foreign Minister Cho Hyun on Thursday reaffirmed Korea's continued support for a "two-state solution" to the Israel-Palestine conflict in his first phone talks with his Palestinian counterpart, Seoul's foreign ministry said. Cho spoke by phone with Palestine's Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin, as he expressed "deep concern" over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza amid the escalating conflict, the ministry said in a release. "Minister Cho called for an immediate ceasefire and swift improvement in humanitarian conditions, reaffirmed Seoul's consistent support for a two-state solution and conveyed concern over measures that undermine it, such as (Israel's) settlement construction," the ministry said. A two-state solution calls for Israel and Palestine to co-exist in peace, creating an independent Palestinian state separate from the state of Israel without undermining Israel's sovereignty. It is an approach long supported by the international community. Cho noted that Korea has been providing humanitarian assistance to civilians affected by the conflict in Gaza and pledged to

FM Cho discusses advancing bilateral relations with Belgian counterpart

Foreign Minister Cho Hyun discussed Thursday efforts to advance bilateral relations with Belgium during his first talks with his counterpart of the European country, including increasing high-level exchanges and practical cooperation. The talks between Cho and Maxime Prevot, Belgium's deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs, European affairs and development cooperation, took place in what marked the first visit to Seoul by Belgium's top diplomat in 14 years, Seoul's foreign ministry said. In the talks, Prevot highlighted the special bond forged between the two countries when 3,500 Belgian troops fought alongside Korea during the 1950-53 Korean War. He noted bilateral cooperation has since expanded across various fields and voiced hope that his visit would help reinvigorate high-level exchanges and broaden the scope of cooperation to such areas as economic security and defense. Cho briefed his counterpart on Seoul's efforts to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula and called for Belgium's support and cooperation in that regard. The two ministers also exchanges views on Europe
