ReviewSpielberg returns to familiar territory with ‘Disclosure Day’

Master of science fiction Steven Spielberg returns to the world of extraterrestrials with “Disclosure Day,” his fourth film centered on alien encounters. Nearly five decades after “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” (1977) and more than 20 years after “War of the Worlds” (2005), the veteran filmmaker attempts to combine the sense of wonder that defined his earlier works with the tension of a modern political thriller. The story expands on themes explored in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1982) and “War of the Worlds.” Unlike those films, however, “Disclosure Day” focuses less on the aliens themselves and more on humanity’s response to them. At the center of the story is Wardex, a secretive military organization that has hidden evidence of extraterrestrial life for decades while conducting controversial experiments on alien visitors. The plot begins when Daniel Kellner (Josh O’Connor) decides to leak classified information about the coverup. A cybersecurity expert working inside Wardex, he risks everything to expose the

'The King's Warden' tops 7 mil. admissions

The historical film "The King's Warden" has topped a cumulative 7 million admissions in the domestic box office, data from the Korean Film Council showed Saturday. The film has drawn a total of 7.01 million moviegoers as of Friday since its release Feb. 4, more than double its break-even point of approximately 2.6 million. Directed by Jang Hang-jun, whose previous works include the action comedy "Break Out" (2002) and the sports drama "Rebound" (2023), "The King's Warden" reimagines historical events through a fictional lens, following the unlikely friendship between village chief Eom Heung-do (Yoo Hai-jin) and the young, deposed King Danjong (Park Ji-hoon) during the latter's exile in the village.

K-pop Report Card What landed, what didn't and what to skip from Jan.-Feb.

K-pop wasted little time setting the tone for 2026. January and February arrived packed with heavyweight comebacks from the genre's biggest names alongside ambitious debuts from new acts eager to claim their place. LNGSHOT — "Moonwalkin'" from "SHOT CALLERS," released Jan. 13 Verdict: Surprisingly good While the rookie boy band's predebut release, "Saucin'," made it easy to assume that LNGSHOT would fall neatly into a hip-hop rivalry narrative with HYBE Labels' CORTIS, “Moonwalkin’,” the official title track of the four-member band's debut album "SHOT CALLERS," arrived and quietly refused that storyline. Where CORTIS leans playful, LNGSHOT chooses a more grounded, groove-heavy lane, almost like rookies deciding they would rather age well than trend fast. Handling accessible R&B and hip-hop without sounding like an industry plant is harder than it looks, and the group clears that bar with ease. There are also obvious nods to pop icons Michael Jackson, Destiny’s Child and even early Justin Bieber, especially in one member’s vocal tone that feels tailor-made for global pop ears.

Girls' Generation's Tiffany, actor Byun Yo-han get married

Tiffany Young, a Korean American member of K-pop band Girls' Generation, married actor Byun Yo-han on Friday, Byun's agency said. The two legally registered their marriage "based on their deep trust and love for each other," and wedding plans are still in the making, TEAMHOPE said. "They are at the stage of carefully considering a simple wedding ceremony in the form of a church service where they share their gratitude with family members," the agency said. "As they start a new journey of life, they plan to remember the support and love sent to them until now and repay by showing a more mature side of themselves." Since debuting in 2011, Byun has starred in various hit TV dramas and movies, including "Misaeng" (2014) and "Mr. Sunshine" (2018). Tiffany, who rose to global fame as a member of Girls' Generation, ended her contract with SM Entertainment in 2017 and expanded her career with acting roles in "Reborn Rich" (2022) and Disney+'s Korean original series "Uncle Samsik" (2024). The two reportedly became close while working together on "Uncle Samsik" and publicly disclosed their relation

BLACKPINK turns Korea’s flagship museum pink for ‘DEADLINE’ comeback

The National Museum of Korea (NMK) is designed to protect and showcase centuries of the nation's history. For nearly two weeks, its monumental “Path of History” is doing something else entirely: pulsing to the beats of K-pop icon BLACKPINK's new release. Ahead of the girl group's third mini-album "DEADLINE," which drops Friday at 2 p.m., BLACKPINK partnered with the country's flagship museum for a special project running through March 8. The collaboration opened with a prerelease listening event held inside the museum's main ground floor atrium, Thursday, marking the first time the institution has allowed its symbolic central space to be used for a K-pop partnership. Beneath an eight-meter digital rendering of the Gwanggaeto Stele, a towering monument commemorating the Goruryeo era's (37 BCE-668 CE) King Gwanggaeto the Great, guests formed a loose but eager circle as the album's five new tracks filled the vast hall. From the viral prerelease single "JUMP" to its widely-anticipated title track "GO," the music reverberated against stone and glass surfaces more accustomed to the quiet

Korea's content industry exports hit record level

Korea's content industry exports hit a record high in 2024, fueled by the global boom of Korean pop culture, known as "hallyu," the government said Friday. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism reported that the industry's exports totaled $14.08 billion in 2024, up 5.5 percent from 2023. It marked the highest level since the ministry began tracking the data and the second consecutive record-breaking year. During the same period, imports came to $915.56 million, resulting in a trade surplus of $13.159 billion. The content industry is an umbrella term encompassing publishers, broadcasters, advertisers and firms producing music, computer games, animations, movies, musicals and other creative content. The game industry remained the dominant force, accounting for 60.4 percent of total content exports, or $8.5 billion. The music industry followed with $1.8 billion, while the broadcasting and video sector earned $1.26 billion. The content industry's total revenue also rose 2.1 percent to 157.4 trillion won ($107.2 billion) from a year earlier, buoyed by stronger exports. Broadcasting and v

AKMU's Lee Chan-hyuk, Jennie sweep major prizes at Korean Music Awards

Lee Chan-hyuk, the brother of the sibling duo AKMU, clinched three prizes, including Song of the Year, at this year's Korean Music Awards (KMA) held late Thursday, an event that prizes artistic achievement over commercial popularity. Lee emerged as the night's most decorated artist, taking home Song of the Year and Best Pop Song for "Endangered Love" and Best Pop Album for "Eros" during the ceremony broadcast live on the local music streaming platform Melon and YouTube, according to the KMA website. "Eros" is the first solo album from the singer in two years and nine months since his solo debut album, "Error," in October 2022. The new album was lauded by critics for its exploration of mortality and the emotional aftermath of loss. While not the album's lead single, "Endangered Love" saw a dramatic rise on domestic charts following a viral performance by Lee at the Blue Dragon Film Awards in November. BLACKPINK's Jennie also secured two trophies — Best K-pop Album for her solo project "Ruby" and Best K-pop Song for its lead track "like Jennie." Rookie of the Year went to singer-songwrite

Fans get first listen to BLACKPINK's new album at National Museum of Korea

The lights inside the National Museum of Korea in central Seoul had already gone out for the night Thursday, but the marble-floored lobby still buzzed with quiet excitement. Dozens of BLACKPINK fans, phones raised and faces lit by a soft pink light, walked toward the end of the main corridor where an exclusive prelistening of the girl group's new album was about to begin. The event, co-hosted by the K-pop quartet and the museum in partnership with Spotify, offered about 300 selected fans a rare preview of "Deadline," a day before the album's release. It marks the quartet's first album involving all members in four years since "Born Pink." In the corridor known as the "path of history," a giant carpet reading "BLACKPINK WILL MAKE YOU" led visitors to a seating zone surrounding the digitally restored Gwanggaeto the Great Stele. The memorial stele for the tomb of Gwanggaeto the Great, the 19th monarch of the ancient Korean kingdom of Goguryeo (37 B.C.-A.D. 668), is an iconic national heritage of ancient Korean history. As the opening beats of last year's prerelease track "Jump" reverberated
