EJAE, Andrea Bocelli perform at World Cup opening ceremony

Singer-songwriter EJAE, who performed the hit song “Golden” from the popular animated film “KPop Demon Hunters,” joined renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli in performing FIFA's official World Cup anthem, “DNA,” at the tournament's opening ceremony in Mexico City, Thursday (local time). Wearing a sleeveless blue gown with crossed halter straps, the Korean American singer drew attention from Korean audiences by singing a brief line in Korean: “Although I fall, I stand up again.” FIFA said “DNA” embodies the spirit of solidarity and unity for the historic tournament, which is being co-hosted for the first time by three countries — the United States, Canada and Mexico. The competition will be held across 16 cities and feature 48 teams until July 19.

TWS lands on Rolling Stone’s ‘Future 25,’ set for Seoul fan meeting this week

K-pop group TWS has made it to Rolling Stone magazine’s “Future 25” list, earning recognition as one of the acts the publication sees as likely to help shape the future of music. Rolling Stone announced this year’s “Future 25” list on its website Thursday. The annual project selects 25 artists or industry figures expected to influence the direction of music, and this year’s lineup included TWS. “The most exciting and energetic young K-pop groups today,” the magazine wrote in introducing the group. “They’ve won praise for their music, their stage presence, and their model-like visuals.” Rolling Stone said the six-member group has embraced a feel-good pop sound built on retro influences, lush harmonies and clever wordplay. It also described “Overdrive,” the title track of TWS’ fourth mini album “playhard,” as a viral hit. In an interview with Rolling Stone, TWS said the boyhood pop genre — the term which the group uses to define its music — is ever widening and broadening. “It could be exciting, it could bring peace and comfort, or it could deliver po

BTS' 'Arirang' sells record 4.17 million copies in debut week

K-pop megastars BTS' latest album, "Arirang," sold about 4.17 million copies in its first week, data from music sales tracker Hanteo Chart showed Friday. Released last Friday, the album broke the group's own record for first-week sales, exceeding its previous mark of 3.37 million copies set by "Map of the Soul: 7" in 2020. In the K-pop industry, first-week sales are considered an important measure of an artist's popularity and fandom size. "Arirang" sold 1 million copies within about 10 minutes of its release and 3.98 million on the first day alone, the highest first-day sales of any album released in 2026, according to the group's agency BigHit Music. On Apple Music, "Arirang" has topped album charts in 115 countries and regions around the world. The album also recorded the highest first-day streaming numbers of any BTS release, making the group the most-streamed artist on Apple Music last Friday. The lead track "Swim" has stayed at No. 1 on Spotify's Daily Top Songs Global chart for six consecutive days, from March 20 to 25. In Japan, "Arirang" debuted atop Oricon's weekly combined album

Foreigners account for 25% of BTS comeback concert crowd

Foreigners accounted for a quarter of attendees of K-pop group BTS' comeback concert in downtown Seoul last weekend, city data showed Friday. A total of 19,170 foreigners attended the event at Gwanghwamun Square on Saturday evening, accounting for about 25 percent of 75,927 people in the area at the time, according to the data from the Seoul city government. Among the foreigners, 13,898 were long-term visitors, indicating that most of them were residents in the country, such as students, not tourists, the latest data showed. The city earlier gave real-time estimates of up to 48,000 people in the area, but a city official said the latest figures are more accurate as they are based on base station data. By nationality, 1,740 Thais are presumed to have attended the event, followed by 1,184 Vietnamese, 1,126 Indians and 1,098 Japanese, according to the data, which also analyzes foreigner entry statistics. Police had initially expected the concert to draw up to 260,000 people, prompting strict crowd control and safety measures.

InterviewAfter long hiatus, Bae Sung-woo tests waters with new movie

For a leading actor here, a drunk driving scandal often leads to an immediate and prolonged halt in their career. For actor Bae Sung-woo, the release of the crime action film "The Ultimate Duo" follows a long, self-imposed hiatus that began after he fell from the height of his career due to a highly publicized legal controversy. Bae was once considered one of the industry’s most sought-after actors, successfully transitioning from a reliable supporting player to a powerful leading man. After years of adding depth to various films, he proved his star power in the 2015 thriller "The Phone." He then earned widespread acclaim for his portrayal of a righteous police officer in the 2018 tvN drama "Live," a role that resonated deeply with viewers. In 2019, his career reached a new peak with the box office success of horror film "Metamorphosis," where he took on the demanding lead role of an exorcist priest. However, his activities came to an abrupt stop in 2020. While starring in the SBS drama "Delayed Justice," Bae was caught driving under the influence on a day he was not filming. The incid

Trial opens for Ador's damage suit against former NewJeans member, ex-CEO

A trial for the damage suit filed by Ador, a subsidiary of K-pop giant HYBE Labels, against former NewJeans member Danielle and former Ador CEO Min Hee-jin opened on Thursday, showing no end in sight for the dispute that began in 2024. In December last year, Ador filed the damage suit against the idol, her mother and the label's former CEO, claiming 43.1 billion won ($28.6 mil.) in compensation for causing delay to the resumption of NewJeans' activities. At the preliminary hearing held at the Seoul Central District Court on Thursday, legal representatives of the label and the idol clashed over the pace of the proceedings. "Danielle is an idol, and this is the most brilliant period of her career," her legal representatives said accusing Ador of dragging out the case, also pointing to the inclusion of Danielle's mother in the suit. "If this lawsuit is drawn out, she (Danielle) will inevitably suffer harm. Ador, as an entertainment agency, knows this well." Ador's legal team rejected the characterization, arguing that the lawsuit concerned damages and penalties only and had no bearing on Da

BTS is back with Jimmy Fallon, performs 'SWIM' at Guggenheim Museum

BTS appeared on NBC's "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" on Wednesday night to talk about its new album and its recent live performance at the heart of Seoul. As frequent visitors to the show, the seven members were visibly at home, chatting with Fallon with ease and warmth. Reflecting on the recent performance at the historic Gwanghwamun Square, which was livestreamed globally on Netflix, J-hope said, "We did everything we could to prepare and show it to you. We have even more to show you going forward." On their fifth studio album "ARIRANG," RM explained the title is a folk song that every Korean grows up listening and knowing. "We hope that our new songs can carry that same universal appeal (to global fans)." Jin spoke about the joy of being back together as a team, saying, "With the members back by my side, even the same moves felt more powerful and confident. I realized how much they mean to me." BTS turns cities into stages with ‘ARIRANG’ comeback spectacle

The global return of BTS did not begin with a song alone. It lit up skylines, bridged continents and turned some of the world’s most recognizable landmarks into a synchronized stage. The seven-member group unveiled a sweeping multimedia project, “BTS THE CITY ARIRANG,” late Wednesday, releasing a compilation video on its official YouTube channel that stitched together celebrations in Seoul, London and New York into a single, immersive spectacle. The campaign, designed to mark the group’s comeback, transformed urban centers into what the band described as a shared global festival, blending digital art, drone choreography and large-scale media facades. In London, the South Bank became a focal point of the celebration. The London Eye glowed in vivid red, while nearby buildings displayed towering media facades featuring the group’s members holding traditional Korean lanterns alongside the logo of BTS' new album. Across the Atlantic, New York’s Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan skyline served as a backdrop for a coordinated drone show. Hundreds of drones moved in formation to spel

‘North or South?’ joke sparks backlash as comedian apologizes ahead of BTS’ US appearance

A joke made on a major U.S. talk show has triggered backlash just as BTS prepares for a high-profile American TV return — prompting a swift apology from a comedian caught at the center of the controversy. Seth Herzog, a resident comedian on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” came under fire after making an improvised remark during a Wednesday (local time) taping. While warming up the audience, Herzog asked, “Anyone here from the North?” — a line reportedly intended as a general question about audience origins. However, some attendees interpreted the comment as referencing North Korea in relation to BTS, sparking accusations of insensitivity and racial undertones. Audience members took to social media to share their discomfort, with several posts describing the remark as “offensive” and “inappropriate.” The backlash quickly gained traction online, amplified by BTS’ global fan base and the group’s ongoing promotional activities. According to U.S. outlet TMZ, Herzog later apologized directly to BTS as criticism mounted. The broadcaster is also said to have dis
