EJAE, Andrea Bocelli perform at World Cup opening ceremony

Singer-songwriter EJAE, who performed the hit song “Golden” from the popular animated film “KPop Demon Hunters,” joined renowned Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli in performing FIFA's official World Cup anthem, “DNA,” at the tournament's opening ceremony in Mexico City, Thursday (local time). Wearing a sleeveless blue gown with crossed halter straps, the Korean American singer drew attention from Korean audiences by singing a brief line in Korean: “Although I fall, I stand up again.” FIFA said “DNA” embodies the spirit of solidarity and unity for the historic tournament, which is being co-hosted for the first time by three countries — the United States, Canada and Mexico. The competition will be held across 16 cities and feature 48 teams until July 19.

YG to launch 5-member boy group in September

K-pop agency YG Entertainment's first boy group in six years will launch in September with five members, the company announced Thursday. YG had previously unveiled a plan to launch a new boy group this fall. "We're planning to introduce the male group in September for now. The number of its members, which many people may be curious about, is five," Yang Hyun-suk, founder and executive producer of YG Entertainment, said in a video posted on the company's official blog. He did not give further details of the new group, including its name. The last new boy group launched by YG was TREASURE, which debuted in August 2020. Yang added that the company would gradually reveal details about its upcoming intellectual properties and rookie artists, hinting at a broader debut lineup that includes a new girl group tentatively named Next Monster. YG also plans to roll out major projects this year, including new albums from Babymonster and TREASURE, as well as a world tour by BIGBANG marking its 20th anniversary.

New Korean school horror drama 'If Wishes Could Kill' tops Netflix rankings with fresh cast

Hyeong-wook, a high school student long hopeless at math, suddenly earns a perfect score on an exam. As his friends stare at him suspiciously, he smugly holds up his smartphone. “The secret is this wish-granting app. It’s called Girigo.” His friends scoff and leave. Moments later, a 24-hour timer lights up on Hyeong-wook’s phone. When the countdown finally reaches zero, he dies a horrific death in front of everyone. Released on Netflix last Friday, "If Wishes Could Kill" is an eight-episode series that follows five high school students as they struggle to break free from a mysterious app that predicts their deaths. Despite its R rating for violent content, strong word of mouth has helped the drama climb to No. 1 in Korea and No. 3 globally on FlixPatrol, a streaming analytics website, since its release. More striking than its rankings, however, is its cast. All five main characters are played by relative unknowns: Jeon So-young as Se-ah, Kang Mi-na as Na-ri, Baek Sun-ho as Geon-woo, Hyun Woo-seok as Ha-joon and Lee Hyo-je as Hyeong-wook. The casting choice was strongly pushed by di

Horror comedy 'Teaching Practice' tackles school issues with ghosts, humor

"Teaching Practice: Idiot Girls and School Ghost" is a horror comedy that combines supernatural elements with a message of encouragement for teachers, its director Kim Min-ha said Wednesday. "I want them to know there is a movie that cheers for them while they protect our schools, and I hope this story allows them to dream again,” the director said during a press conference in Seoul. The film is a high school horror comedy that follows Eun-gyung, a passionate student teacher played by Han Sun-hwa, who returns to her former high school. She and the girls of a mysterious dark magic club face a deadly mock exam against ghosts representing different academic subjects like mathematics and foreign languages. To protect her students from these supernatural forces, Eun-gyung leads the young club members in a fight for survival. The director explained that his motivation for the film came from seeing the struggles of teachers and the overwhelming growth of private academies. "I wanted to create a high school horror comedy because I was inspired by the 'Whispering Corridors' series made by my sen

HYBE posts $468 mil. in Q1 revenue on BTS' comeback

HYBE, the company behind K-pop megastar BTS, posted a sharp rise in first-quarter revenue on the back of the band's comeback, but swung to an operating loss due to a one-off accounting cost tied to stock-based compensation for employees. The company said in a regulatory filing Wednesday that its January-March revenue rose 39.5 percent year-on-year to 698.3 billion won ($468 million), marking a record high for a first quarter, which is typically a slow season for the music industry. Operating loss came to 196.6 billion won, compared with a profit of 21.6 billion won a year earlier, missing the market consensus of 42.6 billion-won profit compiled by Yonhap Infomax, the financial data service of Yonhap News Agency. Net loss stood at 156.7 billion won. HYBE said the loss reflected a 255 billion won one-off expense after Chairman Bang Si-hyuk, the company's largest shareholder, granted shares from his personal holdings as employee incentives. The firm said the cost did not involve an actual cash outflow. Excluding the one-off item, adjusted operating profit was 58.5 billion won. Revenue from a

ReviewHong Sang-soo captures actor's quiet day in ‘The Day She Returns’

The films of Hong Sang-soo often feel like a warm conversation with an old friend. His 34th feature, "The Day She Returns," is no different. While his work can sometimes feel complex or experimental, this latest project finds a peaceful rhythm in the everyday moments of a woman returning to her craft. The story follows actor Bae Jeong-su (Song Sun-mi). After a long break from acting following her marriage and subsequent divorce, Bae takes on a role in a small independent film. The movie captures the protagonist during a day of interviews at a German restaurant in Hanam, outskirt of Seoul, to promote her return. Shot in black and white, the film focuses on Bae as she gives three consecutive interviews with three young female journalists. Although the setting remains the same, the energy of each conversation shifts. The actor tries her best to answer every question with honesty, yet she carefully protects her private life when the reporters ask about her divorce or her young daughter waiting at home. As the interviews go on, the usual green soju bottles — a signature item in Hong’s wor

Kai’s ‘6-member’ comment on EXO sparks comeback doubts for CBX

A casual remark by Kai about EXO’s current lineup is stirring online debate, with fans questioning whether the trio CBX may be drifting further from a full-group return. The moment came during the Monday broadcast of SBS variety show “Uh, But Like, Seriously!,” where cast members jokingly expressed interest in appearing as guests at EXO’s upcoming world tour concerts. When host Lee Sang-min mentioned that Kai would begin EXO concerts in April, Kai confirmed plans for a world tour. As the cast playfully pushed for guest appearances, Kai shut it down, saying, “Don’t get your hopes up,” and added, “It’s a secret. The concert might even get canceled,” waving his hands dismissively. The banter continued, with Tak Jae-hoon jokingly asking for a favor, and Lee urging Kai to let them join. Kai replied cautiously, “I’ll say just one thing. I’m also entering contract renewal season soon,” prompting laughter and more teasing from the cast. But it was one seemingly simple exchange that drew the most attention. When Tak asked, “Kai, how many EXO members are there besides

The tour spans a total of 85 shows across 34 cities, making it the largest tour ever undertaken by a K-pop artist. After Tampa, the seven-member group will continue the tour on May 2–3 at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas, becoming the first Korean act to hold a concert at the venue. The North American leg involves 31 shows across 12 cities, including Mexico City, Stanford and Las Vegas, with all dates sold out, according to the agency.

ADOR lawyers quit before Danielle court date

Amid ongoing litigation in which entertainment agency ADOR has filed a damages lawsuit worth approximately 43 billion won ($29 million) against former NewJeans member Danielle and others, ADOR’s entire legal team has stepped down. Xportsnews confirmed on April 29 that five attorneys from Kim & Chang, who had been representing ADOR in the case, have all resigned. The resignations come less than a month after the first pretrial hearing, drawing speculation over possible reasons behind the move. With the legal team stepping down, HYBE must now appoint new legal representatives. Some speculate that the trial could be prolonged as a result. Meanwhile, Danielle’s legal representatives remain unchanged and will continue handling the case. Previously, during the first pretrial hearing held on March 26 at Seoul Central District Court, the two sides clashed over the pace of proceedings. At the time, Danielle’s side raised suspicions that ADOR was intentionally trying to delay the case, stating, “They recently requested to postpone the pretrial hearing by two months, which makes it seem like
