Megabox crisis raises concerns over future of Korean cinema

The financial crisis facing Megabox JoongAng is raising concern across Korea's film industry, with filmmakers and distributors warning that the problems extend far beyond a single theater chain. As one of the country's three major multiplex operators and a leading film investor through Plus M Entertainment, Megabox has become deeply embedded in the Korean movie business. Industry officials said any disruption to its operations could impact filmmaking and distribution at a time when the sector is already struggling to recover from the pandemic and the rise of streaming platforms. On June 12, Megabox JoongAng was among five affiliates of JoongAng Group that filed for corporate rehabilitation with the Seoul Bankruptcy Court. The move came days after JTBC, the group’s flagship broadcaster, declared a default on 20.6 billion won ($13.5 million) in debt repayments. While Megabox theaters continue to operate normally, the filing has sent shockwaves to the industry. For more than two decades, Megabox has stood alongside CGV and Lotte Cinema as one of Korea's three major multiplex chains. Throug

Tzuyang denies claims she is Chinese or backed by Chinese capital

YouTuber Tzuyang has pushed back against a wave of false online claims, rejecting rumors that she is Chinese or that Chinese backing is behind her channel’s 12.7 million subscribers. In an episode released Wednesday of comedian Park Na-rae’s YouTube show, the popular food channel creator discussed the spread of misinformation targeting public figures. Tzuyang, who recently testified at a National Assembly audit to call for stronger action against cyber defamation, said she had reached a breaking point. “Because my work depends on public interest, I thought I had to accept some criticism,” she said. “But as things crossed a line, I wondered whether I should really have to endure false accusations and being framed. That is when I decided to confront it.” She recalled being overwhelmed during her testimony. “I was so nervous that I don’t even remember what I said,” she said. “But the video was filled with comments saying I was pretending to be innocent. That hurt.” Asked by Park about the most absurd rumor she had seen, Tzuyang pointed to repeated claims that her channe

First K-pop-inspired Latin boy band SANTOS BRAVOS steps into global arena

If HYBE Labels' "multi-home, multi-genre" strategy has already begun reshaping pop through its U.S. and Japan branches with acts like KATSEYE and &TEAM, the company is now extending that blueprint to Latin America with its newest project, SANTOS BRAVOS. Formed through a televised reality series of the same name that aired from August to October, the five-member boy group — Drew, Alejandro, Kaue, Gaby and Kenneth — represents HYBE's most ambitious localization effort yet. The band's launch suggests the strategy is paying off: SANTOS BRAVOS debuted with a concert in Mexico, selling out every seat and positioning themselves as early global contenders. Its debut builds on the momentum of HYBE's overseas units. U.S.-based global girl group KATSEYE has surged to the forefront of pop, dominating international charts and securing two nominations at the upcoming 68th Grammy Awards, while Japan's &TEAM has climbed to million-seller status in both Korea and Japan. HYBE Latin America aims to carve out its own lane, pairing the region's rhythmic traditions with the performance-driven precision

Heo Sung-tae sheds villain image in action-comedy ‘The Informant’

Actor Heo Sung-tae, renowned for his chilling villainous roles, particularly in "Squid Game" Season 1, makes a dramatic and hilarious shift in his first leading film, "The Informant." The action-comedy centers on Oh Nam-hyuk (Heo), a burned-out cop dreaming of retirement. He seeks to pull off a final operation by utilizing Jo Tae-bong (Jo Bok-rae), his informant within a smuggling ring. When Tae-bong betrays Nam-hyuk and steals the cash, Nam-hyuk gets kidnapped. This forces both of them to work together on a dangerous case to survive. Heo’s performance is a major highlight of this film as he broke away from his signature heavy roles. The actor said he felt a natural connection to the character. "I didn't prepare much for the role of Oh Nam-hyuk," Heo said after the premiere at a theater in Seoul on Thursday. "I felt many similarities to the character and just thought about what I would do." "The Informant" successfully capitalizes on Heo’s transformation from a chilling villain to a comedic actor, proving his versatility. “I channeled Won Bin from 'The Man from Nowhere’ during act

Blue Dragon Film Awards highlight glimmers of hope amid industry slump

Despite Korea's ongoing box office slump, the 46th Blue Dragon Film Awards offered a blueprint for survival, proving that a mix of fresh webtoon adaptations and top-tier artistic talent can still captivate audiences. Held on Wednesday night, the Blue Dragon Film Awards are widely regarded as being among Korea’s most prestigious film honors. The clearest sign of a breakthrough came from Naver Webtoon's video subsidiary Studio N as the studio’s film "My Daughter is a Zombie" secured the Audience Choice Award for Most Popular Film, proving that powerful original content is showing a new direction for the industry's future. Based on the popular 2018 webtoon by Lee Yun-chang, the film has drawn 5.63 million viewers, becoming the most-watched film in 2025. The film was lauded as a well-balanced family movie that effectively used the original work's blend of dark comedy, family love and humanity. Studio N CEO Kwon Mi-kyung emphasized the forward-looking strategy behind the hit. "This award shows the power of our original stories. It proves we found the right balance between the webtoon's ima

Le Sserafim’s Sakura and Kazuha go viral after emotional Tokyo Dome encore

Le Sserafim members Sakura and Kazuha have opened up about the overwhelming emotions they experienced after performing at Tokyo Dome, one of Japan’s most symbolic venues. The group held encore concerts for the “Easy Crazy Hot” tour at the Dome on Nov. 18 and 19, just three years after their debut. Tokyo Dome is widely regarded in Japan as the benchmark of mainstream success and a stage most artists never reach. For Sakura and Kazuha, who were both born and raised in Japan, the achievement carried special personal meaning. Sakura, who previously performed at Tokyo Dome as a member of a Japanese girl group, said the moment felt surreal. “The last time I stood on this stage was 11 years ago,” she said. “Back then, I did not really understand what this venue meant. I remember just looking at my seniors’ backs. Now that I am standing here again 11 years later, so many emotions are coming back. I feel like I can finally understand how my seniors felt that day.” Reflecting on her 14-year career as an idol, Sakura said she often wondered what her life might have looked like had s

Global K-pop powerhouse ENHYPEN, in partnership with their agency Belift Lab, announced Thursday a donation of 100 million won ($68,200) to support flood relief efforts in the Philippines. “We became aware of the recent severe flooding affecting many communities across the Philippines, a country that has long been close to our hearts," ENHYPEN said through a press release. Belift Lab, a subsidiary of HYBE Labels, told The Korea Times that the donation will primarily be used for flood relief efforts across various communities in the northern Philippine province of Bulacan, one of the worst-hit areas during typhoon season. Bulacan also "holds a special place in the group's history," Belift Lab said. In March, ENHYPEN played one of their first major stadium concerts in Southeast Asia as part of their "WALK THE LINE" world tour at the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bulacan. The group is also one of the most popular bands in the Philippines, clinching ambassadorships for major local brands. "We wanted to offer our support, even in a small way, and sincerely hope the contributions will be used

Aespa drawn into China-Japan tensions as petition targets Ningning’s ‘Kohaku’ appearance

K-pop girl group aespa has been pulled into the deepening diplomatic dispute between China and Japan as a growing number of Japanese viewers are calling for the removal of Chinese member Ningning from NHK’s year-end music program, “Kohaku Uta Gassen.” A petition posted on Monday to Change.org is urging broadcaster NHK to cancel aespa’s scheduled appearance. The petition quickly gained momentum, surpassing 70,000 signatures within two days. Supporters argue that Ningning’s past social media post — where she shared a backstage photo featuring a decorative light that some critics said resembled a nuclear mushroom cloud — shows “a lack of historical awareness.” “‘Kohaku’ is an important national broadcast,” one commenter wrote, insisting that allowing her to perform would “hurt the victims of Hiroshima.” Another said, “Someone who praised a mushroom cloud-shaped light should not appear on a program watched by the whole country.” Ningning’s post from 2022 previously sparked criticism in Japan but did not lead to formal complaints. However, this year’s pet

Actors Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin shared the spotlight at the 46th Blue Dragon Film Awards on Wednesday, becoming the first married couple in the ceremony’s history to win the top acting prizes in the same year. The pair, who arrived together and sat side by side, drew the biggest attention of the night as they took home the best actor and best actress awards. The ceremony took place at KBS Hall in the financial district of Yeouido, Seoul, with actors Han Ji-min and Lee Je-hoon returning as co-hosts. This year’s awards underscored the challenges facing the Korean film industry, which has seen a decline in new releases, but the show still delivered memorable moments and a strong slate of honorees. The film “No Other Choice,” which led the way with nominations in 12 categories, emerged as the night’s biggest winner with seven awards, including best film, best director, best actress, best supporting actor, best music and the popular star awards. The movie follows Man-soo (Lee Byung-hun), a paper factory manager whose comfortable life collapses when he is suddenly fired. Forced to pr

Actor Yun Chae-kyung, badminton star Lee Yong-dae swept up in dating rumor

Actor Yun Chae-kyung, formerly of girl group April, has been caught up in a dating rumor with former national badminton player Lee Yong-dae, drawing attention over their 8-year age gap and Lee’s status as a single father following a past divorce. PA Entertainment, Yun’s agency, said Wednesday that it was “difficult to confirm” the report, saying it was related to the actor’s private life. Earlier that day, media outlets reported that Yun and Lee had been dating for roughly a year, introducing each other as partners to close acquaintances and maintaining a serious relationship despite their age difference. The rumor quickly drew public interest as it involved the pairing of a celebrated sports figure and a former girl group idol. Lee married actress Byun Soo-mi in 2017 after six years of dating but divorced the following year. Lee, who has custody of their daughter, has openly been raising her as a single father. With Yun’s agency declining to offer a clear response, observers noted that the spotlight may be placing pressure on both sides. Yun debuted in 2012 as a member of Pure
