Recognition or sidelining? Reactions mixed as Grammys unveil Asian pop category

The Grammy Awards will add a Best Asian Pop Music Performance category, a move read as recognition of Asian music's global reach after years of criticism that the show favored English-language acts and lagged behind the times. The Recording Academy, which runs the Grammys, announced the rule change on its website Tuesday (local time). The new category takes effect at the 69th Grammy Awards next year, alongside four others — Best Latin Song, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance and Best Traditional Folk Album. For Korea, the Asian pop category was the most welcome news of the bunch. BTS and other K-pop acts have topped Billboard's main chart and sold out world tours for years, yet the Grammys remained the one stage they could not crack. Because Grammy wins were especially hard to come by, some saw the change as a milestone cracked open by years of persistent knocking from K-pop music. "Now that there is finally a category where K-pop artists can be officially recognized, it opens the door for far more artists to enter the conversation t

Wedding bells ring for second-generation K-pop girl group idols

Two of K-pop’s most enduring second-generation girl groups are on the brink of a milestone many fans once thought distant: the arrival of their first married members. Apink’s Yoon Bomi and singer-producer Rado are set to marry in May next year, making Yoon the first married member of her girl group. The announcement, made directly to fans, was quickly amplified as similar news surfaced involving Girls’ Generation’s Tiffany. On Dec. 18, Bomi shared the wedding news through a handwritten letter posted on Apink’s official fan cafe. In the letter, she reflected on her life journey and her decision to marry. “After my teens and twenties, I’ve now become 33-year-old Yoon Bomi, and I decided to spend my future with someone who has shared everyday life with me for a long time, through joyful moments and moments of uncertainty,” she said. “Just as I always have, I will continue to live responsibly and become even stronger.” Both Bomi and Rado’s agencies released a joint statement the same day, asking fans for warm support and saying the couple would remain active in their re

BTS eyes 2026 comeback amid fan backlash

Six months after all members of the K-pop juggernaut BTS completed their long-awaited military discharge, the return of the genre's most influential group remains defined as much by uncertainty as anticipation. The seven-member act is widely expected to make a full-group comeback in spring 2026, but the period following its military hiatus has been marked by a series of personal controversies and public scrutiny. Together, they have exposed fault lines within the fandom over privacy, accountability and the pressures facing a group whose every move carries global weight. BTS' military hiatus officially ended June 21, when the group's rapper Suga completed his alternative service. The moment ended a two-and-a-half-year pause that many fans believed would clear the way for a straightforward return. With all members discharged, expectations were high that the group would smoothly transition into its next chapter. Instead, the months that followed have been turbulent. In August, optimism briefly resurfaced when all seven members appeared together in Los Angeles during a Weverse live broadcast

Choi Ji-woo returns with indie film about family battling diabetes

Actor Choi Ji-woo makes her return to the big screen after three years with an independent film based on the true story of a family navigating life after their son is diagnosed with diabetes. "I was cautious because I had to portray a real-life figure," Choi said during a press conference Thursday for the upcoming film "Sugar." A mother of a young daughter herself, the actress said she could immerse herself in the role more easily than she would have before experiencing motherhood. "I tried not to appear too emotional on screen and actually had to hold back my feelings throughout the performance," the "Winter Sonata" star said. She explained her character, Mi-ra, as a mother who bravely accepts a new reality: Her 12-year-old son, active in his school's baseball club, is suddenly diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes — a chronic autoimmune disorder that stops the body from producing insulin to regulate blood sugar. Mi-ra, an engineer, secures a device from overseas that can measure blood sugar without drawing blood, sparing young patients from painful finger pricks required multiple times throu

'Culinary Class Wars’ producers focus on cooking amid judge controversy in Season 2

“Culinary Class Wars,” Netflix’s hit cooking competition, returned Tuesday, with its producers stressing that the new run remains centered on the pure intensity of cooking, despite ongoing scrutiny surrounding star judge Paik Jong-won. “We put a lot of thought into how to prepare for Season 2, especially given the immense love the first season received,” producer Kim Hak-min said during a press conference in Seoul Wednesday. “We concluded that changing for the sake of change could be poisonous. Instead, we focused on maintaining the elements people loved while refining the flaws to create a more polished program. In a way, staying true to the original essence was a harder path than total transformation.” Kim Eun-ji, another producer, said the positive response to the show’s debut season gave the team courage to invite culinary legends who once seemed out of reach. “The courage we gained from Season 1 allowed us to approach masters like Ven. Seonjae and chef Hou Deok-juk. We were worried it might be an impolite request, but their swift acceptance shocked us. When the 100

SHINee’s Key breaks silence over illegal medical treatment controversy

SHINee’s Key has spoken out after becoming embroiled in controversy over alleged illegal medical procedures linked to a woman known as the ‘injection aunt,’ who is accused of practicing medicine without a license. He said he received treatment believing she was a licensed doctor and expressed deep regret over his ignorance. SM Entertainment, Key’s agency, released an official statement on Wednesday addressing the allegations involving the woman, identified only as Lee. The agency apologized for the delay in responding. “Due to the need to communicate with various parties related to overseas tour schedules and activities, it was difficult to issue a prompt statement, and we sincerely apologize for that.” According to SM, Key was first introduced to Lee through an acquaintance and met her at a hospital in Seoul’s Gangnam District, believing her to be a doctor. “Key continued to receive treatment at the hospital, and in recent situations where visiting the hospital was difficult, he received treatment at home on several occasions,” the agency said, acknowledging that Key

BTS is no longer hiding its impatience — and fans are taking notice. On Dec. 16, all seven members of BTS went live together on the fan community platform Weverse, where they spoke candidly about their growing thirst for a full-group comeback following their military hiatus. “We practice together, and in the evenings we gather and just chat,” Jimin said, offering a glimpse into the group’s current routine. RM voiced what many fans have been feeling. “I want to come back so badly I feel like I’m going crazy,” he said, before adding pointedly, “When is the company announcing it? I’m losing my mind. HYBE, please announce it already.” Jimin agreed that the wait felt unusually long, saying, “Time feels slower than we expected, so it’s frustrating.” Jungkook added a dose of realism, saying, “We’re not even ten percent ready yet,” while Suga reassured fans by saying the comeback would be announced “in the near future.” RM then hinted at ongoing preparations, saying, “Don’t we have another meeting tomorrow?” fueling speculation that an official announceme
