Lee Jae-myung outlines vision for 'basic society'
Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), outlined his policy vision for a "basic society," Thursday, pledging to move Korea toward a system in which the state guarantees a basic standard of living for all people. "A basic society is not limited to fragmented welfare or income redistribution," Lee wrote on Facebook. "It seeks to lay the foundation for sustainable growth by providing real, comprehensive guarantees in housing, health care, caregiving, education and public services." Basic income — the provision of regular, unconditional payments to all individuals — has long been one of Lee’s signature policies. While his latest pledge did not reference the concept directly, the DPK explained that the idea has since been broadened and integrated into a more comprehensive framework.
