Hyosung launches hyperscale AI data center in Seoul

Hyosung Group is expanding its push into artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure with the launch of a hyperscale data center in Seoul, marking its entry into Korea’s fast-growing data center market. The company announced Wednesday that Hyosung-STT GDC, a joint venture between Hyosung Heavy Industries and Singapore-based operator ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), opened STT Seoul 1, a 30-megawatt data center, in Geumcheon District, Seoul, the previous day. Designed to support cloud and AI workloads, the new facility combines Hyosung’s power infrastructure expertise with STT GDC's global standards in data center design, operation and service management. The facility is capable of accommodating increasingly power-intensive and high-density computing environments driven by generative AI applications. The company explained that one of the center's biggest advantages is its location in Seoul, where securing large-scale power capacity has become increasingly difficult due to energy regulations and grid constraints, providing low-latency connectivity to major business districts

Jollibee Foods, the leading fast food chain operator of the Philippines, said Monday it has acquired a 100 percent stake in All Day Fresh, the operator of South Korean hot pot chain Shabu All Day. With the completion of the share purchase agreement worth about 130 billion won ($88.6 million), All Day Fresh has separated from its former parent company Myungryundang and fully incorporated into the Philippine food conglomerate. All Day Fresh operates 172 Shabu All Day stores in South Korea, generating annual sales of around 480 billion won, according to the company. Jollibee Foods said the brand maintains a leading position in the South Korean market for all-you-can-eat hot pot, commonly referred to as shabu shabu, adding it sees strong growth potential amid rising overseas interest in Korean food. The company is also considering expanding Shabu All Day into Southeast Asian markets. The acquisition follows Jollibee Foods' purchase of Compose Coffee, a South Korean coffee chain, last year, further strengthening its presence in South Korea's food and beverage market. Samsung's Taylor plant to begin operations, with Tesla chips ready for fabrication

Samsung Electronics will soon begin operations at its foundry fab in Taylor, Texas, with preparations underway to churn out artificial intelligence (AI) chips for Tesla by using its 2-nanometer process. According to industry officials Sunday, Samsung Electronics will hold an equipment installation ceremony for the Taylor site on Friday. Samsung Electronics’ Foundry Business President Han Jin-man and other key officials from the semiconductor supply chain will attend the ceremony. To expand its foundry capacity in the U.S., Samsung Electronics broke ground on its Taylor fab in November 2022 with an initial $17 billion investment. The facility was initially scheduled to begin operations in October 2024, but the timeline was delayed due to setbacks in securing orders. The fab’s preparations picked up speed after Samsung Electronics last July clinched a $16.5 billion order from Tesla to fabricate its AI5 and AI6 chips for self-driving systems. Since then, the chipmaker has been deploying workers in charge of advanced process technologies to the Taylor fab, and recently expanded deployme

Iran arrests 2 foreigners over Starlink device imports

TEHRAN — Iranian authorities have arrested two foreign nationals in the country's northwest on charges related to the importation of Starlink devices, a local prosecutor said Sunday, according to Iranian media. The suspects, arrested in the city of Jolfa in East Azerbaijan province, were involved in "importing satellite internet equipment" and were arrested by security forces, Iran's Tasnim news agency quoted the city's public prosecutor as saying. It said the two were part of "a network accused of intelligence cooperation with groups linked to the United States and Israel." Two Iranian nationals were also arrested in connection with the case, including one who "attempted to send information to hostile satellite networks" and another allegedly involved in intelligence activities, it added. Iran has been largely cut off from the global internet since the start of the war with Israel and the United States on Feb. 28. Satellite internet services such as Starlink are officially banned in the country.

Should SK hynix share record bonuses with public? Outlandish claim sparks uproar

Online debate is spreading over SK hynix’s hefty employee bonuses, which are expected to reach around 700 million won ($477,000) per person based on a simple calculation, with some even calling for the payouts to be shared among the public. Such claims, which many deem to be far-fetched, have been circulating online as Korea’s two memory chip giants — SK hynix and Samsung Electronics — head toward record earnings this year on the back of a global chip supercycle. The debate has gained traction on Blind, an anonymous workplace forum. A series of recent posts argue that the outsized gains of large conglomerates, many of which benefited from state support, should be shared more broadly with the public. In one post, a user identifying as a civil servant wrote, “SK hynix once struggled and was revived with taxpayer money via the Korea Development Bank. If that’s the case, shouldn’t its bonuses be shared with the public as well?” The comment referred to low-interest loans extended by the state-run bank during industry downturns in 2023. Another commenter, identified as an employ

2026 LG Awards spotlight customer-centric innovation in AI, bio

LG Group said Sunday it held its annual LG Awards on Thursday, awarding top prizes to four projects credited with driving major contract wins, revenue gains and manufacturing efficiencies across artificial intelligence (AI), bio and clean tech. Marking its eighth year, the group‑wide award recognizes projects that turn customer‑centric innovation into measurable business results, honoring 4,700 awardees and 583 best‑practice cases since 2019. This year’s award ceremony, held at LG Inhwawon in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, recognized 730 employees, with a focus on initiatives that enhanced the overall customer experience through differentiated value and market‑beating innovation. “The remark from the awards’ customer juror that ‘LG is life itself’ captures the very reason for LG’s existence,” Koo Kwang-mo, chairman of the group, said in a speech. “The value we should create is not technology, products or services themselves, but a better life for our customers. If we stay focused on that single goal, we can offer customers a better tomorrow than today.” Among 217 sub

Baedal Minjok develops AI feature describing food for visually challenged

Baedal Minjok, the largest food-ordering online platform here, has developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) technology providing more detailed audio description of foods for those with visual impairments. Woowa Brothers, operator of the platform, said Sunday it has completed tests of the AI-based description technology among a group of visually impaired users. The company teamed up with AI-based image startup Connect Brick to develop the function which verbally describes details such as the doneness and ingredients of dishes shown in menu images. The technology works by having AI analyze images and vividly describe their color, level of doneness, visual appearance of main ingredients and delivering these descriptions as spoken audio. The technology, for example, can provide a detailed description of a half-and-half pizza: “Golden brown dough is topped with pepperoni on one side, which looks as if it’s holding in rich juices, while on the other side, corn, ham, cheese and sauces are generously layered together.” The AI audio function has advanced from a screen-reader feature tha

Hyundai Elevator commercializes world's 1st modular elevator for high-rise building

Hyundai Elevator has become the world’s first company to commercialize a modular elevator method, installing elevators in a high-rise residential building and launching its proprietary brand, ENOBLOC. The company said Sunday it successfully completed on-site verification and quality control testing for ENOBLOC at an apartment complex in Songdo, Incheon. The installation covers a 27-story residential building, making it the first commercial use of a modular elevator system for high-rise apartments above 20 floors. ENOBLOC is a new approach that preassembles elevator components in modular units off site and installs them on site, delivering safety, efficiency, quality and environmental performance at the same time. “ENOBLOC is a breakthrough solution that reduces risk, inefficiency and environmental impact, fundamentally reshaping how construction and development projects are carried out,” Hyundai Elevator CEO Cho Jae-cheon said. “We aim to go beyond being the world’s first and establish K-elevators as a global standard.” Elevator installations for high-rise construction requir

Hana Financial backs artists with developmental disabilities to promote independence

Hana Financial Group honored artists with developmental disabilities at its annual Hana Artverse awards as part of efforts to support their social participation and financial independence, the company said Sunday. The awards ceremony took place Friday at Hana Bank's headquarters in Seoul. Launched in 2022 as an inclusive arts competition, Hana Artverse is part of the group’s social contribution initiatives aimed at improving awareness of disabilities and promoting a more inclusive culture. This year’s edition drew a record 1,255 participants, with 30 winners ultimately recognized. Among them is Park Chan-ho, who took the grand prize in the adult category. Drawing on his musical background, his painting translates sound into a visual motion. Layers of repeated lines, symbols and instrument-like forms rhythmically hum across the canvas. In the youth division, top honors went to Choi Yu-jin, who reimagined a red horse — an emblem of 2026 — with a bold, pop-art sensibility. The winning pieces will remain on display at the bank's headquarters through April 24, before moving to H.art1, t
