Weak won, K-beauty fuel Chinese shopping trips, spending in Korea

When Chelsea Wang travelled to Seoul with two friends in late April, they barely visited any of the city's palaces or tourist attractions. Instead, their three-and-a-half-day itinerary revolved around duty-free shopping, beauty treatments, hair salons and cosmetics stores. Wang arrived with a shopping list of her own: a backpack she estimated would cost at least 500 yuan ($70) less than in China, and a bottle of perfume at a similar discount. One of her friends, Wu, a 28-year-old white-collar worker from China who was preparing for marriage, had an even bigger purchase planned. After comparing prices, she bought a Chaumet wedding ring at Lotte Duty Free in Seoul's Myeong-dong neighborhood for about 37,000 yuan after discounts, tax refunds and favourable exchange rates were figured in — roughly 11,000 yuan less than she would have paid in China. "It was really quite a good deal," Wu said. Their purchases came as the Korean won has remained weak against major currencies over the past year. One yuan was worth an average of about 226 won in June, compared with around 209 won in January, acc

MBK chairman says no more personal contributions for Homeplus rescue

Michael ByungJu Kim, chairman of MBK Partners — the private equity firm that owns Homeplus — has said he will refuse to comply with calls for a personal contribution of more than 1 trillion won ($724 million) to support the retailer, which is under a court-led rehabilitation process, according to sources in political circles and the financial investment industry, Thursday. During a closed-door meeting with lawmakers from the National Assembly's National Policy Committee on June 13, Kim maintained that MBK's plan to forfeit its entire 2.5 trillion won stake in Homeplus to facilitate the sale represents the best possible offer, sources said. However, as some critics continue to argue that an immediate capital injection is essential to swiftly normalize the retailer's operations, further controversy is expected. Homeplus ranks as Korea's second-largest discount retail chain, with a network of 126 large-scale stores and 308 smaller outlets nationwide. It has a workforce of around 19,000 employees. In 2015, MBK acquired Homeplus from British retailer Tesco for 7.2 trillion won. After acco

Hyundai Motor Group teams up with land ministry for connected digital tachograph

Hyundai Motor and Kia have signed a partnership with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and a transportation safety authority to jointly develop a next-generation connected digital tachograph (DTG) technology, the carmakers said Thursday. Under the partnership, the two auto brands under Hyundai Motor Group aim to improve convenience for commercial vehicle customers and promote a culture of enhanced road safety by leveraging their advanced connected car technologies, they said. The new connected DTG system will integrate the two carmakers’ connected vehicle services with the Korea Transportation Safety Authority (KTSA)’s electronic tachograph analysis system (eTAS). The DTG is an electronic device that automatically records driving information, such as speed, mileage and GPS signals, in real-time. Under Korea’s road traffic act, buses, freight trucks and school vehicles are required to install DTGs and submit driving records. The KTSA analyzes the submitted data to identify risky driving behavior and prevent traffic accidents. However, commercial vehicle operators mu

SPC launches internal watchdog following employee's fatal accident

Korean major food conglomerate SPC Group announced on Thursday the launch of an internal watchdog group to enhance self-monitoring and ensure its business operations comply with the country’s legal regulations. The SPC Compliance Committee consists of four legal experts from outside the company and one internal management leader. Kim Ji-hyung, a legal adviser at Seoul-based law firm Jipyong, heads the committee. The other external members include a lawyer from Jipyong, a professor from Chung-Ang University’s School of Economics and the head of the ISO Committee on Consumer Policy. Kyung Jae-hyung, CEO of Paris Croissant, SPC’s dessert cafe subsidiary, serves as the committee’s sole internal member. SPC launched the committee after police investigators and inspectors from the country’s labor ministry on Tuesday raided SPC Samlip, a confectionery unit under the conglomerate, and its factory in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, in connection with a fatal accident that killed a factory worker last month. The authorities booked seven factory officials on charges of occupational negligence

Shipping industry alarmed by Middle East conflict

Fears are mounting in the Korean shipping industry over potential damage to vessels and crews passing through the Strait of Hormuz, as Iran has threatened to block the vital oil trade route in retaliation for Israel's ongoing air raids that began last Friday. While sailors are calling for ships to detour around the strait, the government is closely monitoring the safety of Korean vessels and the economic impact of the Middle East conflict. The Federation of Korean Seafarers' Unions issued a statement Thursday urging all Korean ships to bypass the Strait of Hormuz or, at the very least, guarantee sailors the right to disembark from vessels that must pass through the dangerous area. The federation also shared what it claimed were photos of missiles fired near a Korean ship traversing the strait, emphasizing that risks are increasing due to Iranian jamming, which has disrupted vessels' global positioning systems. "The anxiety of seafarers and their families is at its peak," a federation official said. On the same day, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced that relevant ministries ha

SK Telecom set to complete USIM replacement after massive cyberattack

SK Telecom, Korea's leading mobile carrier, said Thursday it has nearly completed replacing universal subscriber identity module (USIM) chips for its entire user base of 25 million, about two months after it said sensitive USIM data may have been leaked due to an unidentified cyberattack on its servers. "USIM replacement will be completed today in general," an SK Telecom official said. The official, however, remained cautious about fully resuming new subscription services, which have been suspended for about a month under government orders. SK Telecom began offering free USIM card replacements in late April to all of its subscribers, including 2 million budget phone users, to prevent potential identity theft or financial fraud following the data breach. The Korean government ordered the company to suspend new subscriptions until the USIM replacements were finalized. As the replacement process nears completion, SK Telecom resumed new subscription services, limited to embedded SIMs (eSIMs), Monday. According to interim findings released last month by a government-led investigation team, the
