Termination of Homeplus rehabilitation endangers 12,000 workers

A court decision on Friday to terminate the rehabilitation proceedings for cash-strapped discount store chain Homeplus has raised concerns for the company's 12,000 employees who could lose their jobs. After Homeplus first filed for rehabilitation in March last year, the retailer began reducing its offline outlets. Of the 126 locations, only 67 stores remain, while the number of employees dropped from 20,000 to about 15,000 following the downsizing. After the company sold its supermarket unit Homeplus Express to NS Shopping last month to secure more cash, the workforce dropped again to 12,000 people. If Homeplus ultimately goes into bankruptcy, the government will activate a substitute payment program, which would allow it to advance unpaid wages of up to 21 million won ($13,600) per employee and later recover the funds. Employees who lose their jobs would also be eligible for unemployment benefits equivalent to 60 percent of their average wages over the three months preceding their termination. The government also plans to provide at least 440 billion won in emergency liquidity to help sm

HYBE chairman referred to prosecution over alleged unfair trading

Financial authorities referred Bang Si-hyuk, chairman and founder of K-pop powerhouse HYBE, to the prosecution over alleged fraudulent securities transactions related to the company's listing, officials said, Wednesday. The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) under the Financial Services Commission (FSC) decided to forward the complaint against Bang and three former HYBE officials for their alleged violation of the Capital Markets Act regarding the company's initial public offering (IPO). Bang is accused of misleading investors, including venture capital firms, in 2019 into believing that HYBE's IPO would be delayed and inducing them to sell their shares to a special purpose company (SPC) established by a private equity fund created and funded by HYBE executives. Investors sold their shares to the SPC, but financial authorities determined that HYBE was, at the time, already in the process of preparing for its listing. After the company went public, the SPC sold its shares, and Bang reportedly received 30 percent of the profit from the share sale in accordance with a prior shareholder

KCCI launches summer forum with focus on upcoming APEC summit

GYEONGJU, North Gyeongsang Province — The Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) kicked off its annual Summer Forum, Wednesday, at the venue for the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in October and November. Departing from its usual location on Jeju Island, the nation’s largest business lobby group chose Gyeongju this year to highlight the significance of the APEC summit, which Korea hopes will draw leaders including U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The four-day forum has drawn more than 500 top business leaders. Alongside the leaders’ meeting, the APEC CEO Summit will also be held, an event that will be a “global showcase of the strength and potential of the Korean economy,” according to KCCI Chairman Chey Tae-won. The KCCI is the official host of the APEC CEO Summit, scheduled for Oct. 28. “The APEC CEO Summit is the largest business event in the Asia-Pacific region, bringing together leaders from 21 member economies — representing 60 percent of global GDP — and over 1,700 global CEOs,” Chey said in his openin

Farmers protest potential reduction of barriers to US agricultural imports

Farmers here are vehemently protesting the government’s ongoing negotiations with the United States over tariffs, as the nation’s top negotiator hinted at reducing barriers to agricultural imports. While the trade ministry sees the agricultural sector issue as part of its strategies for the overall tariff talks, farmers’ groups, as well as the agricultural ministry and some ruling lawmakers, claim the sector should not be sacrificed for the sake of other sectors, like manufacturing. The Korean Successor Advanced Farmers Federation (KAFF), a group of young farmers, said they would take collective action if the country seeks to expand imports of U.S. agricultural products. “We will not overlook if the government removes tariff and nontariff barriers on agricultural and livestock products without we farmers’ consent,” the group said during a rally near the presidential office in Yongsan District, central Seoul, Wednesday. Their protest was in response to Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo’s Monday remarks that “the agricultural sector is what we need to make strategic decisions on

Elecs Vietnam 2025 kicks off with fanfare

HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam — The Elecs Vietnam 2025 exhibition kicked off Wednesday with a group of Korea’s top-tier electric equipment makers in attendance to make deeper inroads into not just Vietnam, but the entire Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region. The event runs for three days in Ho Chi Minh City, the southern commercial hub of Vietnam. Koo Ja-kyun, chairman of the Korea Electrical Manufacturers Association (KOEMA), delivered an opening speech and underscored the ever-growing strategic energy partnership between Korea and Vietnam. “The power industry is now entering a new era of what we call an ‘ultra-super-cycle’ — marked by the expansion of carbon-free power generation, the proliferation of data centers and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies,” Koo said. He also serves as CEO and chairman for LS Electric, one of Korea’s leading electric equipment manufacturers. “The active participation in the industry from both the Vietnamese government and private sectors is highly appreciated,” Koo said. “We expect t

Taihan Cable to invest $358 mil. won in cable plant

Taihan Cable & Solution, Korea's second-largest cable company, said Wednesday it will invest 497.2 billion won ($358 million) in a submarine cable plant to meet rising global demand. The company will begin first-stage construction of its No. 2 submarine cable plant in Dangjin, about 80 kilometers south of Seoul, later this year, with operations slated to start in 2027, it said in a press release. "The first-stage investment is aimed at meeting rising global demand for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable systems," it said. HVDC is more economical than conventional alternating current for transmitting large amounts of power over long distances, as it generally has lower losses than typical transmission systems. The first-stage investment is part of the company's plan to build a 1 trillion-won submarine cable plant in Dangjin, with further funding to follow for expanding the No. 2 plant, it said. Taihan Cable currently operates the No. 1 submarine cable plant in Dangjin, as well as an underground power cable plant and a cable solutions plant. The global submarine HVDC cable market is exp

Lotte leaders hold secret meeting in search of ways to salvage chemical biz

Lotte Group’s regular executive gathering, called the Value Creation Meeting (VCM), began its second-half edition Wednesday in an unusual format, stretching to two days for the first time since the retail-to-petrochemical conglomerate launched the biannual event. Unlike previous editions, the meeting was held behind closed doors at the group’s employee training center in Osan, Gyeonggi Province, instead of the usual venue, a company-owned hotel in Seoul where reporters can typically get comments from CEOs. The secretive setting is seen as a reflection of the group’s concerns over a slowdown across key business areas, particularly petrochemicals. Roughly 80 top leaders, including Chairman Shin Dong-bin and his son Shin Yoo-yeol, the vice president overseeing future growth, arrived at Lotte Academy Osan Campus Wednesday morning. Reporters were barred from interviews and denied entry. Lotte typically holds VCMs twice a year, in January and July, and previous meetings lasted half a day at Lotte World Tower in southeastern Seoul. This year’s agenda remained confidential, but industry

Political issues put Korea's online platform giants in trouble

Korea's two leading online platform operators have recently found themselves embroiled in political controversies. While former Naver executives being appointed to key government positions has intensified suspicions about the company's relationship with President Lee Jae Myung, Kakao is facing allegations that one of its affiliates bribed the closest aide to former first lady Kim Keon Hee to bypass sanctions imposed under the previous administration of President Yoon Suk Yeol. At a parliamentary confirmation hearing Tuesday, the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) pressed SMEs and Startups Minister nominee Han Seong-sook on whether she was involved in Naver's 4 billion won ($2.9 million) donation to Seongnam FC in 2015, while Lee was the city's mayor. In 2018, Lee was accused of giving special favors to Naver and other companies in return for their donations to the city-owned football club. "I was not really aware of that matter at the time, as I was serving as Naver’s services director then," said Han, who became the tech company's CEO in 2017. The ruling Democratic Party of Kore

Electronic parts makers eye new growth drivers

Korea’s leading electronic parts makers, LG Innotek and Samsung Electro-Mechanics, each suggested new growth drivers as part of efforts to diversify their portfolios beyond smartphone-related businesses. During a presentation to reporters Tuesday, LG Innotek said it aims to post 1.5 trillion won ($1.08 billion) in sales from its vehicle connectivity parts business by 2030, by pre-occupying the digital key solution market. “The digital key solution enables various in-vehicle features to be accessed via a smartphone,” LG Innotek Automotive Components Business Unit Senior Vice President Yoo Byaeng-kuk said. “The current market remains at around 600 billion won, but it is expected to grow to about 3.3 trillion won by 2030. We are actively pursuing a range of initiatives to become the global No.1 in this field, not only with Korean automakers but also through active discussions on new business with European carmakers.” LG Innotek launched its first digital key module in 2019 based on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology, and later released its digital key solution 2.0, which added

POSCO breaks Europe's monopoly in HIC-resistant steel supply to Aramco

POSCO will provide Saudi Aramco with steel resistant to hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) to assist the world’s largest oil producer in increasing the Fadhili Gas Plant’s processing capacity by 60 percent. This is the first time a non-European steelmaker will supply Aramco with the specialty material needed for plant construction. HIC-resistant steel is primarily used in pressure vessels and pipes handling oil and gas under harsh conditions. Requirements for the HIC-resistant steel used at Aramco’s plants exceed international standards, so European mills had been exclusive suppliers until POSCO’s recent deal. Worldwide, only nine steelmakers currently meet Aramco’s strict standards. POSCO noted that the latest supply deal will strengthen its foothold in the high-value-added material market. The steelmaker added that its collaboration with Aramco enabled the Saudi oil giant to select Korean firms for the production of pressure vessels and pipes for the project, which expands the capacity of the existing Fadhili Gas Plant located 350 kilometers northeast of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s
