Termination of Homeplus rehabilitation endangers 12,000 workers

A court decision on Friday to terminate the rehabilitation proceedings for cash-strapped discount store chain Homeplus has raised concerns for the company's 12,000 employees who could lose their jobs. After Homeplus first filed for rehabilitation in March last year, the retailer began reducing its offline outlets. Of the 126 locations, only 67 stores remain, while the number of employees dropped from 20,000 to about 15,000 following the downsizing. After the company sold its supermarket unit Homeplus Express to NS Shopping last month to secure more cash, the workforce dropped again to 12,000 people. If Homeplus ultimately goes into bankruptcy, the government will activate a substitute payment program, which would allow it to advance unpaid wages of up to 21 million won ($13,600) per employee and later recover the funds. Employees who lose their jobs would also be eligible for unemployment benefits equivalent to 60 percent of their average wages over the three months preceding their termination. The government also plans to provide at least 440 billion won in emergency liquidity to help sm

Korea, US to continue trade talks Friday as no deal reached after 80-minute meeting

The Korean minister of industry and the United States secretary of commerce will hold another meeting in Washington on Friday (local time), as trade negotiations a day earlier ended without any tangible outcome, leaving the two countries' tariff agreement unresolved ahead of the Aug. 1 deadline. Sensitive matters, including an increase in Korean imports of U.S. agricultural products, are now on the table as Seoul makes a final push to cut Washington's forthcoming "reciprocal" duties and item-specific tariffs already imposed on cars and steel. However, the Donald Trump administration continues to demand greater investment in the U.S. and reduced trade barriers. Presidential Chief of Staff for Policy Kim Yong-beom said Friday that Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan and Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo will remain in Washington to continue talks with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. “They agreed to hold another meeting in the U.S. on Friday,” Kim told reporters after an emergency meeting of top economic and security officials to discuss trad

Jeju Air, Korea's leading low-cost carrier, said Friday it has launched a new route to Singapore as part of efforts to strengthen its service network in the Asian market. The budget carrier began operating daily flights on the Incheon-Singapore route starting Thursday, the company said in a press release. Jeju Air already operates a Singapore route departing from Busan, Korea's largest port city, located some 330 kilometers southeast of Seoul. "The expansion is aimed at meeting travel demand not only to Singapore, a major financial hub and popular resort destination, but also to Indonesia's Batam Island, which is accessible by a one-hour ferry ride," the company said. Jeju Air currently operates six domestic routes and about 70 international routes with a fleet of 38 Boeing 737-800NG and six Boeing 737-8 aircraft.

Antitrust watchdog in policy limbo as gov’t delays leadership reshuffle

The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) remains in limbo in its future policy direction, as the government continues to delay the nomination of its new chief. The delayed leadership reshuffle makes it harder for the antitrust watchdog to handle a series of pending issues, such as the regulation of U.S. tech firms, at a critical time when Korea and the United States are engaged in high-stakes trade talks. Even though President Lee Jae Myung took office in early June, there has been no signs of a leadership change at the FTC. This stands in contrast with other economy-related authorities — most of which have already completed the personnel appointments in line with the Lee administration’s policy agenda. By comparison, under the former Moon Jae-in administration, it took only a week to nominate an FTC chairman following Moon's inauguration in 2017. At that time, the FTC wielded strong influence across the local business landscape, as the authority played a key role in conglomerate reform in tandem with the former Moon administration. The current situation raises concerns over whether the FTC wil

Korean card firms scramble to maintain footing amid won-based stablecoin push

The credit card industry is forming a joint task force and taking other measures in response to a perceived threat to its position in the payments market amid growing discussions of the introduction of won-based stablecoins and related legislation, industry officials said Thursday. Stablecoins are digital currencies designed to maintain a stable value by being tied to central bank-issued currencies, such as the U.S. dollar, or to physical assets like gold. As the promotion of won-based stablecoins was one of President Lee Jae Myung's campaign pledges, a related subcommittee has been established within the presidential state affairs committee. The ruling Democratic Party of Korea is also set to announce a bill on the issuance and operation of won-based stablecoins. According to financial industry officials, the Credit Finance Association and eight major credit card companies plan to form a task force on stablecoins and hold its inaugural meeting next week. The task force is expected to explore how the card industry should navigate the potential legalization of stablecoins and what role co

Hanwha Galleria open to selling Five Guys

Hanwha Galleria, a major player in the food and retail sector, said Thursday it is open to selling the operating rights of its premium burger brand, Five Guys. However, the Hanwha Group subsidiary dismissed rumors that the potential sale is due to poor performance in Korea, saying the brand has actually exceeded expectations and recorded globally outstanding sales. Hanwha Galleria said that while it has hosted the brand in the fast food market here since its launch in 2023 and can be assured of continuing the business, it wanted to “approach the brand from an opposite point of view” and came up with the option to sell it. “Five Guys has maintained strong brand value and continued sustainable growth. At the same time, there have been views that selling the brand at this point to maximize revenue could be a sound business strategy in the best interests of the company and its shareholders,” Hanwha Galleria said in a press statement. “If the brand is sold, we will further diversify our business portfolio and enhance the market competitiveness of our shopping mall sector by redevelo
