Hyundai Motor’s Namyang R&D Center drives software-defined vehicle transformation

HWASEONG, Gyeonggi Province — Inside a dimly lit studio at Hyundai Motor Group’s Namyang R&D Center, a researcher sits in a carbon-fiber cockpit surrounded by a massive 270-degree curved screen. As he hits the accelerator, the simulated road rushes past, and the entire rig tilts and vibrates, mimicking subtle asphalt textures of a real test track. Building countless physical prototypes for every design iteration is no longer viable. Instead, Hyundai Motor relies on a high-performance driving simulator operating on a six-degrees-of-freedom (6DOF) motion system. The simulator translates linear and rotational movements — including roll and pitch — into an ultra-realistic driving experience. To achieve maximum fidelity, the carmaker scanned its Namyang proving grounds down to the millimeter, capturing specific slopes, speed bumps and surface roughness. To prevent massive rendering files from lagging, the company deployed a world-first "Terrain Server" system that streams topographical data in real time based on the virtual car’s location. The simulator is highly versatile. Researcher

Tech firms race to recruit AI specialists

As artificial intelligence (AI) emerges as the go-to concept for corporate survival, Korea’s tech giants are scrambling to fill their staffs with AI specialists. They are doubling down on recruitment, partnerships and academic outreach, while also making efforts to lock in experts already on their payroll. In a move signaling urgency, Kakao on Monday launched its first-ever groupwide hiring campaign, breaking from its traditionally conservative hiring practices. The large-scale recruitment drive spans all job categories across its affiliates, including Kakao Games, Mobility, Bank, Entertainment and Pay. It is aimed at securing what the company calls “AI native” professionals — individuals who grew up surrounded by AI and digital tools. “Today’s young people are the first generation to grow up alongside diverse AI technologies, learning to use them and developing together,” company CEO Chung Shin-a said while announcing the campaign earlier this month. “We look forward to young talents who can discover creative answers through distinctive and unconventional questions.”

Science minister visits KT's office amid mobile payment breach

Science Minister Bae Kyung-hoon visited an office of Korea's No. 2 mobile carrier KT Corp. on Thursday, calling for an all-out effort to address a recent series of unauthorized mobile payments. The visit came after a total of 278 cases of unauthorized mobile payments worth 170 million won ($122,000) had been reported by KT users as of Wednesday, raising concerns over a possible leak of customer data. "The latest breach is a significant issue that directly affects people's trust in the telecommunications system in their daily lives," Bae said. "We ask for all-out efforts to regain the public's trust and to recognize that strong security is an essential element in making the country one of the world's top three players in the artificial intelligence sector," he added. Bae also urged the company to proactively cooperate with the related investigation. On Tuesday, the science ministry launched a special team to probe the recent breach, a day after KT officially reported the case to the Korea Internet & Security Agency.

Hanwha Aerospace partners with Britain's BAE for anti-jamming tech

Defense giant Hanwha Aerospace said Thursday it has joined forces with Britain's BAE Systems to adopt advanced global positioning system (GPS) technology for its precision-guided weapon system with anti-jamming features. Under the agreement, Hanwha will integrate BAE Systems' GPS and anti-jamming solutions into the Korean firm's Chunmoo multiple launch rocket system, known as the Deep Strike Capability system overseas. Hanwha said the envisioned development will enhance the system's operational reliability in highly contested electronic environments, noting that BAE's related technologies have already been verified by various members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. "The purpose of this cooperation with BAE Systems is to secure advanced electronic warfare protection technology to protect our guided weapon systems," said Lee Boo-whan, who leads Hanwha's precision guided munition division. "Based on a technological advantage to counter electronic warfare threats, we will strengthen our position in the global market," he added.

SMR sensor startup draws seed investments from FuturePlay

X-Sentry, a startup developing sensor solutions for small modular reactors (SMRs), has secured seed investments from a number of accelerators, including FuturePlay, the companies said Thursday. X-Sentry is developing sensor solutions for the safety monitoring of next-generation SMRs. The company owns sensor technology that maintains high accuracy and durability in extreme environments, while its miniaturized design allows for minimal changes to reactor structures. Along with FuturePlay, Seoul National University’s investment firm Seoul Techno Holdings and venture capital SOLiD X participated the early investing round. The raised amount was not disclosed. With the latest investment, X-Sentry plans to accelerate the commercialization of its technology. Will SPC’s Chipotle business in Korea succeed?

Korean food conglomerate SPC has established a new joint venture with Chipotle Mexican Grill to open the American casual restaurant chain here, according to SPC Thursday. Fans who enjoyed the brand’s Mexican-inspired menu outside of Korea are excited about the news. Questions yet remain over whether SPC can manage the operation well enough to sustain the brand’s long-term success in Korea’s competitive and fast-changing dining scene. Big Bite Company, an SPC unit which operates burger chain Shake Shack here, and Chipotle Mexican Grill signed a deal in July to establish S&C Restaurants Holdings. SPC Vice President Hur Hee-soo and Chipotle CEO Scott Boatwright signed the deal. Under the deal, Big Bite Company has exclusive rights to operate Chipotle in Korea and Singapore. The first Chipotle restaurant is scheduled to open in Seoul and Singapore next year. “Given the familiarity of this iconic brand among Koreans and Singaporeans, and their passion for exceptional culinary experiences, these two markets are ideal entry points for Chipotle in Asia,” said Hur. He added, “In additi

KT mobile payment breach rattles users over new security threat

A series of unauthorized mobile payment fraud cases have recently hit KT users in Seoul and the surrounding Gyeonggi Province, sparking an unprecedented type of security threat, with suspicions that rogue cellular base stations were used for the crimes. During a press briefing Wednesday, the Ministry of Science and ICT said KT has confirmed 278 cases of mobile payment fraud cases among its users with the total losses expected to surpass 170 million won ($122,460), double the previous counts of reported cases as new cases continue to emerge. The mobile payment breach first surfaced last week as police investigated unauthorized mobile charges affecting KT users residing in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi Province. About 20 victims reported that they were suspiciously charged for transactions such as digital gift cards and transit card top-ups from Aug. 27-31. The issue quickly escalated when more payment fraud cases were reported in Seoul. KT filed a cyber incident report with the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) and the ICT ministry on Monday evening, leading the ministry to set up a joint

Korea Zinc-backed activist platform accused of using major firms to attack Young Poong

ACT, a platform presenting itself as representing minority shareholders, received financial support from Korea Zinc and deliberately targeted other major listed companies to justify an attack on Young Poong, which has teamed up with private equity firm MBK Partners in a dispute over the zinc smelter’s management rights, Young Poong claimed Wednesday. The company called ACT’s actions “market-disrupting” and urged prompt intervention from financial authorities. Young Poong cited an ACT report from Feb. 11 this year that showed the platform had carried out a project targeting companies unrelated to the management dispute, such as Emart and Lotte Shopping. Under the project, the platform planned to submit shareholder proposals, including the adoption of cumulative voting suggested by Young Poong Precision (now KZ Precision), controlled by Korea Zinc Chairman Choi Yun-beom. The report also included plans to send shareholder letters to 20 major firms, including Samsung Electronics, Naver and Hyundai Motor, calling for the adoption of cumulative voting. Through this strategy, according

Fintechs turn profit, accelerate overseas expansion drives

Korea’s three major fintechs — Naver Financial, KakaoPay and Toss — have turned a profit for the first time this year, market watchers said Wednesday. Their collective strong performance was driven by rapid adoption of digital payment, platform efficiency and services powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Some of their smaller peers are also showing strong earnings, laying the groundwork for initial public offerings and overseas expansion. But many say policy uncertainties and market saturation remain a risk, adding that their long-term success will depend on innovation, diversification and agility in a rapidly changing financial market landscape. According to Financial Supervisory Service data, the Kakao subsidiary reported an operating profit of 4.4 billion won ($3.3 million) in the first three months of this year, a dramatic turnaround that broke 15 quarters of operating losses. Its operating profit doubled to 9.3 billion won in the second quarter. The strong figure was led by a 35 percent year-on-year increase in in-person transactions, coupled with no significant losses rela
