Hyundai Motor’s Namyang R&D Center drives software-defined vehicle transformation

HWASEONG, Gyeonggi Province — Inside a dimly lit studio at Hyundai Motor Group’s Namyang R&D Center, a researcher sits in a carbon-fiber cockpit surrounded by a massive 270-degree curved screen. As he hits the accelerator, the simulated road rushes past, and the entire rig tilts and vibrates, mimicking subtle asphalt textures of a real test track. Building countless physical prototypes for every design iteration is no longer viable. Instead, Hyundai Motor relies on a high-performance driving simulator operating on a six-degrees-of-freedom (6DOF) motion system. The simulator translates linear and rotational movements — including roll and pitch — into an ultra-realistic driving experience. To achieve maximum fidelity, the carmaker scanned its Namyang proving grounds down to the millimeter, capturing specific slopes, speed bumps and surface roughness. To prevent massive rendering files from lagging, the company deployed a world-first "Terrain Server" system that streams topographical data in real time based on the virtual car’s location. The simulator is highly versatile. Researcher

Samsung, SK hope for eased US chip equipment regulation for China plants

Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are closely monitoring U.S. regulatory developments on exporting chipmaking equipment to their plants in China, hoping the Donald Trump administration will set rules more favorable to them. According to industry officials Sunday, the two Korean chipmakers are tracking the U.S. Commerce Department’s movement on the Validated End-User (VEU) designations, waivers that had granted the Korean firms indefinite clearance to ship key chipmaking equipment to their Chinese facilities. On Aug. 29, the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) in the Department of Commerce announced that it has “closed a Biden-era loophole known as the VEU program,” and the companies will now have to obtain export licenses to send equipment. According to BIS, it will revise the existing VEU authorizations list for China by removing Samsung China Semiconductor and SK hynix Semiconductor China. This rule is set to take effect Dec. 31. Samsung and SK hynix obtained VEU status under the Joe Biden administration, which allowed them to send most semiconductor equipment, except for certai

Korea-US trade negotiations go adrift

Korea’s trade negotiations with the United States are stuck in limbo amid unresolved friction over the operation of a $350 billion U.S. investment fund. On Sunday, Korea’s Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan returned to Seoul from his visit to New York, where he sought to fine-tune details of the agreement with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. The latest ministerial talks, however, made little progress, apparently due to stark differences in the approach to the fund’s operation. Upon his arrival at Incheon International Airport, Kim declined to specify, only saying that “negotiations are underway between both sides.” While the two nations reached a broad deal in late July regarding the megasized investment fund for the U.S. as part of a tariff agreement, the launch of the fund is being delayed, as Washington is demanding 90 percent of the profits from the investment. Korea has refused, saying such an “unreasonable” deal will harm its national interest. Both countries have also failed to narrow their differences over the financing of the fund. Korea hopes to finance most

LG Electronics to install digital signage at NFL Baltimore Ravens' stadium

LG Electronics said Sunday it will supply large-scale digital signage to M&T Bank Stadium, home of the Baltimore Ravens of the U.S. National Football League (NFL). Under a new partnership, the Korean tech giant will install 1,115 square meters of state-of-the-art digital signage throughout the stadium, located in Baltimore, Maryland. The installation includes four ultra-large, high-definition displays at the north, south, east and west ends of the stands, including a massive central scoreboard. A giant display stretching approximately 65 meters at the main entrance gate is expected to become a new stadium landmark, LG Electronics said. LG also plans to install more than 100 LG TVs throughout concourse areas and spectator walkways to ensure fans can enjoy game highlights from anywhere inside the venue. Following the end of the NFL season, the company will install an additional 215-square-meter LED display on the stadium's outer wall, the company said, with additional high-resolution screens to be set up in nearby outdoor plazas.

Real estate companies seek funding from foreign private lenders as banks tighten loan standards

Real estate companies in Korea are increasingly seeking financing from global asset managers and alternative lenders as domestic banks scale back lending to riskier businesses to beef up their financial soundness, industry officials said Friday. "The current market dislocation, marked by high levels of domestic corporate debts, challenges facing local lenders and subdued real estate sentiment, has opened a strategic window for foreign private credit investors," said Matthew Sohn, CEO of CapitaLand Investment Korea. Private credit is a lending structure involving privately negotiated loans between borrowers and non-bank lenders. It offers faster execution and more flexible terms than traditional bank financing. "In addition to development funding, investors are drawn to other credit tools such as loan refinancing and capital structure optimization," Sohn added. The shift comes as Korea’s real estate market continues to falter. Weak buyer demand, a glut of unsold apartment units and surging construction costs have deepened the slump. While Korean banks have historically dominated corporat

Korean companies shift strategies for next year's CES

The annual CES trade show in Las Vegas will undergo significant changes next year regarding the participation of Korean companies, which have long been among the most prominent exhibitors at the world's largest tech fair. Some companies have chosen to skip the event to better focus on their core businesses, while others plan to increase the size of their exhibits. SK Group said its affiliates will not operate a joint exhibition booth at next year's show. Since 2019, Korea's second-largest conglomerate has showcased products and technologies from SK hynix, SK Telecom and SK Innovation at a single booth, attracting global business leaders such as Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won has consistently attended CES, even as other top conglomerate chiefs opted out. However, SK hynix is the only SK affiliate currently listed as an exhibitor for next year. Industry officials expect the chipmaker to concentrate on strengthening its partnership with Nvidia at the event. "There is a possibility that some of our affiliates will display their products and hold business meetings at n

LG Energy Solution CEO vows full support for workers released from US detention

The chief executive officer of LG Energy Solution on Friday pledged to provide full support to company workers who returned home after a weeklong detention in the United States following an immigration raid at a battery plant construction site in Georgia. Kim Dong-myung made the remark shortly after a Korean Air plane carrying more than 300 Korean workers landed at Incheon International Airport. "Although there were many difficulties, government officials worked hard to achieve this outcome," Kim told reporters. "We are very grateful for the extraordinary efforts that led to such a prompt release and for the careful discussions that ensured no disadvantages for their reentry into the U.S." The CEO said the company will "spare no effort" to support those who have returned so that they can resettle smoothly. The workers were detained last week in a sweeping immigration raid at the Georgia construction site for a battery plant to be operated by a Hyundai Motor Group-LG Energy Solution joint venture. With regard to the possible disruption to the plant construction, Kim said it was still "mana

POSCO tempers Alaska LNG deal hype after Glenfarne announcement

POSCO International has signed a partnership with Glenfarne Alaska LNG, the lead developer of the Alaska liquefied natural gas (LNG) project. Despite heightened expectations that it could become the first Korean company to join the $44 billion energy project, the trading firm is stressing that a final decision on its participation has yet to be made, in contrast to Glenfarne’s conclusive tone. Glenfarne announced on Thursday that it had inked a strategic partnership on the project’s development with the POSCO unit during Gastech, an energy conference in Milan, Italy, Wednesday (local time). Glenfarne said the agreement includes initial terms for POSCO to supply steel to construct the project’s massive 1,300-kilometer-long, 107-centimeter-wide pipeline, which will connect the state’s North Slope to southern Alaska for export. The terms also contain conditions for a 20-year heads of agreement (HOA) that POSCO will purchase 1 million tons of LNG offtake per year on a free on board (FOB) basis, the project’s first. Offtake refers to a long-term supply purchase agreement. The deal w

Distillery Ki One conquers international competition with whiskey Unicorn

Whiskey distillery Ki One conquered the global whiskey market in a major international competition in the United Kingdom, proving the competitiveness of the Korean brand over rival firms worldwide. The company on Sept. 4 won the Worldwide Whiskey Trophy at this year’s International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) held in London for its Unicorn whiskey, one of the company’s three signature brands. The winning bottle was selected for entry from the company’s production line, not a specially prepared item for the competition, Ki One said. Bryan Do, CEO of Ki One Distillery in Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province, said Friday he didn’t expect to win an IWSC award for at least another three years, considering his company’s comparatively young age. It began production in 2020. “We all screamed when IWSC declared our brand as the category’s winner,” Do said during a press conference. IWCS, established in 1969, sees more than 4,000 brands from over 90 countries every year. “It was my dream. I guess I have achieved it earlier than I thought. The achievement also means a lot because IW
