Busan Mobility Show seeks breakthrough as popularity fades

The 2026 Busan International Mobility Show opens Friday amid a deepening identity crisis, as experts and industry officials warn that the biennial auto exhibition risks becoming an expensive, fragmented marketing showcase for only a handful of carmakers. While eight global brands including Hyundai Motor, Kia, BMW Korea and BYD Korea will occupy the exhibition floors, the glaring absence of major players such as Mercedes-Benz Korea, Renault Korea and KG Mobility, highlights the event's declining appeal. The limited lineup for the show reflects a broader challenge facing auto shows worldwide, as manufacturers increasingly favor digital product launches and dedicated brand events over large-scale exhibitions. Industry experts have repeatedly warned that without a radical pivot toward a specialized, tech-driven identity such as a focus on artificial intelligence (AI) or software-defined vehicles (SDVs), the Busan event faces the same obsolescence that has recently claimed legacy exhibitions abroad. Despite such recommendations, this year's Busan International Mobility Show is expected to lar

KB, Shinhan set for fiercer rivalry as AI-driven shift reshapes finance

The rivalry between KB Financial Group, which is seeking to hold onto its No. 1 position, and Shinhan Financial Group, eager to regain the top spot, is set to intensify this year as both groups reshuffle their lineups, industry officials said Sunday. This comes at a critical turning point for the financial sector, marked by the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and a prolonged low-growth environment. KB Financial has recently reshaped its organizational structure, launching a new future strategy division that integrates group-wide strategy, synergy and environmental, social and corporate governance functions with AI, data and digital innovation initiatives. The reorganization underscores KB’s full-scale push to accelerate AI-led transformation across the group this year. As part of that effort, KB convened a management workshop last Friday, bringing together its entire executive leadership to review business strategies under the theme “Transition and Expansion.” During the session, Chairman Yang Jong-hee said, "All executives and employees must evolve into strategists and innov

CES 2026 AI boom to drive surge in displays: Samsung Display CEO

LAS VEGAS — As artificial intelligence reshapes the global electronics industry, some predict a future in which screens will fade in importance, replaced by voice- and sensor-based interfaces. Samsung Display, however, takes a different view. “As edge AI devices expand, the number of displays will increase significantly,” its CEO Yi Chung said during an interview with reporters on Wednesday (local time), arguing that screens will remain central to user experience even in an AI-driven world. Edge AI refers to running artificial intelligence algorithms directly on devices, rather than sending data to a central server or cloud for processing. Speaking on the sidelines of CES 2026, Yi said that while some devices aim to minimize the role of displays, an opposing trend is emerging as AI expands beyond smartphones into wearables, vehicles and robots. “There is a trend toward reducing displays, but at the same time, displays are being emphasized even more,” Yi said. “Without displays, devices become very inconvenient to use.” Yi stressed that AI will not eliminate screens but multip

CES 2026 Samsung Biologics seeks AI-powered manufacturing solutions

LAS VEGAS — Samsung Biologics CEO John Rim attended CES 2026 last week to explore strategies for artificial intelligence (AI)-driven digital transformation in manufacturing. “Attending CES allows us to experience global trends in advanced technologies and gain insights for manufacturing innovation in the AI era,” Rim said. He also participated in various sessions during CES, including Caterpillar’s keynote, discussions on AI adoption in manufacturing and automation-based smart factory technologies. Traditionally a consumer electronics and IT showcase, CES has evolved into a broader platform encompassing AI, robotics, health care and other industries undergoing digital transformation. This year’s edition centered on AI, digital health and advanced mobility, with particular attention on “physical AI” — technologies that enable AI systems to interact directly with the real world. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said, "One of the biggest (and) most important one is physical AI," while global firms such as Siemens and Caterpillar highlighted plans to adopt digital twin and smart facto

CES 2026 LG Innotek shifts from parts supplier to solutions provider

LAS VEGAS — LG Innotek CEO Moon Hyuk-soo said Wednesday (local time) that the company is accelerating its shift from a traditional components supplier model to a solutions-oriented business focused on profitability, with the package substrate segment serving as a key growth driver. “LG Innotek is no longer a parts company,” Moon said during an interview with reporters on the sidelines of the CES 2026 tech fair. “This year, we will reorganize our business structure toward a high-value, high-profit, high-performance portfolio.” Moon explained that the company’s business now focuses on three main areas: sensing, substrates and control. These technologies, originally developed for consumer electronics, are now being applied to cars, robots, drones and satellites. “In broad terms, everything we do falls into sensing, substrates and control,” Moon said. Control technologies include systems that manage electricity flow in electric vehicles, as well as motor and steering units. Rather than just supplying parts, LG Innotek now combines hardware with software and middleware to provi

InterviewHalal-certified Korean products remain scarce despite wide-open markets

CHEONGJU, North Chungcheong Province — Korean halal products are so few in number worldwide that the halal certifying agency chief here often feels frustrated. For Muslim visitors to Korea, the variety and availability of halal-labeled Korean foods can be surprisingly limited. Some 3,000 halal food stores here, including Asia Mart and Halal World Mart, are mostly importing to fill their shelves. If the situation is this limited even in Korea, it is even more challenging in overseas markets. To Korea Halal Authority (KHA) Managing Director Mustafa Jin Jae-nam, these stores should be supplied with Korean halal products instead. “Major distributors in Islam nations like Mah Sing Group in Malaysia sell tens of thousands of halal items for local Muslim consumers,” Jin said during an interview with The Korea Times at KHA’s office in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province. “Among them, Korean products account for only a few hundred, mostly food and beauty products.” KHA, having a mutual recognition agreement (MRA) or memorandum of understanding with 30 halal-certifying authorities rep

Canadian sub deal hinges on carmaker cooperation

Carmakers Hyundai Motor and Volkswagen have emerged as key players in the ongoing competition between Hanwha Ocean and TKMS to secure Canada’s order for 12 patrol submarines worth 60 billion Canadian dollars ($43 billion), which would be the largest single order in Korea’s defense export history if it were to win the bid. Amid Ottawa’s request for Korea and Germany to invest in Canada’s automotive industry in exchange for the massive submarine deal, market watchers are now focusing on whether Hyundai Motor will play its part in the project, which has already been elevated to a government-to-government initiative. According to sources familiar with the matter Friday, senior executives from Hyundai Motor and Hanwha Ocean will accompany presidential chief of staff Kang Hoon-sik and industry minister Kim Jung-kwan on their trip to Canada later this month to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and other top officials. Kang has served as Korea’s special envoy for strategic economic cooperation, tasked with visiting countries interested in purchasing Korean defense product

Can robotics pull LG Electronics out of slump?

LG Electronics posted a quarterly operating loss for the first time in nearly 10 years, as its TV, home appliance and other existing flagship businesses faced limits in their growth. The company said the downturn is temporary as it seeks to regain momentum through new businesses. Multiple industry officials said LG’s future hinges on robotics, noting that it is more critical than ever for the company to clearly define not only its technology road map but also its broader strategy for expanding its robot business. The company on Friday released its earnings guidance for the fourth quarter of 2025, projecting sales of 23.85 trillion won ($16.35 billion) and an operating loss of 109.4 billion won. If the numbers are confirmed, LG Electronics will post a quarterly operating loss for the first time since the fourth quarter of 2016. Revenue increased 4.8 percent from a year earlier, but the company swung to an operating loss from an operating profit of 135.4 billion won in the fourth quarter of 2024. The estimated loss is far greater than brokerages’ consensus forecast of 8.4 billion won,

Coupang customers on alert over phishing attempts after data breach

Lee Won-son, a woman in her 40s and a long-time Coupang customer, said she could not sleep after hearing about a friend who was almost duped in what appeared to be a voice-phishing attempt linked to the e-commerce giant. “I keep replaying the story in my head,” she said. Lee she wondered what she would have done if she had been the one to pick up the phone. “The details were unsettling. It sounded so real,” Lee said. “They knew her name, her phone number, even mentioned her bank account. I suddenly realized how easily it could have been me.” She said her friend, also a Coupang customer, recently received a call from a man claiming to be a credit card delivery serviceman. He told the friend that he had a “Coupang account-related credit card” issued in her name and needed to deliver it to her home. When the friend said she had not applied for such a card, the caller said that her identity may have been stolen through Coupang, instructing her to call a customer service number beginning with 1544. When she dialed the number, a person claiming to be a customer service worker cite

LG Energy Solution reports operating loss in Q4

LG Energy Solution on Friday said it continued to remain in the red in the fourth quarter although its operating loss nearly halved from a year earlier amid weak global demand for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. Operating loss in the October-December period was estimated at 122 billion won ($83.8 million), compared with a loss of 225 billion won posted in the fourth quarter of 2024, the company said in a preliminary report. Sales decreased 4.8 percent to 6.14 trillion won. The data for net income was not available. The operating loss was 8.5 percent lower than the average estimate, according to a survey by Yonhap Infomax, the financial data firm of Yonhap News Agency. LG Energy Solution said it has received a tax credit of 332.8 billion won through the Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit (AMPC) under the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act. Excluding the AMPC, the company recorded an operating loss of 454.8 billion won in the fourth quarter, the company said. The company will release its final earnings report later. For all of 2025, operating profit came to 1.34 trillion won, up 133.9 percen
