Public power generation firms' proposed merger sparks debate

A third-party analysis proposing that the government merge Korea's five state-run power generation companies to streamline structural inefficiency is prompting debates, with civic groups arguing Friday that the merger would still fail to incentivize generators to minimize costs and ultimately expand the use of renewable energy. A day earlier, the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment revealed a study report conducted by Samil PwC on optimal scenarios that could improve the efficiency of five state-run power companies — Korea South-East Power, Korea Midland Power, Korea Western Power, Korea Southern Power and Korea East-West Power. The companies were originally a singular subsidiary under the country’s exclusive state-run power distributor Korea Electric Power Corp. They were all separated in 2001 as individual entities under the government’s power industry restructuring plan. The report said merging them back is “structurally most appropriate.” It noted that while the government is seeking to introduce renewable energy-based power facilities with an overall capacity of 1

LG CNS unveils container-based AI Box for rapid AI data center expansion

LG CNS has rolled out a compact data center solution, the artificial intelligence (AI) Box, capable of hosting up to 576 graphics processing units (GPUs) per container, aiming to accelerate its push into the global AI infrastructure market. Built as a standardized package, the AI Box can be deployed in about six months since it doesn’t require new building construction, unlike conventional data centers that can take about two years to build. The company explained that each module can operate independently or be connected in clusters of dozens to form a hyperscale AI data center, allowing customers to start small and expand as demand grows while keeping upfront investment low. Leveraging LG CNS’ 40 years of design, build and operate experience, the container-based solution incorporates technologies from across LG Group, integrating power, cooling and IT systems into a unified architecture. It features cooling distribution units, precision air conditioners and chillers from LG Electronics, along with battery systems from LG Energy Solution that support uninterruptible power supply (UPS

Korea to cut investments if Canada splits submarine contract

Seoul made it clear Thursday that investments by Korean firms in Canada would be smaller than proposed if Ottawa splits a contract for 12 new patrol submarines worth 60 billion Canadian dollars ($43 billion) by purchasing an equal number from both Hanwha Ocean and Germany’s TKMS. Speaking to reporters before departing for Canada to support Hanwha’s bid and attend the completion ceremony for LG Energy Solution’s battery plant in the province of Ontario, Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan said the level of industrial cooperation with the North American country would not remain the same if it orders only six submarines from the Korean shipbuilder. “Of course, we have been trying to win an order for 12 submarines,” he said. “However, it totally depends on the Canadian government’s decision.” Citing Canadian government sources, The Globe and Mail newspaper reported earlier this week that Ottawa is considering purchasing six KSS-III Batch-II submarines from Hanwha for the Pacific coast and six Type-212CD submarines from TKMS for the Atlantic coast. Following the report, concerns h

Gov’t pushes globalization of Korean cuisine with Sura School

The government will open a new culinary school for authentic Korean foods, or “hansik,” aimed at overseas students to boost the globalization of traditional Korean cuisine. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said Thursday that Sura School will be a state-run global hansik education institute to incubate chefs and promote hansik worldwide. The school will offer two curricula. One will focus on Korean cuisine in general, ranging from basic knowledge to cooking techniques, as well as the management of restaurants and other related establishments. Starting in the second half of this year, the curriculum will be provided at universities, companies and other private organizations designated by the government as a Sura School branch. Developed by the government, it will center around training practical techniques. Internship at renowned hansik restaurants here will be part of the program. Prior to launching the school, the government will begin promoting the initiative overseas. Korean embassies and state-run cultural agencies abroad will serve as outposts for the effort, h

Board of flour industry association resigns over alleged price-fixing scandal

The entire board of the Korea Flour Milling Industry Association resigned Thursday over an alleged price-fixing scandal involving major domestic producers, the association said. The association said it held a general meeting and decided that the heads of all seven member companies will step down from the association's board to take responsibility over the allegation. "We deeply apologize for causing great disappointment and concern to the public," the association said in a statement. Association members include CJ Cheiljedang Corp., Daehan Flour Mills Co. and Sajo Dongaone Co. The companies have faced an investigation by the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) for allegedly colluding to fix flour prices between November 2019 and October of last year. TerraPower wins approval to build 1st commercial SMR in US

TerraPower, a small modular reactor (SMR) developer, won approval to build an advanced commercial nuclear power plant in the United States — a key milestone that proves the firm's technological stability in the emerging industrial sector. The approval will pave the way for SK Innovation and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) to deepen their ties with TerraPower for its upcoming SMR project in the U.S. In 2023, the three firms forged a partnership to jointly develop fourth-generation SMR technology. According to SK Innovation, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission recently authorized the construction of TerraPower’s first commercial SMR in the U.S. state of Wyoming. This marks the first time the authority has granted construction approval for an SMR. Following the latest approval, TerraPower will build the world’s first commercial SMR plant in the U.S. state with a plan to start its operation by 2030. The approval is widely seen as official recognition of the safety and technical maturity of TerraPower. TerraPower was founded in 2008 by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and is conside

German court orders TCL to halt QLED TV ads over false claims

A German court has ordered Chinese TV maker TCL to halt advertisements promoting some of its products as quantum dot LED (QLED) TVs, ruling that the models do not deliver the color reproduction expected from QLED TVs. According to industry officials Thursday, District Court of Munich I ruled that TCL’s German subsidiary violated the country’s unfair competition law by advertising some of its products, including the QLED870 series, as QLED TVs. Samsung Electronics filed the suit in April last year, claiming that TCL’s ads were deceptive. The court noted that consumers expect quantum dot technologies to improve color reproduction, but the quantum dot diffusion plates used by TCL did not deliver the expected improvements, constituting a deceptive trading practice. Quantum dot technology enables more precise control and expression of colors. Using this technology, QLED TVs deliver brighter images and improved picture quality compared with conventional LED TVs. The International Electrotechnical Commission defines QLED TVs as products that use blue light as the backlight and apply a stru

Gov't deliberates response to EU's industrial accelerator bill with local industries

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources held a meeting with local industry officials Thursday to discuss their response to a new industrial capacity building bill by the European Union (EU) expected to affect Korean companies, ministry officials said. The ministry met with officials from major automobile, steel and battery companies here after the EU announced the Industrial Accelerator Act (IAA) aimed at strengthening the industrial capacity of EU countries. The EU is pushing to give priority to low-carbon, made in EU products in the public procurement area while introducing new conditions for foreign investment in the region, including a stronger screening process for large investments in strategic sectors and mandatory employment of EU workers, under the legislative proposal. Participants of Thursday's meeting, which included Hyundai Motor, asked the government to put in efforts to prevent the IAA from adversely affecting Korean companies and to call on the EU to relax the prioritization of EU-made products, according to the ministry. The ministry said it will address the compan

Aerial mobility in Korea to soar with new vertiport in Goyang

The government is bolstering the introduction of urban aerial mobility (UAM) services in Korea, with plans to build a new vertiport in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, within this year for the first field test. It is the first such infrastructure to be built in a public open space outside a research facility. A vertiport is where electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft dock for passengers to board and disembark or for maintenance and repairs. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said Thursday it will sign a memorandum of understanding with Goyang Special City in Gyeonggi Province on Friday for the use of land in Ilsanseo District for a UAM test facility that will include the vertiport, a passenger terminal and a hangar. The site is next to KINTEX, which hosts major global exhibitions throughout the year. The three-level vertiport, based on the country's first standard design for the facility, will be built on a 1,836-square-meter site. Once completed, eVTOL aircraft will be tested flying between the vertiport and two nearby airfields along the Han River. The verti
