Hyosung launches hyperscale AI data center in Seoul

Hyosung Group is expanding its push into artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure with the launch of a hyperscale data center in Seoul, marking its entry into Korea’s fast-growing data center market. The company announced Wednesday that Hyosung-STT GDC, a joint venture between Hyosung Heavy Industries and Singapore-based operator ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), opened STT Seoul 1, a 30-megawatt data center, in Geumcheon District, Seoul, the previous day. Designed to support cloud and AI workloads, the new facility combines Hyosung’s power infrastructure expertise with STT GDC's global standards in data center design, operation and service management. The facility is capable of accommodating increasingly power-intensive and high-density computing environments driven by generative AI applications. The company explained that one of the center's biggest advantages is its location in Seoul, where securing large-scale power capacity has become increasingly difficult due to energy regulations and grid constraints, providing low-latency connectivity to major business districts

Kumho Tire has renewed its partnership with the Kia Tigers, extending its official sponsorship with the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) club through the 2028 season, the company said Monday. Kumho Tire held a partnership renewal signing ceremony on Friday at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field in Gwangju, home of the Kia Tigers. Under the renewed agreement, Kia Tigers players will wear uniforms featuring the Kumho Tire logo on the right side of the chest throughout all regular-season games this year. The sponsorship will also cover all 144 home and away games, as well as the club’s website, YouTube channel, ticketing and fan publications. The Kia Tigers are the most decorated club in KBO League history, having won the Korean Series a record number of times. The roster includes internationally experienced and national team-caliber players such as Yang Hyeon-jong, Na Sung-bum, Kim Do-young and Kim Seon-bin. Kumho Tire initially reinstated its partnership with the Kia Tigers in 2022 after a four-year hiatus, citing the club’s broad national fan base as a key driver of brand visibility. The co

HS Hyosung confident scrapped steel cord deal won’t hurt Umicore joint venture

HS Hyosung Advanced Materials has dismissed concerns over fundraising for its battery materials joint venture with Belgium-based Umicore following the withdrawal of its plan to sell its steel cord business to Bain Capital. The Korean firm emphasized that booming carbon fiber and aramid yarn markets have enabled it to secure sufficient funds for new ventures. “Carbon fiber and aramid yarn are used in the energy, defense, aviation and space industries,” a company spokesperson said Monday. “We have also seen rising revenue from mobility materials used for airbags and car interiors.” The company also claimed steady growth in demand for steel cord, which strengthens tires to withstand the heavier weights of electric vehicles. “Given the recent tensions in the Middle East, we viewed the sale of our steel cord business as a potential risk to the stability of supply chains for our global partners,” it said Friday, confirming the withdrawal and denying any plan to revive the deal. Since January last year, HS Hyosung Advanced Materials had sought to sell its steel cord business for abou

Nexen Tire expands global reach with supply deal for Renault Korea’s Filante

Nexen Tire said Monday it will supply factory-fitted tires for Renault Korea’s new crossover model, Filante, extending its reach in global vehicle programs. The company said its all-season tire, Roadian GTX, will come in a 19-inch configuration designed for sport utility vehicles and crossover utility vehicles. Filante, a crossover blending sedan and SUV characteristics, is equipped with a hybrid powertrain and is positioned as a strategic model for Renault Korea. The tire maker said hybrid vehicles require higher technical standards for tires, and that the latest deal reflects Nexen Tire’s ability to meet those demands. The tires will be installed on models sold in Korea as well as export vehicles bound for Latin America and the Middle East, the Nexen Tire said. Nexen Tire said the Roadian GTX incorporates its latest technology to deliver durability and stable driving performance. A zigzag-patterned tread helps disperse road pressure to support stability, while an optimized load distribution design improves grip. A low-noise design tailored for electrified vehicles enhances quietnes

Concerns over post-PUBG growth prompts NPS to unload Krafton shares

Korea’s state pension fund, the National Pension Service (NPS), has unloaded its shares in Krafton, the developer of PUBG: Battlegrounds (PUBG), worth over 110 billion won ($72.87 million), apparently due to concerns over the game studio’s excessive sales reliance on the battle royale game. According to regulatory filings released April 1, the NPS has unloaded 551,844 Krafton shares from March 14, 2025 to Jan. 15 this year. Following the sales, it reduced its stake from 7.1 percent to 6.1 percent. Based on the average closing share price of 319,811 won during the period, the stake reduction is estimated at around 163.7 billion won. However, the total is likely to fall between 117.5 billion won and 197.6 billion won, reflecting the period’s lowest and highest prices, given that transactions were likely concentrated within specific price bands. Given that Krafton’s stock price has trended downward since its listing in 2021, the market estimates that the NPS may have incurred a loss of between 20 billion won and 100 billion won from the recent sale. The NPS did not reveal the reason

BYD awards prize vehicle to winner of Korean baking reality show

BYD Korea held a vehicle presentation ceremony for Hwang Ji-o, winner of "Cheonha Bakery: Bake Your Dream," Korea's first baking competition program broadcast on MBN, the automaker said Monday. The event took place at the BYD Auto showroom in southern Seoul, and was attended by Hwang and Cho In-chul, head of BYD Korea's passenger car division. “Cheonha Bakery,” in which BYD Korea participated as a brand partner, followed contestants competing to be named the country’s top baker, chronicling the challenges and personal stories of artisan bakers. Hwang, who won the program's final episode, which aired Sunday, earned top marks from the judging panel for technical skill and creative recipes. The prize vehicle, the BYD Sealion 7, is a premium electric SUV offering strong driving performance, safety and interior space, according to the Chinese automaker. Cho said the program resonated with BYD's brand identity. "Cheonha Bakery was not simply a program to find someone who bakes well — it was a process of each contestant 'baking' their own dreams," he said. "Failing countless times in front

LG CNS to lead next phase of Bank of Korea’s digital currency initiative

LG CNS, the IT services arm of LG Group, said it will serve as the lead contractor for the second phase of the Bank of Korea’s pilot program for institutional digital currency and deposit tokens. The program, Project Hangang, a joint initiative involving the Bank of Korea, the government and the banking sector, is designed to assess whether deposit tokens — bank deposits converted into tokenized form — can serve as both a new payment method and an efficient tool for public fund disbursement. A central feature of the second phase is a plan to use deposit tokens to disburse government subsidies, which the company described as a world first for public finance. As part of a plan under review and set for launch in the first half of the year, subsidies for electric vehicle charging infrastructure projects will be paid in deposit token form. The entire process, from disbursement to final settlement, would be recorded on a blockchain in real time, improving transparency. Digital vouchers built on deposit tokens can also be programmed in advance with restrictions on purpose, time period and

Park Hyeon-joo, chairman and founder of Mirae Asset Financial Group, said Monday that he will donate his entire 2025 dividend from Mirae Asset Global Investments, the group’s investment arm. For 16 consecutive years since 2010, Park has given away all dividends he has received from the firm. His cumulative donations have reached 34.7 billion won ($23 million). Saying that he would rather be “the greatest donor than the richest,” the financial magnate has consistently put his words into action. He has focused in particular on supporting areas tied to future competitiveness, including science and technology development and the next generation of professionals. The latest donation will be directed toward skill development programs through two nonprofit foundations under the group: the Mirae Asset Park Hyeon Joo Foundation and the Mirae Asset Hope Foundation. The two foundations have supported young people in Korea and around the world through scholarship programs, youth education initiatives and global cultural exchange opportunities. Indonesia can emerge as Korea’s energy, minerals hedge: commerce chamber head

Anindya Novyan Bakrie, chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, is positioning Korea-Indonesia ties as a strategic hedge for Korea’s energy and critical minerals security amid mounting geopolitical risks and energy market turmoil. Bakrie, who joined Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to Seoul last week, noted the two countries’ summit has underscored the need to move beyond ad hoc deals toward long-term industrial partnerships. “From a business point of view, the real value of this summit is that the agenda is practical … It covers trade, investment, defense, artificial intelligence (AI), infrastructure, shipbuilding, nuclear energy and energy transition,” he said in a written interview with The Korea Times. “That gives the private sector a clearer signal on where the partnership is heading.” Against the backdrop of the Iran war and renewed jitters over Middle East energy and resource supply chains, the chairman pointed to gas and broader upstream energy cooperation as the front line of Korea’s supply security. “In the near term, Indones

Gov't to offer low-interest loans to SMEs facing difficulties due to trade deals

The government will operate a low-interest loan program for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) suffering or expected to suffer damage from Korea's trade agreements with foreign countries, the industry ministry said Monday. Under the program, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources will select 30 companies that saw or will likely see their sales or production capacity fall by more than 5 percent from a year earlier due to the implementation of trade agreements with foreign partners, according to ministry officials. Selected companies will be eligible to apply for a loan of up to 7 billion won ($4.6 million) at a 2 percent interest rate. The ministry also plans to provide business consultation services to 20 firms to help them navigate through global trade uncertainties.

LS Electric lands $70 mil. US transformer deal

LS Electric secured a major contract worth $70 million (105.6 billion won) to supply its extra-high-voltage transformers to an energy infrastructure firm in the United States, the company said Monday. Under the deal, LS Power Solution, acquired by LS Electric in 2024, will supply its 345-kilovolt-class transformers for a large-scale data center operated by a big tech firm in the United States. Deliveries are scheduled from the fourth quarter of 2027 to the first half of 2028, according to LS Electric. The latest contract will further solidify the firm’s position in North America as demand for electricity soars in line with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing. The tech paradigm shift requires more investment for stable and efficient power infrastructures across the region. The shift has been further reinforced by a recent pledge from seven global tech firms, which pledged to source electricity for their data centers from self-built power generation facilities, rather than drawing from public grids. LS Electric has been strengthening its presence across the data
