SK hynix's non-manufacturing workers demand 8.25% wage hike in 2025 negotiations

Unionized non-manufacturing workers at chip giant SK hynix have entered wage negotiations with management, demanding an 8.25 percent pay increase, industry sources said Friday. The two sides held their first round of talks for the 2025 wage deal Wednesday, according to the sources. The union, one of the company's two major unions, demanded an 8.25 percent hike in salary and other benefits, citing the company's record-breaking performance last year. In 2024, the company and the union agreed on a 5.7 percent rise in wages. That year, SK hynix posted a record 19.8 trillion won ($14.4 billion) in net profit and 66.2 trillion won in sales on the back of rising demand for artificial intelligence (AI) chips, including high bandwidth memory (HBM). The company gave additional bonuses totaling 1,500 percent of their base salary to its employees earlier this year. SK hynix holds separate wage negotiations with its unions for office and manufacturing workers.

TEST DRIVE Volkswagen Atlas SUV set to challenge Palisade with comfortable ride

YEONGJONG ISLAND, Incheon — Volkswagen Group Korea’s Atlas SUV aims to challenge the Hyundai Motor Palisade's stronghold in the local family vehicle market. The Atlas recently made its debut in Korea, seeking to capture the rising demand for three-row family SUVs. The vehicle was as comfortable and soft as typical sedans during a one-hour test drive from Seoul to the West Sea island. The Atlas looked to focus on ensuring driving comfort to appeal more to customers seeking a family vehicle. Unlike other common German vehicles, the Atlas exuded softer driving performance during drives both in a highway and a city. The SUV was equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine. Its maximum output reaches 273 horsepower. However, it felt like this was not sufficient for the huge SUV, with a length reaching 5,095 millimeters, the longest among vehicles available for sale in the same segment here. At some points along the highway, the Atlas displayed weak acceleration performance, which was the largest downside to the vehicle. Despite the shortcomings, it was still a decent option for t

Prosecutors have raided HYBE, the K-pop agency behind global superstar group BTS, over allegations of insider trading by one of its executives, judicial sources said Thursday. According to the sources, the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office recently searched HYBE's headquarters in central Seoul to investigate allegations that an executive gained illicit profits worth 240 million won ($176,500) through stock trading using insider information. The executive, whose identity was withheld, is suspected of purchasing shares of YG Plus, an affiliate of another K-pop powerhouse YG Entertainment, after learning of HYBE's plan to invest in the company. Separately, HYBE founder and Chairman Bang Si-hyuk has also been under police investigation over charges that he intentionally misled investors ahead of the company's initial public offering in 2020.

GS E&C partners with Honeywell to drive digital transformation of energy plants

Major construction company GS E&C has partnered with smart technology solutions developer Honeywell to bolster its capability for the digital transformation of existing energy plants, marking its advancement to the environmental business in the energy plant industry. On Wednesday, Huh Yoon-hong, president and CEO of the Korean company, met with Lucian Boldea, president and CEO of Honeywell Industrial Automation — a division of the U.S.-based conglomerate — in Seoul, where the two signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU). Under the MOU, the two companies will cooperate on introducing technologies to transition the operation of existing energy plants to digital management. Key goals include reducing carbon emissions and maximizing efficiency in energy use at the facilities. Proximity to Yongin tech complex drives interest in Hyundai E&C’s Hillstate apartments

Hyundai E&C’s new apartment complex in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, is drawing strong interest, with units offered on a first-come, first-served basis selling quickly, the construction company said Thursday. According to the company, the biggest advantage of Hillstate Yongin Mark Valley is its proximity to the Yongin semiconductor national industrial complex, which is currently under construction. The government plans to cluster the nation's semiconductor companies and their research and development facilities across industrial complexes in Yongin and other cities in Gyeonggi Province. The construction firm is banking on the massive scale of the Yongin complex, believing it will directly drive up demand for nearby residential housing. According to the company, the complex spans 7.78 million square meters — nearly twice the size of another national semiconductor complex currently under construction in Pyeongtaek, which covers 4.15 million square meters. According to Hyundai E&C, the project cost for the Yongin complex is estimated at 9.1 trillion won ($6.6 billion), nearly three times

Hanwha Ocean partners with Polish shipyards on naval projects

Hanwha Ocean Co., a major South Korean shipbuilder, said Thursday it has signed preliminary agreements with two Polish shipyards to cooperate on naval vessel construction and maintenance. The company signed separate memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with PGZ SW and Nauta Shipyard during the ongoing International Maritime Defense Industry Exhibition (MADEX 2025) at BEXCO in Busan, about 325 kilometers south of Seoul, Hanwha said in a press release. "The MOUs with Poland's leading shipyards are not just technological partnerships between companies. They will also serve as a bridge for bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the shipbuilding sector," a Hanwha official said. The partnerships are part of Hanwha Ocean's efforts to secure a favorable position in Poland's Orka Project, a submarine procurement program estimated to be worth up to 8 trillion won ($5.8 billion). Under the agreement with PGZ SW, Hanwha will cooperate in the joint development of offshore patrol vessels (OPVs), surface vessels, support ships and unmanned underwater systems, the company said. GM Korea sells assets for sustainable business operations amid US tariffs

General Motors (GM) Korea has decided to sell its unprofitable assets to ensure profitability and maintain sustainable operations here amid ongoing tariff pressures from the United States, the carmaker said Thursday. As part of the decision, the company will gradually sell its nine after-sales service centers, as well as underused facilities and land at its main production site in Bupyeong, Incheon. The decision has fueled concerns that the carmaker may take additional steps toward withdrawing from the Korean market, given its sales structure's heavy reliance on exports to the U.S. GM Korea is also subject to a 25-percent tariff imposed by the Donald Trump administration. However, the company firmly denied rumors of a potential exit, stating that the latest measures are intended to "secure business efficiency" and support its sustainable operations here. “Our directly controlled service centers have remained unprofitable, so we decided to stop their operations and, instead, strengthen our ties with 386 partnered repair centers across the nation,” a GM Korea spokesperson said. "They of

Auto sector to be hit hardest by US tariffs among major S. Korean industries: BOK

Korea's auto industry is expected to suffer the most severe impact among major sectors from the United States' sweeping tariff scheme, the central bank said Thursday. According to a report released by the Bank of Korea (BOK), the auto sector is projected to see a 0.6 percent decline in exports on an annual basis. In terms of export volume to the U.S., the industry would experience a 4 percent decline. The analysis was based on the scenario in which the U.S. President Donald Trump administration maintains the current suspension in implementing reciprocal tariffs on its trading partners, including a 25 percent levy on South Korean goods, while a separate 10 percent baseline tariff and 25 percent levies on steel, aluminum and auto-related products remain in place. The expected impact on the auto industry comes as exports to the U.S. market account for 47 percent of its total shipments as of 2024, while Chinese automakers have a minor presence in the U.S., making it difficult for South Korea to benefit from any competitive advantage. "The impact of price increases following the new tariff po

LG Energy Solution diversifies business portfolios

LG Energy Solution (LGES) said Thursday it is exploring new businesses with high growth potential as part of efforts to respond to slowing global demand for electric vehicles (EVs). Last month, the battery maker announced a joint venture with Derichebourg, a leading French company in the metal waste recycling sector. The two will dismantle and shred end-of-life EV batteries in France and battery scraps from LGES' Polish factory to extract black mass. This material will undergo post-processing to recover key battery components such as lithium, nickel and cobalt, which will be reused in LGES' battery production. The Korean company said the partnership will help it comply with Europe's battery recycling regulations, secure raw materials and boost customer value. In March, LGES signed a memorandum of understanding with Doosan Bobcat to supply cylindrical batteries for electric construction equipment. The two also plan to jointly develop standard battery packs for a range of heavy machinery, targeting the North American market. At the CES 2025 trade show in Las Vegas in January, LGES announced

HYBE establishes Chinese unit to bolster advance of its artists

HYBE, the K-pop company behind BTS, Seventeen and Enhypen, has set up a Chinese subsidiary to support its artists' expansion into the market, the company said Thursday. HYBE China was launched April 2 in Beijing, becoming HYBE's fourth overseas branch after those in Japan, the United States and Latin America. The Beijing-based entity will focus on backing HYBE artists' activities in China, company officials said. Rival K-pop agencies SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment and JYP Entertainment already operate their own Chinese branches. SM and JYP have also debuted China-based idol groups — WayV and Boy Story, respectively. Industry insiders say HYBE's move may reflect growing expectations that China will loosen its tacit ban on South Korean entertainment content, which has been in place for several years. Despite the market's potential, HYBE China is not expected to immediately launch a talent audition program or debut a local K-pop group, according to sources familiar with the matter. The unit is likely to play a more limited role than HYBE's other overseas arms, such as HYBE Japan and HYB
