Samsung SDI, KGM to develop next-gen EV battery packs

Samsung SDI has teamed up with KGM to co-develop next-generation electric vehicle (EV) battery packs featuring high energy density, extended driving range and fast charging, both firms said Tuesday. Under the strategic partnership, they will also develop cutting-edge battery pack technologies using Samsung SDI’s 46-series cylindrical battery cells. Both sides will also collaborate on joint research to develop more sophisticated battery packs in the future. KGM, one of Korea’s mid-tier carmakers, will apply the newly developed battery packs in its upcoming EVs. Samsung SDI said its 46-series cylindrical batteries offer enhanced safety and durability, delivering reliable performance under a wide range of driving conditions. The batteries feature Samsung SDI’s proprietary Silicon Carbon Nanocomposite anodes, which reduce swelling and extend battery lifespan, the company said. It also incorporates a tabless design that reduces internal resistance and optimizes current flow, enhancing high-power output and fast-charging performance. In addition, enhanced thermal management and advanced m

InterviewBAT designer enhances glo HYPER with 'emotional functionality'

To the principal design lead of British American Tobacco (BAT) in the United Kingdom, design is about more than how a heated tobacco device looks. He distills emotion from sensory experiences and etches it into the electronic device, turning it into a pleasing memento for users. With BAT’s flagship heated tobacco brand glo reaching more than 10 million users across 33 global markets since 2024, the company’s principal design lead, Lee Ju-suek, has been working to create a device with broader universal appeal — what he calls an “emotional device.” BAT’s glo was first launched in Japan in 2016, followed by Korea and other markets the following year. Since then, the product has evolved into an amalgam of the company’s latest technologies and its most carefully considered design elements. BAT attributes this evolution to Lee’s design philosophy, which prioritizes consistency of experience over form, creating a design identity that is functional yet warm, minimalist yet distinctive. The most striking example of Lee’s design principles can be found in the dial of the glo HYP

InterviewKorean blood sausage master urges gov't to break export barriers

The government must expand its list of trading partners that allow imports of Korean processed meats to further advance the cuisine’s global reach and popularity, according to the country’s official sundae master. Sundae is a traditional Korean sausage made by stuffing casings with a mixture of blood and other ingredients, such as rice, noodles, vegetables and meat. Yook Kyung-hee, 63, CEO of Seoul-based Heestory Food, has spent the past 15 years promoting sundae — still widely perceived overseas as a low-nutrition street food — through Sundae Silrok, a franchise restaurant brand offering creative, health-focused interpretations of the dish. Designated as the country’s 99th Korean Food Master by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs earlier this month for her expertise in sundae, Yook said globalizing sundae requires coordinated government support rather than relying solely on individual efforts. She said overseas demand for her products is strong, but exports are constrained by restrictions on processed meats tied to health, disease and halal certification requir

Coupang daily user count slips to 14 mil. range after data breach

Coupang's daily active user (DAU) count has fallen to the 14 million range following the e-commerce giant's disclosure of a massive data breach late last month, industry data showed Monday. Coupang's estimated DAU had stood at 14.88 million as of Friday, according to MobileIndex, a data platform operated by industry tracker IGAWorks. The figure marked the first time Coupang's daily user count dropped into the 14 million range since Oct. 25, when it recorded 14.91 million users. Over the roughly three-month period from early October through Friday, Coupang's daily user count fell below 15 million on only three occasions — Oct. 4-6 during the Chuseok holiday period, Oct. 25 and Dec. 19. On Nov. 29, Coupang confirmed that the personal information of 33.7 million customer accounts had been exposed, far exceeding the 4,500 accounts initially reported to authorities on Nov. 20. The number of affected accounts is equivalent to nearly two-thirds of Korea's population. Given that active users of Coupang's Product Commerce division, including its delivery service, reached 24.7 million in the third

Hyundai Motor Group to unveil AI robotics strategy at CES

Hyundai Motor Group will unveil its artificial intelligence (AI)-converged robotics business strategy at CES 2026 — driven by its next-generation all-electric humanoid robot Atlas — the carmaker said Monday. The robot will be demonstrated for the first time at the upcoming exhibition, which runs for four days from Jan. 6 in Las Vegas. Hyundai identifies Atlas as the cornerstone of its software-defined factory (SDF) initiative. In 2022, Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Chung Euisun drew attention at CES by appearing onstage with Boston Dynamics' four-legged robot Spot. The group had previously acquired a controlling stake in the robotics developer for $880 million (1.3 trillion won), positioning the sector as its next major revenue stream. Under the theme “Partnering Human Progress: AI Robotics,” Hyundai will outline its commercialization strategy for AI robots to accelerate their integration into daily life and smart factories at CES 2026. Atlas — also developed by Boston Dynamics — will take center stage at CES 2026. The state-of-the-art humanoid will begin test operation

Petrochemical firms to cut 3.7 mil. tons in NCC capacity through restructuring: minister

Local petrochemical companies plan to voluntarily reduce the combined capacity of their naphtha cracking centers (NCC) by up to 3.7 million tons under far-reaching restructuring measures partly aimed at tackling an industrywide crisis stemming from a global oversupply, the industry minister said Monday. Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan made the remark in a meeting with the chief executive officers of local petrochemical companies, also noting that all 16 major petrochemical firms here have submitted their initial business restructuring plans. Under their restructuring plans, the companies plan to reduce their NCC capacity by 2.7 million to 3.7 million tons, which would account for 18-25 percent of the country's total NCC capacity, Kim said. Kim vowed to "swiftly" devise a support package for the petrochemical sector's self-rescue plan, including tax incentives, research and development support, and the streamlining of regulations. It will also include support for a transition to high-value and eco-friendly products. In August, the government unveiled its three principles for helping the a

LG chairman stresses departure from past success formula

LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo delivered his New Year’s message on Monday, stressing the need for prioritization and focus as the group faces a pivotal moment in shaping its future. In a video message sent to 250,000 LG Group employees across the world, Koo said the paradigm of technology and rules of competition are rapidly changing, while customer expectations continue to rise. To live up to the expectations, he said, the group must move beyond previous formulas for success and make a leap through new forms of innovation. “Innovation is not only about improving the lives of today’s customers but also about creating value that future customers will need,” Koo said. “This would require changes in the group’s thinking and behavior, with prioritization and focus serving as the starting point.” He noted that LG must first “prioritize a core value that truly resonates with customers,” adding that “only by clearly defining a non-negotiable core value can the group set the direction for innovation and unite its efforts.” Koo continued, urging LG employees to push themselv
