'No iPhone without Samsung patents'

By Kim Yoo-chulShin Jong-kyunSamsung Electronics presidentThe chief executive of Samsung Electronics has expressed confidence about the ongoing patent battle with Apple, saying that no smartpohone can exist without patents from Korea’s technology giants.``The truth never lies. Without Samsung-owned wireless patents, it’s impossible for the Cupertino-based Apple to produce its handsets,’’ said Samsung’s mobile chief Shin Jong-kyun in a brief meeting with local reporters on his way to the company’s main office in downtown Seoul, Wednesday.``As you know, Samsung is very strong in terms of portfolios of wireless patents,’’ the executive added. The remarks come after the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) decided to review an earlier ruling that Apple didn’t infringe four patents of Samsung Electronics in its mobile devices including the iPhone and iPad.The USITC decision means Samsung grabbed the chance to persuade judges that Apple’s i-branded products infringed on Samsung-owned wireless patents. Apple ruling to be reviewed

By Kim Yoo-chulITC building in WashingtonThe U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) decided Tuesday (KST) to review an earlier decision that Apple didn’t infringe on four patents held by Samsung in its mobile devices. A preliminary ruling in September by an ITC administrative judge found that Apple hadn’t violated any of the four patents at issue. Two of them were considered ``standards essential,’’ meaning they should be licensed out to competitors.``The ITC has determined to review the initial determination issued by the presiding administrative law judge on Sept. 14, 2012. The commission requests certain briefing from the parties on the issues under review. The commission also requests briefing from the parties and the public on the issues of remedy, the public interest and bonding,’’ the commission said. It seems uncertain whether the USITC will rule differently from September as a complete overturn through a re-evaluation isn’t common, said patent experts. ``Receiving a judgment at the USITC means a lot in itself and has a big impact,

Will Judge Koh rule on flawed Apple verdict?

Samsung targets foreman Hogan  U.S. Judge KohBy Kim Yoo-chulCan U.S. Federal Judge Luch Koh go ahead and rule on a verdict by a “flawed jury” on Dec. 6? Legal experts argue against Judge Koh belatedly calling the jury’s decision flawed. It would be tantamount to admitting to a mistake. This is not about the content of the $1 billion verdict against Samsung but more about the procedure. The judge has promised she will reexamine alleged misconduct by jury foreman Velvin Hogan. In an interesting twist, Samsung submitted to Koh a request to have the ruling nullified, citing the foreman’s failure to come clean about himself during the jury selection process. The request was filed on Nov. 9 and the copy of the 27-page document was obtained by The Korea Times. ``As post-trial developments have made clear, jury foreman Velvin Hogan deliberately concealed information about his prior litigation experience in response to this Court’s direct questioning about that subject. Had he answered truthfully, Samsung could have stricken him and prevented his introdu

By Kim Yoo-chulSamsung Display, the display arm of Samsung Group, has decided to invest up to 2 trillion won or some $1.8 billion to boost the output of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screens, according to Samsung officials. The officials said that the decision was mainly aimed at actively responding to the explosive demand for brighter screens. To that end, the company will not build a new factory but extend the space to produce more small- and mid-sized OLEDs at its current factory in the provincial city of Asan, South Chungcheong Province, the officials said, Wednesday.Despite the sluggish demand for electronic devices such as televisions and home appliances amid the prolonged recession in Europe and the weak economic recovery in the United States, the display unit is receiving more orders for those screens from Samsung Electronics.``Samsung Display will invest as much as 2 trillion won for more OLED display outputs to push ahead with its plan to start mass production of displays using plastic rather than glass, a move that will make mobile devices lighter, flexible and unbreak
