Hyundai Mipo wins $300 million orders

By Kim Yoo-chulHyundai Mipo Dockyard, an affiliate of Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the nation’s largest shipbuilder, said Thursday that it recently won combined orders worth $300 million to build 10 vessel.The firm said that it will deliver the ships to owners in Europe by 2016.“Most recently, CEO Choi Won-kil signed a deal with d’Amico to build two product carriers of 50,000 tons each in Rome and Italy. We are going to use advanced shipbuilding technologies to increase efficiency and cut costs,” said a company spokesman.In March, Mipo also won massive deals to build four vessels of 38,000 tons each, another 50,000-ton vessel and three 57,000 ton bulkers.Hyundai Mipo said earlier it is targeting orders worth $3.2 billion this year and aims to log 3.6 trillion won in sales. The shipbuilder has won deals valued at $2.1 billion so far this year to build 64 ships.

Samsung sets up patent firm in US

By Kim Yoo-chulSamsung Display said Thursday it established a company specializing in trading and developing patents in the United States in March.The display-making affiliate of Samsung Group said it invested $25 million to launch Intellectual Keystone Technology (IKT) in Washington D.C. in a move to beef up its patent-related business. The firm owns 100 percent of IKT.This is the first time the Korean conglomerate has set up an independent body only for patents, said Samsung officials.“Samsung recently established IKT. SDS expands financial support for partners

By Kim Yoo-chulSamsung SDS is stepping up efforts to pursue “shared growth” with local partners and contractors by expanding financial support and sharing its patents.The company Thursday announced its plan to expand financial support to its suppliers to 4.5 billion won to ensure balanced growth between large firms and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).“SDS is helping our local partners do business with greater financial stability. We’ve recently expanded the ‘mutual growth fund’ to 4.5 billion won to help them get money at lower rates,” said company spokeswoman Kim Mi-ri.She added the Seoul-headquartered outfit is also sharing some SDS-owned patents with local partners. Specifically, partners can get full access to 32 SDS-developed patents without paying royalties. “SDS is running various educational programs to help our partners see qualified corporate growth,” Kim said. Samsung to purchase 10% stake in Pantech

By Kim Yoo-chulPark Byeong-yeopPantech Vice ChairmanSamsung Electronics, the world's largest smartphone maker, said Wednesday that it will invest 53 billion won or some $48 million to acquire a 10 percent stake in Pantech, Korea’s number three mobile phone manufacturer.“Samsung Electronics accepted Pantech Vice Chairman Park Byeong-yeop’s business proposal,” said a spokesman for Samsung Electronics.The investment will make Samsung Electronics Pantech’s third-largest shareholder behind Qualcomm with 11.96 percent and the Korea Development Bank with 11.81 percent.The spokesman said the deal aims to protect Samsung’s clients for components.Pantech is buying semiconductors, displays and other components for use in its popular Vega-branded smartphones from Samsung’s key affiliates including Samsung SDI and Samsung Electronics.Last year, Pantech bought 235 billion won worth of Samsung parts.
