Koreans get more calories from alcoholic beverages

By Kim Se-jeong The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said Sunday that the calories Koreans get through alcohol consumption have jumped two-and-a-half times in 16 years.According to the center’s survey, Koreans’ consumption of alcoholic beverages grew both in quantity and calories from 1998 to 2014.In 1998, people drank the equivalent of 48.9 grams of alcoholic beverages per day, but the figure grew by 2.6 times to 124.7 grams in 2014. In terms of calories, it also rose by 2.5 times from 39.3 kilocalories (kcal) to 100 kcal during the same period.Almost 6,000 individuals took part in the annual survey.Oh Kyung-won, one of the survey authors, said the consumption increase may have partly resulted from a growing variety of alcoholic beverages in the market. “Take beer for example. With Korean market more open to imported goods, people have more options than before, and that seems to encourage people to drink more,” Oh said. She also said more and more people are enjoying lower-strength alcohol, such as wine and makgeolli rather tha

BIFF head faces scrutiny

By Kim Se-jeong The rift between the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) and the authorities is deepening, with the city government asking prosecutors to investigate the head of the BIFF secretariat. The secretariat and film industry insiders claim the investigation is retaliation against the secretariat, which pushed ahead with screening a documentary about the Sewol ferry and the government’s poor response to the disaster during last year’s festival.According to the Busan Metropolitan Government, Tuesday, it requested the prosecution investigate Lee Yong-kwan, co-executive director of the secretariat, and two other officials, Friday, over allegations that they had mismanaged money.  The city’s move follows a request from the Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI), which conducted a special audit of the secretariat earlier this year. Previously, the city government, which provides more than 50 billion won for BIFF, one of Asia’s biggest film festivals, conducted the audit every year. The BAI said it discovered grave faults in the secretariat’s

Lecturers' job security remain unclear

By Kim Se-jeong The government and the ruling Saenuri Party are moving to delay implementing a controversial law intended to improve job security for almost 700,000 part-time lecturers at colleges and universities. This is the third attempt to delay the law which was originally passed by the National Assembly in 2011 and was supposed to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2016. The party says the delay is inevitable because it is feared that the law will cause mass contract termination of such lecturers due to increased financial burdens on the institutions.“It is expected that the law will make life more difficult for teachers who are paid hourly, if implemented as it is,” said Rep. Kang Eun-hee of the ruling party, who recently proposed delaying the bill. “The government and universities need more time to review the law and come up with measures so that as many lecturers as possible can benefit from it.”If passed at the National Assembly’s extraordinary session, the implementation of the law will be put off until 2018.The law was passed in 2011 to provide mo
