Samsung mulls new chip packaging plant in Gwangju

Samsung Electronics is doing a feasibility study on establishing a semiconductor packaging plant in the southwestern city of Gwangju, government and industry officials said Wednesday, noting that plans will likely be announced during a presidential meeting later this month. According to officials, Samsung Electronics is now reviewing its investment plan for the new semiconductor packaging plant to address growing memory chip demands and in response to President Lee Jae Myung's push for more balanced regional development. If the plan is finalized, the facility is expected to be responsible for advanced semiconductor packaging for Samsung Electronics' latest chips, including high-bandwidth memory (HBM). Packaging, which comes after the fabrication process in semiconductor manufacturing, was traditionally regarded as a lower-value, less technologically demanding stage, compared with front-end wafer processing, where ultrafine circuits are etched onto wafers using highly sophisticated equipment. However, as artificial intelligence semiconductors become increasingly advanced, the ability to

FORUM Integration into local ecosystem key to Korean biz's global sustainability: panelists

Korea's top business leaders from Hanwha, SK and other major companies highlighted deeper integration into local ecosystems as a key factor in helping Korean firms evolve from export-driven businesses to sustainable global players, sharing their experiences and success stories at The Korea Times Forum "Made in Korea: Global and AI enablement," co-hosted by GR Korea on Tuesday. During Session 1 of the forum, Hanwha Ocean Head of Management Support Office Jung In-sub, SK Group Head of Research Park Suk-jung, PTC Korea General Manager Alex Kim and S4 Capital Chairman Sir Martin Sorrell each discussed strategies to help Korean firms deepen their presence in overseas markets. The discussion was moderated by American Chamber of Commerce in Korea Chairman James Kim. “When Hanwha Ocean was launched in 2023, we believed the biggest risk facing the company was the cyclical nature of the shipbuilding industry,” Jung said. “As we considered how to overcome that challenge, we saw an opportunity in the weakening competitiveness of the U.S. shipbuilding sector and decided to enter the market. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang shares 'somaek' with Korea's top tycoons amid partnership talks

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang visited Seoul on Friday, seven months after making headlines with a fried chicken gathering with the heads of Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor Group that was followed by a large-scale Nvidia artificial intelligence (AI) accelerator supply across Korea. This time, his visit is set to focus on partnerships with a broader range of Korean firms in AI applications, including robotics, physical AI, infrastructure and gaming. In addition to his business engagements, Huang is also scheduled to make a television appearance and throw a ceremonial first pitch at a baseball game, reflecting his celebritylike popularity here. Huang dined with some of Korea's top business leaders at Hyungnim Jeoyo, a casual pork belly barbecue restaurant near Hongik University in western Seoul, hours after his arrival in the country. He shared a table with SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo and Naver Chairman of the Board Lee Hae-jin. Officials from Nvidia also joined the gathering. Cooling design emerges as battleground for next-gen AI memory

Chip designs aimed at keeping artificial intelligence (AI) accelerators cool are emerging as a new battleground for memory makers, with Samsung Electronics and SK hynix each revealing heat dissipation structures for their upcoming high-bandwidth memory (HBM) products. The memory makers are increasing stacks and data transfer speed for HBMs to meet growing demands for AI computing performance, but facing intensified thermal management challenges. Starting with the eighth-generation HBM5, Samsung Electronics and SK hynix plan to introduce new heat-dissipation technologies to reduce heat at the chip level, improving system reliability and helping data center operators lower total cost of ownership. During COMPUTEX 2026 in Taiwan earlier this week, Samsung Electronics unveiled a mock-up of its HBM5 chip. “Thermal management is becoming a critical factor for next-generation memory as AI systems grow increasingly powerful and densely integrated, requiring advances in not only memory performance but also heat dissipation,” said Song Jai-hyuk, president and chief technology officer of Samsu

Samsung supports SMEs with smart factory solutions

Samsung Electronics has been empowering small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Korea through its Smart Factory program, sharing its manufacturing expertise and know-how with more than 3,600 companies over the past decade. Under the goal of narrowing the gap between large companies and SMEs and revitalizing the industrial ecosystem, Samsung Electronics has been operating the program since 2015 as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative. The program initially started as an effort to help SMEs in North Gyeongsang Province automate their manufacturing processes, but has since expanded into the Smart Factory 2.0 phase, broadening its scope to include market development, workforce training and technical support. Since 2023, Samsung Electronics has also been operating Smart Factory 3.0, which also supports artificial intelligence (AI)- and data-driven manufacturing upgrades. Through the 3.0 program, the company invested 30 billion won over the past three years and is currently working with 10 municipalities across the country. A key feature of the program is that
