KBO to discuss 10th team

By Jung Min-ho The Korea Baseball Organization’s (KBO) board of directors is expected to hash out key issues today such as allowing new clubs into its fold. The two pending agendas are whether to allow the NC Dino’s to join the Korean baseball league’s first division in 2013 and whether to create a 10th professional team. Since the results of the meeting will set an important direction for KBO, it has drawn extensive attentions from fans and related-organizations. “We want the KBO to take a clear stance on the unresolved issues as soon as possible,” said Park Chung-sik, executive director of the Korea professional baseball players association. At the last meeting on April 10, the directors were split over the issues. The president of Lotte Giants explicitly expressed concerns over adding another team to the league saying the plan was made in a hurry and should be re-evaluated through thorough research, while SK Wyverns President Shin Young-chul endorsed the idea. Those opposing the plan have faced vehement reactions from fans and related-organizations for it since t

Son adds another bronze in World Cup

By Jung Min-ho Korean rhythmic gymnast Son Yeon-jae won another bronze medal for her performance in the ribbon event in the World Cup in Sofia, Saturday. “I tried my best to concentrate over and over to offset the mistakes that I made in the clubs section. After my ribbon show I thought this was nicely demonstrated,” Son said. “I will do my best at the Olympic Games.” With the nation’s first bronze medal she earned at the World Cup series in the hoops last Sunday, Son left an indelible mark for Korea’s rhythmic gymnastics by adding a second one. On Friday, the 17-year-old came seventh, earning a total of 109,800 points; 27,775 in the hoops, 26,550 with the ball, 27,750 in the clubs, and 27,725 with the ribbon, which put her into the final round. The next day at the final, she failed to reach a medal in the hoops with 27,700 points ranking her fourth, followed by ranking seventh in the clubs with 24,900 points. However, she finally grabbed a medal with 27,300 points in the ribbon along with Ukraine’s Ganna Rizatdinova. Son’s coach Jelena Lipyordova said she was glad t

By Jung Min-ho Olympic champion Kim Yu-na will make a long-awaited appearance on ice in “E1 All That Skate Spring 2012,” scheduled from May 4 to 6 in Seoul. It’s her first appearance in nine-months. “I feel nervous to perform after the long break, but I have trained hard for the show with other participants. Age is no barrier to ‘Lion King‘

By Jung Min-ho Although the K-League’s all-time top scorer Lee Dong-gook recently turned 33, it seems like his career still has not reached its pinnacle. He has 121 goals in 287 K-League appearances “I think I still have room for improvement. It’s not appropriate for a footballer to say when his finest hour is, but he should always prepare for it by maintaining his best form and conditions.” Lee said in an interview with fifa.com The Jeonbuk Motors striker is currently ranked second for the most goals this season with six, tied with Ianis Zicu of the Pohang Steelers, Suwon Bluewings’ Dzenan Radoncic, and FC Seoul’s Dejan Damjanovic. Everton Santos of Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma leads with seven. Lee is the only Korean player among the top six scorers. He got off to a good start scoring twice in his team’s season opener against Seongnam on March 3 and has a scoring average of .67 this year. The Motors are currently fifth in the table on 17 points from 10 games. His last goal was against Gyeongnam FC on April 8. After Kim Jung-woo opened the scoring at the end of the first hal

Park displays subpar performance

By Jung Min-ho In his first appearance in 57 days, Park Ji-sung looked off the pace in the Manchester derby Tuesday (Korean time), unable prevent his side losing the match and possibly the English Premier League title, too. In United’s 1-0 defeat to cross-city rivals City, the 31-year-old midfielder attempted to show he is still capable of contributing to the first team after sitting on the bench for the past seven games. But his performance was lackluster. Park started the match, deployed in the center of midfield rather than his more familiar wide position. It seems he was there to try and mark the influential Yaya Toure but was clearly outperformed by his counterpart who effectively blocked United’s offense. City captain Vincent Kompany knocked out what little wind was in the Red Devils’ sails with a header late in the first half for the game’s only goal. Fans and media slammed Ferguson’s poor strategy and team selection, targeting Park’s contribution. “Park couldn’t race off fast enough,” British daily The Independent said of the Korean’s subsitution, despite

Ex-overseas players wow fans

By Jung Min-ho There are reasons galore to visit baseball stadiums this season, but seeing star players’ perform in person is definitely one of them. With their credentials earned overseas, Kim Tae-kyun, Lee Seung-yeop, and Park Chan-ho stand out more than others. Since their return home following careers abroad last month, fans have flocked to the stadiums with high expectations. So far, the results have been better than anticipated. Slugger Kim Tae-kyun, who has come back to the domestic league after a stint in Japan after signing the most lucrative one-year contract in KBO history with the Hanwha Eagles, is proving he is worth the money. As of Tuesday, he was first in the league for hits and batting average with 29 and .46 respectively. In Sunday’s game with the Nexen Heroes he had 2 hits and 1 home run with .667 batting average, leading his team to victory.

KBO on pace to break spectator record

By Jung Min-ho Korean baseball fans heading to stadiums reached the million-mark in just 65 games Sunday, the fastest in local history, beating the previous 79 games in 1995. As popularity for the sports grows, the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) has set the goal of 7.1 million spectators from 532 games by the end of the season. “This is the fastest record in history. If we can maintain this pace until the end of the season, we can possibly reach 8 million,” Yoo Byung-suk, a KBO public relations official said. “More realistically, however, our goal is to surpass 7 million this year.” Korean baseball hit a new record with 6.8 million going to ballparks last year. The current pace gives an average of over 15,000 visitors per game, a 14 percent increase from the same time last year. “Obviously, Korean baseball is in a good way,” Yoo said. “We are going to try our best to maintain its popularity with all our efforts.” There are a number of reasons for the sport’s popularity this season but star players from overseas are regarded as one of the biggest contributing

‘Park wants to leave England‘s Arsenal‘

By Jung Min-ho Park Chu-young may well leave Arsenal after having warmed the Arsenal’s bench for too long. Football columnist Jamie Sanderson wrote Wednesday that the 26-year-old forward “has already told coaching staff he wants to leave,” in an article on British Telecom’s football website, lifesapitch.co.uk. Concerns and speculation over Park’s decision on whether he will stay with the North London team have spread as he has has spent most of his time among the substitutes since the “three million pound panic buy” on Aug. 30, 2011. When the Gunners signed the forward last summer, manager Arsene Wenger said “We are delighted to have signed Ju. He will add true quality to our attacking forces and will be a valuable addition to the squad,” indicating the team would fully utilize the former Korea captain. However, he has appeared in only six games scoring once in all competitions this season, despite high expectation from fans here. “The support from fellow strikers Chamakh and Park Chu-Young has been pitiful,” Sanderson said. “Wenger’s attempts to supplement the forwa

Korea optimistic about Olympic football draw

By Jung Min-ho Korea have been drawn with Mexico, Switzerland and Gabon for the London Olympics football competition is considered reasonably good. But the manager of Korea’s U-23 team was cautious. “I think we should be well-prepared for all three teams,” said Hong Myung-bo. Mexico is the top-ranked among qualifiers from Asia, Africa, Oceania, and their CONCACAF region, named as one of four seeded nations for the men’s tournament. Manchester United forward Javier Hernández, CONCACAF Gold Cup top scorer in 2011, is a lethal weapon the Mexico team could deploy. “Recently, I had the chance to see Mexico play. The team has exceptional skills and speed, which we have to be ready for.” Hong said. History at the Summer Games indicates that the Korean team is favored. Getting off to a good start by defeating Mexico 5-3 at the London Olympics in 1948, the Korean team beat the Central Americans once again 1-0 in Athens in 2004. The two sides drew in Atlanta in 1996, giving Korea reasons to be optimistic. Switzerland were silver medalists in 1924, but more re
