Lee hits two-run blast to give Lions win

By Jung Min-ho Boosted by Lee Seung-yeop’s two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning, the Samsung Lions defeated the SK Wyverns 3-1 Wednesday night to get a head start in the first game of the best-of-seven Korean Series. At the Daegu Baseball Stadium packed with 10,000 home fans, the defending champions responded aggressively to the Wyverns’ challenge with slugger Lee’s blast, which seemed a repeat of what he did 10 years ago in the Korean Series against the LG Twins. Bae Young-seob extended the lead by making a two-base hit to allow Kang Myung-goo from second base to reach the home plate in the seventh inning. With closing pitcher Oh Seung-whan preserving the shutout to the end, the Lions celebrated a night victory. “I’m glad that I hit the winning home run,” Lee said. “I thought it was critical to get the first run for a victory. And when I hit the unexpected home run, I became sure about our win.” The Wyverns saw hope in second baseman Jeong Keun-woo, the Most Valuable Player of the playoffs’ second round, touched home base thanks to Lee Ho-joon’s hit in

Kim Yu-na reunites with former coaches

By Jung Min-ho Olympic figure skating champion Kim Yu-na has rehired two former coaches. Shin Hea-sook and Ryu Jong-hyun will take charge of helping the 22-year-old to return to the competitive skating starting with the 2013 World Figure Skating Championships in March. Ryu worked with Kim when she started skating at the age of seven until she was 10. Shin then coached her between 10 and 12. Kim has trained by herself for the past few months after her contract with former coach Peter Oppergard ended last year “I still have a good sense of techniques like jumping. But I’m still concerned about my performance after a one-year break,” Kim said at a press conference Wednesday. “The two coaches have been with me through my 16-year career. So, I believe training with them will be greatly helpful to me.” Kim hasn’t participated in competitive events since the world championships in April last year, instead featuring in star-studded ice shows. Shin was on the Korean national team at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics. Since moving to coaching in 1984, Shin has trained many fi

Lions, Wyverns to play 3rd straight Korean Series

By Jung Min-ho The SK Wyverns are into the Korean Series where they will meet defending champions the Samsung Lions in the best-of-seven season series starting today at the Daegu Baseball Stadium. The Wyverns defeated the Lotte Giants 6-3 in Game 5 of the second playoff round Monday to reach the season finale. The two rivals will face off for the third consecutive time in the Korea Baseball Organization’s (KBO) title round. Last year, the Lions were victorious in five games after the Wyverns swept the previous series to claim the title. “I knew the Wyverns would advance to the Korean Series,” Lions manager Ryu Joong-il said Tuesday. “We have prepared for the game with the proper training and rest for the past 20 days, and we are very confident in repeating last year’s victory.” The Lions are the favorites to add a second championship in three years. After wrapping up the regular season top of the standings with 80 wins, 51 losses and two draws, the Daegu-based club advanced directly to the series, while the Wyverns had to play five games against the Giants to get the

Star gymnast caught in nasty fight between agency, KGA

By Jung Min-ho Korea’s star rhythmic gymnast Son Yeon-jae has found herself caught in a power struggle between her agency, IB Sport, and the Korea Gymnastic Association (KGA). Son, who finished an unprecedented fifth in the London Olympics, saw her long-trusted mentor Kim Ji-hee has tendered her resignation from the KGA. The friction began over whether Son should attend the Serie A Championships scheduled for Nov. 3. The KGA ruled that she should not attend the competition and the gymnast only learned of the decision at Incheon International Airport. When she tried to check in for her flight, she was told that the ticket, supplied by the Italian organizers had been cancelled after the KGA informed them that Son would not be competing. Son was not available for comment. “As coach, I have felt limitations in controlling the athletes’ training and discipline,” Kim was quoted as saying by Sports Chosun. “And I felt responsible (for it).” The KGA said that it decided not to allow Son’s participation in Serie A Championships due to concerns over an ankle injury

Who will win Korean Series spot?

By Jung Min-ho The SK Wyverns and Lotte Giants will have a final showdown for a spot in the final of the Korean Series. The winner of the game will face the Samsung Lions to see who is No. 1 in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). The Giants’ bid to win is now back to square one at 2-2 in the best-of-five series as the Wyverns beat them 2-1, Saturday. The Wyverns second baseman Jeong Keun-woo’s four hits and two runs in four at-bats crashed the Giants’ hopes for a victory in four games. The Wyverns, which wrapped up the regular season with the least steals at 104, surprised the Giants with nine steals in the past four games, while the Busan-based team only had two. Given that three games out of four separated the winner and loser by only one run, Giants catcher Kang Min-ho’s role to stop the nimble-footed Wyvern players’ steal will be critical to reach the final. The last time the Giants played in the Korean Series was in 1999. The two ace pitchers — SK’s Kim Kwang-hyun and Lotte’s Shane Youman who are both southpaws — will take the mound as starters at Mu

Road FC chief lashes out at UFC for being ‘cheap’

By Jung Min-ho Road Fighting Championship President Jung Mun-hong said Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is “cheap” for taking domestic talent without providing appropriate compensation to the organizations where the fighters honed their skills. During a recent interview with The Korea Times, Jung expressed his frustration over losing former Road FC bantamweight champion Kang Kyung-ho to UFC after he signed a contract with the world’s biggest mixed martial arts (MMA) organization in July. The 25-year-old won the Korean outfit’s inaugural title. “Do you know how much of our resources we spend to discover and develop talent? It was a great loss for us,” Jung said. “However, Kang really wanted to go, so I let him, even though UFC didn’t pay anything to our organization.” Jung said the harsh logic of capitalism is pervasive in the sport where UFC dominates noting, “They use their reputation to recruit talent, while the talent-builders like us get nothing.” Korea has produced many top-class fighters such as Kim Dong-hyun and Jung Chan-sung, proving it has a wealth of

Korea defeated by 10-man Iran

By Jung Min-ho While the nation’s footballers failed to find Iran’s net, Javad Nekounam didn’t miss his chance. He capitalized on a poor clearance by the Korean defense to smash home a 76th minute winner to give 10-man Iran a 1-0 victory Wednesday. Following its success at the Azadi Stadium, Iran now has seven points, tied with Korea at the top of Asian World Cup Qualifying Group A, although the Koreans are ahead on goal difference. “I feel bad that we couldn’t break the Tehran jinx, and I am the one responsible for the bad result, not the players,” manager Choi Kang-hee said. “But we are still top of the Group A standings and there are many home games. We will be fully prepared for them.” With 100,000 fanatical supporters cheering on the home side, Korea seemed shaky from the start, failing to deliver effective passes to the front. Meanwhile, the Iranians pressured the visitors, taking advantage of the fans’ boos and catcalls directed at the visitors. Midfielder Kim Bo-kyung could have silenced the crowd but his 29th-minute header hit the crossbar. And Korea mi

Local talent to ignite F1 success in Korea

By Jung Min-ho YEONGAM,, South Jeolla Province – Caterham Formula One team boss Tony Fernandes advised the Korean Grand Prix organizers Sunday to invest in developing local talent for long-term success here. “You have to invest in Korean talent. Spain is a great example. When (Fernando) Alonso became world champion, Spain became F1 crazy. You need a local talent. That will change Yeongam forever,” the 48-year-old said in an interview with The Korea Times. “Every sport needs a stage. The best way to spark popularity is to own a team that has developments all the way from go-karting and start getting young Korean kids into driving. Korea definitely can have a champion and that will change sponsors and the TV audience.” For a sport that hasn’t taken root here, Korea needs a star like football player Park Ji-sung in F1. The country must have a well-organized foundation to make that happen, Fernandes said. Fernandes, also CEO of AirAisia owns the English Premier League team Queens Park Ranger where Park currently plays. “Koreans are very nationalistic. But there is

It was a fantastic race,” said Vettel, who also triumphed in his last two events in Singapore and Japan. “The foundation was to have a good start. I wasn’t sure as I was starting on the dirty side, but I had a reasonable start and a good lunch. Mark had a bit of slip so I could get side-by-side and had a good exit after the third corner.” On the back of his fourth victory of the year, Vettel overtook Alonso at the top of the Formula One championship standings by six points with four races remaining to position him to possibly become the third driver in history to win three straight titles. “The boys have been flat out each night, working very hard
