Will China ask for Samsung's investment during chairman's visit?

Samsung Electronics Executive Chairman Lee Jae-yong is expected to meet with key Chinese business partners during his visit to Beijing to attend the China Development Forum (CDF), stoking speculation over whether Beijing will push for fresh investment in the company’s chip operations, particularly NAND flash memory, in China. According to industry officials, Lee is attending CDF, which opened at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing Sunday for a two-day run. After finishing the official forum schedule, he is expected to stay in China for a few more days to review local business operations and meet with heads of partner companies. His trip comes as Beijing is stepping up efforts to court foreign investment from global tech businesses. This year’s CDF brings together 88 global executives, including Lee, Apple CEO Tim Cook and SK hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung, under the theme “China in its 15th Five-Year Plan Period: Advancing High-Quality Development and Creating New Opportunities Together.” The forum has long served as a key platform for Chinese policymakers and senior officials to eng

Two of Naver’s services made the top 50 list in the gen AI mobile apps category, with Papago coming in 43rd and its camera app Snow close behind at 48th, ranked by monthly active users. Korea says LNG supply stable despite Middle East risks

Cheong Wa Dae said Friday that Korea’s natural gas supply remains stable despite rising concerns over potential disruptions to Qatari liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports due to heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. In a press notice, the presidential office said LNG imports from Qatar account for about 14 percent of the country’s total this year, adding that alternative sources are available to ensure stable supply. “There are no issues with gas supply,” it said. According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources, some replacement volumes have already been secured, with additional long-term supplies arranged from the United States, Southeast Asia and Australia. The ministry also assured that it has sufficient stockpiling capacity, noting that while the legally mandated reserve is about nine days’ worth, actual holdings far exceed that level. The remarks came after QatarEnergy, the state-run energy firm, warned it could declare force majeure on long-term supply contracts with countries including Korea following attacks on major LNG facilities. Snowflake launches desktop AI agent for enterprise workflows

U.S.-based software company Snowflake launched Project SnowWork, an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant designed to automate enterprise workflows, in a research preview on Thursday, marking the latest step in its push to bring agentic enterprise AI directly to business users’ desktops. “The key insight (of the platform) is we will be introducing ‘profiles’ … There is a profile for product managers, sales leaders and finance. And it personalizes every enterprise context to that specific role with the right data, right skills and right insights,” Christian Kleinerman, the company’s executive vice president of product, said during a media event in Seoul's Jung District. “We are incredibly excited to work with customers to shape what we think is the future of work and the future of the agentic enterprise.” Project SnowWork allows business users to request tasks in natural language and have AI autonomously plan and execute multi-step workflows — from data analysis to report writing and presentation generation. By combining multi-step task execution, persona-specific ski

Upstage deepens partnership with AMD to power sovereign AI push

Upstage is expanding its partnership with the U.S. chip giant AMD to accelerate next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) model development and advance Korea’s sovereign AI ecosystem. The company announced that the two have agreed to expand their strategic collaboration following a meeting Thursday between its CEO Kim Sung-hoon and AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su in central Seoul. During the meeting, the two heads discussed a range of collaboration opportunities to drive AI innovation across the region. As part of this partnership, Upstage will immediately begin deploying AMD’s Instinct MI355 graphics processing unit (GPUs) supported by a multiphase road map over the next year. The company said it plans to use the chips to develop and scale up its large language model, called Solar, and AI-powered document processing engines designed to transform enterprise workflows. "AMD is a cornerstone of global AI computing infrastructure, and this collaboration will be instrumental in both advancing our proprietary Solar LLMs and building Korea's sovereign AI model," Kim said. Samsung Display CEO named SID fellow

Samsung Display CEO Yi Chung has been named a fellow of the Society for Information Display (SID), one of the highest honors in the global display industry, the company said Thursday. SID, widely regarded as the world’s most prestigious academic organization in the display sector, awards fellow status to members who have made outstanding and widely recognized engineering or scientific contributions to the display field. The number of fellows selected each year is traditionally limited to approximately 0.1 percent of the society’s total membership. “For pioneering the world's first foldable OLED displays and multiple other advances in OLED display technology, and for leadership in advancing display ecosystems toward energy efficiency and environmental sustainability,” SID said. Yi, who joined Samsung in 1992 and holds a PhD in chemical engineering from Pohang University of Science and Technology, has played a key role in advancing the company’s display technologies. New KHNP CEO vows stronger global push

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has appointed Kim Hoe-chun as its 11th president and CEO, the company said Wednesday, as the new chief pledged to accelerate its global expansion in the nuclear power sector. At his inauguration ceremony held at the company’s headquarters in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, Kim underscored the need for KHNP to take a leading role in the international nuclear energy market, calling on employees to move forward together “with the spirit of riding the wind and breaking through the waves.” “We stand at a turning point in the energy industry. Musinsa enforces zero-tolerance policy on fake labels

Fashion platform operator Musinsa is doubling down on its crackdown on fake labels and misleading product claims, warning of zero tolerance and permanent bans for any partner brands found violating the rules. Fraudulent relabeling, a scheme where low-cost goods are relabeled and sold as higher-quality or original designs at a higher cost, has been a chronic issue in the fashion industry, as most distributors have the tendency to downplay the problem. However, Musinsa is moving in the opposite direction, announcing it will “respond more decisively” on the issue on its official blog last week. The company recently launched an investigation after customer inquiries raised suspicions that certain partner brands had been selling relabeled low-cost products despite previously claiming to produce items in-house. The shopping platforms, including major players like W Concept, Ably and 29CM, have long struggled to inspect products before sale, citing the logistical difficulty of vetting every product from third-party sellers. However, a more serious concern lies in how platforms respond once m

LG bets on AI data center, ESS as future growth driver

LG Group is strengthening its bet on artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, anchoring future growth in AI data centers and energy storage systems (ESS) and unifying affiliate capabilities under its “One LG” strategy. The strategy integrates capabilities across affiliates to deliver end-to-end solutions for AI data centers. Under this framework, LG Electronics provides heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, LG Energy Solution supplies power infrastructure such as uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems and ESS, while LG Uplus and LG CNS handle data center design, construction and operations. “Technologies and the rules of competition are changing, while customer expectations are rising,” LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo said in his New Year’s message, underscoring the strategy. “We must move beyond the formulas of past success and leap toward new innovation.” The group’s push comes as the ongoing boom in AI data centers — especially in the United States — rapidly drives up electricity demand and turns grid stability into a critical constraint
