Korean court dismisses sex slavery compensation case against Japan

Lee Yong-soo, a victim of Japan's wartime sex slavery, speaks in front of the Seoul Central District Court in Seoul, Wednesday, after the court dismissed a case filed by her and other victims seeking compensation for their suffering from the Japanese government. YonhapCourt recognizes Japan's 'sovereign immunity'By Bahk Eun-jiA local court recognized Japan's “sovereign immunity” Wednesday and dismissed a claim for compensation filed by 20 former victims of sex slavery against the Japanese government. The decision is seen as a defeat for all such victims as it could thwart their bids to hold Tokyo accountable for their suffering under its war crimesIt also contradicts an earlier ruling in January by a different judge at the same district court that held Japan accountable for the wartime atrocities and ordered it to make financial reparations of 100 million won ($89,490) to each of the 12 plaintiffs in the case.It is yet to be seen how these contrasting decisions will affect Seoul-Tokyo ties, which have dropped to the lowest level over a series of historical issues, with th

YonhapBy Bahk Eun-jiThe country's farming communities have been struggling with labor shortages and cost increases brought on by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, as they are unable to hire sufficient foreign workers. Before the coronavirus outbreak, many farmers relied on seasonal workers from abroad, mainly Southeast Asia. Migrant workers entering on a C-4 visa have been allowed up to 90 days of employment here, usually at farms during the busy season when extra help is needed. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs estimates that rural manpower demand from April to June accounts for about 40 percent of the workforce demand for the entire year.Migrant workers have been a great help to farming villages where labor is scarce due to the aging population. The average pay of a foreign worker is reportedly about 80 percent of that of a Korean worker.According to the Ministry of Justice, it received requests from 37 local governments this year to

YonhapBy Bahk Eun-jiThe country's COVID-19 vaccination program is facing another potential setback following announcements in the United States that it will consider offering potential booster shots of vaccines in order to increase their effectiveness. Boosters are an extra dose of a vaccine given at a predetermined time after the initial injections to raise or maintain immunity against the targeted virus. The issue was recently brought up by U.S. vaccine policy chief Anthony Fauci and the CEOs of Pfizer and Modena. The coronavirus vaccines from the two pharmaceutical giants are administered in two injections, but the U.S. government has decided to look at giving third shots for both, according to White House officials last week.If the U.S. confirms the third round of vaccinations, it will increase demand there for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines and the supply schedule
