Facebook has released an app that allows users to privately share photos of themselves using facial-recognition technology.

"It's hard to get the photos your friends have taken of you, and everyone always insists on taking that same group shot with multiple phones to ensure they get a copy," said product manager Wil Ruben.

“Moments,” the new standalone app, gives users a quick way to sync photos to friends who are in the same photo, and get more photos if the user's face is synched to the picture.

"You all want a quick way to share your photos with the friends who are in them, and get photos that you're in back," Ruben said.

Since the user's face is embedded into the app, you can privately view photos that may have gone unnoticed and choose to share them with certain people.

"Synching photos with the Moments app is a private way to give photos to friends and get the photos you didn't take," Ruben said.

The app was launched Monday for Apple and Android users in the United States, and will be released to other countries soon.
