Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited a memorial altar to pay tribute to victims of the Sewol ferry tragedy, according to JoongAng Ilbo Tuesday.

Abe sought the altar set up at the Korean Embassy in Japan in Tokyo on Monday around 5:40 p.m. He offered flowers, a silent prayer, and lit incense. He is the first leader of global nations to pay tribute to memorial altars set up overseas.

After his visit, Abe expressed personal condolence for those victimized by the tragedy and their families.

Prior to Abe, the nation’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Fumio Kishida also visited the altar, followed by the Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Saga and the Vice Foreign Minister Akitaka Saiki.

The report cited a correspondent from Japan as saying the visits by major political figures of Japan signify that the nation wasn’t shy of displaying a form of friendship with intention to help its geographically closest ally.
