Rescuing Robot BEAR

A robot able to handle multiple tasks is the center of attention among the netizens worldwide.

It was first introduced though BBC internet edition. The name of the robot is “BEAR”, which was inspired by the robot’s face similar to a real bear’s, and it stands for Battlefield Extraction-Assist Robot. BEAR’s strength is its ability to pass obstacles such as stairs easily using Caterpillar, lift up heavy objects, and carry a wounded soldier by using its manipulators.

Made by Vecna Robotics, expert robot manufacturer in the U.S., BEAR, is originally designed to rescue injured soldiers. However, besides rescuing, Bear can take care of other various tasks including searching and reconnoitering.

The biggest charm of the robot is it can rescue people from sites considered dangerous such as contaminated zone and earthquake mess. “We needed a robot that can go anywhere people go,” said president of Vecna Robotics, Daniel A. Theobald. “BEAR will be widely used to save lives, carry people and heavy objects, and so on.”

미국의 로봇 제작 전문 업체인 베크나 로보틱스사가 만든 이 로봇의 이름은 '베어(BEAR)로, 원래는 부상을 입은 군인을 구조하는 용도로 개발되었다. 인명 구조는 물론 수색 및 정찰 등의 다양한 임무를 수행할 수 있다는 것이 개발사 측의 설명이다. 또 각종 유독 물질로 오염된 위험 지역, 지진 붕괴 현장 등에서도 구조 활동을 할 수 있다고.

무거운 철제 사다리, 역기 등의 물건을 집게 팔로 번쩍 들고, 날렵한 움직임으로 사람을 구하는 로봇 '베어'의 모습은 최근 해외 인터넷 사이트를 통해 소개되면서 큰 화제를 낳고 있는 중이다.
