The Korea Football Association (KFA) announced Tuesday its Vice President Choi Young-il will serve as new head of a committee in charge of hiring coaches for national teams.

The KFA said Choi will lead the National Teams Committee, filling the vacancy left by the departure of his predecessor, Chung Hae-sung, in June.

Chung abruptly resigned in late June while the KFA was looking to hire the new head coach for the senior men's national team. Instead of naming Chung's replacement, technical director Lee Lim-saeng assumed Chung's responsibilities, as the KFA settled on Hong Myung-bo as the new men's boss in early July.

Choi and the new-look National Teams Committee will now look to fill the coaching void for the senior women's national team and the men's under-23 national team.

The KFA named six new members to the committee, including Hwang In-sun, former head coach of the women's U-20 national team, and Jung Jae-kwon, head coach of the men's team at Hanyang University.

The women's national team has been without a head coach since the KFA terminated its deal with Colin Bell by mutual consent in June. The Taegeuk Ladies are scheduled to play friendly matches in October.

The men's U-23 squad will soon begin preparations for the Asian Football Confederation U-23 Asian Cup and the Asian Games, both in 2026. Their last head coach, Hwang Sun-hong, had an unceremonious end to his tenure in April this year, as Korea were knocked out early in the Olympic qualifying tournament following a loss to underdogs Indonesia.

The KFA said the new committee's first meeting will be Thursday. Choi's term will end in January 2025, coinciding with the end of the term for the current leadership group. (Yonhap)
